Sometimes the going was rough but some- thing we'll remember because they were a part of us. ln the fall the spotlight swung to Little Rock and became stationary while the battle of racial discrim- ination raged . . . and Althea Gibson, a Negro woman, won the world's womens' tennis match. Everyone worried about Asian flu while Mr. J. Q. Public scanned the newspapers for reports on the President's illness. New York's loss was California's gain when two major league baseball teams went west. The Yankees lost the World Series and Oklahoma Uni- versity's football team suffered defeat by the Fighting lrishmen. YES, 'TWAS GREAT IN '58! Peyton Place became a best seller at the news- stands and theatres while everyone was talking about Cinerama and Michael Todd's Around the World in Eighty Days. Teenagers enjoyed Jack Parr and the Westerns on TV. The state political scene was one of confusion with the first democratic governor in twenty years. Hutchinson no longer saw foreign license plates when the Navy Air Station closed. The Kansas tags were Salt Hawk colors, navy blue and gold . . . But we just went to school . . . and lost books, didn't lock our- lockers, crammed for exams. The girls thought the new chemise dresses horrible and the boys adopted cardigans, and crew-neck sweaters. Sputnik became a new word in the dictionary and was circling the world in much less than eighty days The United States launch ed its first satellite, FIopnik, but soon afterward sent Explorer into the outer atmosphere. Educators started a campaign for more science and mathematics in high school . . . And a trip to the moon was not so far-fetched . . . This Year was really great, wasn't it? Mrs. Aylene Keown Advisor Is Surprise Declicotee Joining the Hutchinson High School fac- ulty in l954, Mrs. Aylene Keown quickly be- came a hard worker in the school. Mrs. Keown, who teaches journalism and sophomore English, has her master of arts degree with a major in journalism from Mis- souri University in Columbia, Missouri. The students of HHS feel that she is one of them and yet there is the line of respect between instructor and student. Because of her sponsorship of the Buzz and Allagaroo students, she has become a kind of second mother to each of them, Besides her school family, Mrs. Keown has a family of her own: her husband Stuart and son Stu. She has a fondness for music, clothes, coffee, steaks, books, her red convertible, and, with her hus- band, is often seen sponsoring school dances. To this teacher who has the admiration and respect of the students and faculty of Hutchinson High School, we, the Allagaroo staff, dedicate the l958 Allagaroo. Supt. I Guide Progressive School System To the school board is delegated the never-ending task of formulating the policies and guiding the progress of the Hutchinson school system. The important six of the school board are: Mrs. J. Richards Hunter, Harry Faris, Charles Colladay, W. W. Ferguson, Harry Coberly, and James Rexroad. After the passage of the three-mil- lion-dollar school bond in l957, the board spent hours planning the new senior high school. The building program was only sec- ondary to keeping the schools on a high standard. Securing the best qual- ified teachers and making the school system one to attract and keep capable teachers was foremost in the thoughts of these six representative citizens of the community's taxpayers. READY TO GO TO WORK is the Hutchinson school board: Mr. W. W. Ferg- uson, Mr. James H. Rex- road, Mr. Harry Coberly, Mr. Charles Colladay, president, Mrs. J. Rich- ards Hunter, vice-presi- dentg and Mr. Harry Faris, MR. EARL PEARCE, clerk of the school board, keeps records of the board's activities and meetings. 9 SENIORS if .0 Jimmy Duck Young AmerIccIn Is Jlmmy DIck The thIrtIeth Young AmerIcan named by a representatnve group of faculty students school board and alumnI was JImmy Dlck The tradItIonal sIlver Iovmg cup and S100 was presented ID the annual Awards Assem bly The award was based on leadershIp cIt IzenshIp and dependabIlIty Donors of the honor were A Lewls Oswald Class of l9l7 and WIllIam L Mltchell Class of l942 ServIng as student body presIdent and pre Sldlng at the assemblIes has been one of the many jobs JImmy held thIs year He estab lIshed the reputatIon of beIng the person to 'I2 ask If one wanted somethung done correctly promptly and courteously Outstandung among Jlmmy s achIevements was wInnIng the Naftzger Young A rt I st Award held at WIchIta In February EnterIng n pIano hIs competItIon Included college SENIOFS When JImmy was congratulated on hIs success In hus humble manner he replIed I am certaInly grateful whuch IS typIcal of a young AmerIcan Followlng graduatIon and a leIsurely sum mer Jummy plans to attend Texas UnIversIty where he wIll major In pIano n 0 I O O I I ' l I 1 ' . . . , . Q The Hutchinson High School dramatic club, Perrill club, presented the 3-act play, Magnifi- cent Obsession, on Thursday, February 20, at 8 o'clock in Richardson Auditorium. The story told of a noted brain surgeon who was devoted to humanity because of a unique vitalizing principle. Early in the play he was drowned when he might have been saved by a means that was used instead to save a wealthy playboy. The playboy, regenerated, sought to take the surgeon's place. He proved the extra- ordinary principle was a true way of life and over- came the hostility of the surgeon's lovely widow.
