Two in Davis Foundation Awards Don Worster A Davis Award of 35500 for four years was also won by Sandra Gustafson. Sandra has been active in clubs and in music during her three years in high school. A top student, she was a finalist in the Eliza- beth M. Watkins scholarship contest at the University of Kansas. She was local president and state vice-pres- ident of the Future Teachers of America. Sandra has played in both the concert band and the orchestra, and attended District Music Festival two years. During her senior year she was a member of Valence Club, Briny Birds, Kayettes, GAA, Co-ed Counselors, and FTA. The Davis Foundation awards, begun three years ago, are given to a graduating senior boy and girl. The 13500 per year scholarships may be used at any college in Kansas or Mis- souri. Don NVorster, one of the 1959 winners, has been extremely active in speech and debate activities. He has attended the District Speech Festival, the AVI. Speech Festival, and the State Speech Festival in each of his three years in high school. Don is a member of Hi-Y, Perrill Club, and the National Forensic League. He is serving his second year as president of the Chess Club. Don was a finalist in Summerfield Scholar- ship competition at the University of Kansas. Sandra Gustafson

Vote Alan Sorem Young American Alan Sorem, chosen 31st Young American, received the traditional silver loving cup and 3100 cash award in the annual awards assem- bly. The Young American award is presented by A. Lewis Oswald, class of 1917, and Wil- liam L. Mitchell, class of 1942. The recipient of the award, which has been presented since 1929, is selected by a representative group of faculty, students, and alumni. This honor represents a culmination of many honors for Alan. He has won a Na- tional Presbyterian Scholarship and was a finalist in both the National Merit Scholar- ship Contest and Summerfield Scholarship competition. As befits a young Americanf Alan has been in many high school activities. He was president of the junior class, has served two years as Hi-Y treasurer, and was president of the Spanish National Honor Society his senior year. Alan was elected Junior Rotarian and was a Boys State dele- gate. Two major fields of interest for Alan were music and dramatics. He sang with the Chorale for three years and appeared in numerous musical and dramatic productions, including the senior play. Alan Sorem
