ANATOMY OF A SCHOOL foreword This was a year of progress unprecedented in the history of HHS. lt was the year of the Big Move into the three- million dollar campus-style high school. With the transition from the old to the.new, the students were slapped in the face with a completely different type of school life. They found the change a bit frightening at first, but then, with the natural fortitude and eagerness of youth, accepted the new ways and became the driving force and pioneers of the new Hutchinson high school. ln retrospect, the problems seemed overwhelming, especially those first few weeks without clocks, locked lockers, a public address system, and cafeteria services. Who could forget the first closed noon hour, the sack lunches, or the first plate lunch special, greasy meatloaf topped with greasy gravy. Remember the pep rallies in the quadrangle with the cheerleaders being assisted in their efforts by the illustrious Goon Squad who made famous the Cry of the Goons- Are we gonna beat. . .? How bad?. . The double assemblies were a new thing to students conditioned to the vastness of Richardson Auditorium, but despite this, the pep assemblies were iust as peppy. And don't forget the covered walks, so pleasant in the spring and early fall, so frigid in the winter. There were dances, too, the dance in the girls' gym with only a few couples attending and the dances in the cafeteria, the scene for the crowning of royalty. And there was that unforgettable week when school spirit rose from near non-existence to an all-time high. ARAB was the by-word and We've Been Workin' on the Railroadersn was the song, and the mighty Newton basketball team bowed to the fighting Salt Hawks. This year also brought the dreaded semester and final exams. The burning of midnight oil helped many, a few were not so fortunate. All these things are in the past now, but the memory of them lingers. lt was a year of firsts for the students, for they were the tradition-makers. They made the memories. They formed the anatomy of a school.
