The Hawks finished out the regular season with a 67-42 victory over the Vikings. The regional tournament at Great Bend started Mar. 2. The Garden City Buffaloes were completely buffaloed as all ten Hawks figured in the scoring in the 74-46 victory. Reserves played half of the game and iunior high-point man, Bill Darnell, scored 16 points although he was a non-starter. Liberal was next on the list. The Hawks defeated the Redskins 68-60, putting Hutch in the finals. Fred Littooy hit 18 points for his best scoring effort of the year. Stu Steele and Bill Darnell were close behind with 16 and 15 points respectively. The Cadets of St. Joseph's Military Academy from Hays put the Hawks down to stay. Trailing only one point at half time, the Hawks, in the second half, went scoreless while the Cadets bagged 12 quick points. The deficit was too much to overcome. Hutch lost 42-65. The Salt Hawks of '60-'61 had accomplished a desire of every team for 21 years before them, beating Newton twice and winning the Ark Valley.
