YES, 'TWAS GREAT IN '58! This year was our year. Sometimes the going was rough but some- thing we'll remember because they were a part of us. ln the fall the spotlight swung to Little Rock and became stationary while the battle of racial discrim- ination raged . . . and Althea Gibson, a Negro woman, won the world's womens' tennis match. Everyone worried about Asian flu while Mr. J. Q. Public scanned the newspapers for reports on the President's illness. New York's loss was California's gain when two major league baseball teams went west. The Yankees lost the World Series and Oklahoma Uni- versity's football team suffered defeat by the Fighting lrishmen. YES, 'TWAS GREAT IN '58! Peyton Place became a best seller at the news- stands and theatres while everyone was talking about Cinerama and Michael Todd's Around the World in Eighty Days. Teenagers enjoyed Jack Parr and the Westerns on TV. The state political scene was one of confusion with the first democratic governor in twenty years. Hutchinson no longer saw foreign license plates when the Navy Air Station closed. The Kansas tags were Salt Hawk colors, navy blue and gold . . . But we just went to school . . . and lost books, didn't lock our- lockers, crammed for exams. The girls thought the new chemise dresses horrible and the boys adopted cardigans, and crew-neck sweaters. Sputnik became a new word in the dictionary and was circling the world in much less than eighty days The United States launch ed its first satellite, FIopnik, but soon afterward sent Explorer into the outer atmosphere. Educators started a campaign for more science and mathematics in high school . . . And a trip to the moon was not so far-fetched . . . This Year was really great, wasn't it?

Mrs. Aylene Keown Advisor Is Surprise Declicotee Joining the Hutchinson High School fac- ulty in l954, Mrs. Aylene Keown quickly be- came a hard worker in the school. Mrs. Keown, who teaches journalism and sophomore English, has her master of arts degree with a major in journalism from Mis- souri University in Columbia, Missouri. The students of HHS feel that she is one of them and yet there is the line of respect between instructor and student. Because of her sponsorship of the Buzz and Allagaroo students, she has become a kind of second mother to each of them, Besides her school family, Mrs. Keown has a family of her own: her husband Stuart and son Stu. She has a fondness for music, clothes, coffee, steaks, books, her red convertible, and, with her hus- band, is often seen sponsoring school dances. To this teacher who has the admiration and respect of the students and faculty of Hutchinson High School, we, the Allagaroo staff, dedicate the l958 Allagaroo.
