In 1910, while the first senior class entered the new building at Seventh and Walnut, the vi- brant figure zfjormer President Theodore Roosevelt dominated U. S. political circles. Meanwhile, abroad tensions raged in high gear. A powder keg constructed if strong sentiment among European countries waited quietbfjbr a stray spark. Across the Atlantic, pressure mounted toward the United States. The volcano erupted when Americans scanned headlines fy' the day- Lusitania Sunk- Americans Aboardfn In 1917 the U. S. declared war on Germany and throngs Q' Americans ld homes, jim- ilies, and jobs, and went to war with the cgi, Make the world sajefnr democragtf' November 11, 1918, world powers agreed to peace. Afferjbur long years gf war, the world prodded itsebf back to that jorgotten word- normaligr. Oldsters shook their heads at zany antics of students who were destined to shimmy to the uptempo rhythms Q' the Roaring Twentiesf' I-Qfsterical phrases, the Bee's Knees and '93-Skidoo, echoed fam crowded speak-easiesf' then wilted under the blanket of Depression. Black Friday, October, 1929, shrouded carwee lm? across the nation. December 7, 1941, japan bombed Pearl Harbor, and World War II sent the county into mass diwnsive production. The next morning HHS students jrrgot petty trjles and turned to the White House as President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on japan. August 5, 1945, the Atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and World War II came to an end September 1. Americans peered apprehensiveb into the future. Pages ofhistopr skip a decade and unfold upon the j9antic race far space supremagr. While the U. S. battled the relentless Asian flu, Russia launched Sputnik L October, 1957. It was months later bdzre the United States regained its lost prestige. Hutchinson students listened intentbf as news machines flashed the accomplishments if Explorer L During the Fabulous FQ7ies, the halls cy' HHS grew dim with age, but its antiquated cavernsjziled to dampen Salt Hawk spirit. In their spare time spirited Hawken rocked Jn rolled to the strumming if the twangy guitar fy' Elvis Presley, wailing saxophones, and the Kingston Trio. Teenagers abandoned bigfcles and crowded into automobiles, fzrezgn bugs, and hot rods. Students whose ulterior goal appeared to be dragging Nlain, or 'playing it cool, U took a last look at high school days, then strode conjidentbf into the Soaring Sixties.
