Guy first came to Hutchinson from Carden City and started his new job as the high school principal. It wasn't long after he stepped in that a host of students, teachers, and towns- people found in him a trustworthy friend. Besides his B.S. and MS. degrees from Kansas State Teachers College at Pittsburg, Mr. Guy brought with him a sense of humor and an understanding of those funny people, teenagers. He has been an outstanding leader and a great believer in youth. To this assuring American, who has done so much for his school and community, we dedicate this hook, the 1957 Allagaroo. Jerry Brown Nov. 12-16 Honorable Mention End Quarterback Center Guard Fullback gi - . l if This year was predicted to be the rebound year for the Salt Hawks. They had won more than their sharc the season before, and were heavily hit by grad- uation. Only a few players with much game exper- ience were left, and they were lightweight. The line was the smallest in the Ark Valley, .and the backs, although fast and deceptive, were also small. Many pre-season experts were skeptical, and many were fooled. The Hawks replaced pounds and inches with fight and determination. ln the first game with the Wiilheld Vikings much of the skepticism was erased with a 31-0 Hawk vic- tory. Wichita West fell next. After trailing at the half, the fighting Blue and Cold out-passed the Pioneers to win l9-13. Returning home, the Hawks were again vic- torious. winning from Welliiigton l9-13. A week later they scored a l6-0 win over E1 Dorado. The first loss came by the ill-blowing East winds. Homecoming matched the Hawks against Wichita East in the Ark Valley Came-of-the-Week. East won MIGHTY M0 RIDES AGAIN!-Track sprinter Maurice King speeds past Winfield's last safely man in the Hawks' debut win. by the slight margin of 14-13. The fight and determination Coach 'ilrishn lre- land had built was not extinguished. The following week Hutchinson rebounded with a 33-0 win over rival Newton. One of the biggest Hawk tests came in the non- league Great Bend contest. Underdog Hutch surprised many by sending the Panthers home carrying a 13-14 defeat. Then Hutch thoroughly established itself as one of the state's best by knocking off previously unde- feated Arkansas City, 26-lll-, in the last home game. The final game with North was important. Hutchinson needed only to win- and Wichita East to lose to W'est, and the first championship in over a decade would return to the Salt Citians. Bitter cold weather, failure to get rolling, and a fine Wichita North team stopped Hutchinson. The game was lost, 7-0. The championship was lost, but the city of Hutchinson will seldom see again a team of such strong individual talent molded into a common team who captured the pride of all they represented. The Blue and Cold finished in fifth place in the Ark Valley League and third in the state regionals. The boys got off to a slow start with a first game loss to the E1 Dorado Wildcats, Dec. 7, by a 39-35 score. They then fell to a sharp-shooting Wichita West team, 55-43. Victory was at last tasted when the Wellington Crusaders were defeated in the Arena, 49-41. The Salters split the next two games by winning from Winfield, 42-35, but ran into a 49-65 defeat dealt by Wichita North. .Win Sixth in Dodge Tourney ln Dodge Cityis Tournament of Champions, the Hawks drew Shawnee-Mission as their foe, Jan. 17. The lndians took a 53-49 decision over the smaller Hawks. In the first consolation game, the Eagles from Kingman were the victims. The conquest was by a small margin, 51-46. The Coffeyville Golden Tornadoes were victorious over Hutchinson in the next game, 46-43, and Hutch finished sixth, in the tourney. Return to League Play The team returned to League play Jan. 22, only to lose to the powerful Newton Railroaders by a score of 52-39. Then, back home in the Arena, the Hawks pulled one of the major upsets of the year when they edged out a hard fought victory with the Blue Aces from Wichita East, 47-44. Crucial free throws told the story in the next two games and helped the local lads beat Ark City, 44-41. But, El Dorado broke its seven-game losing streak when they squeaked past the Salt Hawks in a 42-40 thriller. Following a 53-49 loss to the Wichita West Pio- neers Feb. 5 in the Sports Arena, Coach Krafels and his charges began to show offensive power. Using a fast break, they trounced Wellington, in Wellingtoifs Municipal Auditorium, by racking up an 80-61 score. Bevenging an earlier loss to Wichita North, the Hawks took to the hardwoods and won, 47-40. The Redskins' basketball jinx against Hutch which dated back to 1951, was broken. Hawks De-Rail Newton The next victory was a 43-33 win over Winfield. Returning home, Feb. 22, the Hawks tangled with heavily favored Newton. This time the Bailroaders were de-railed in the Arena in a 47-45 thriller. After battling the Wichita East Blue Aces for three quarters, the Blue and Cold players lost their last out-of-town game, Feb. 26, by a score of 70-56. The Salt Hawks ended Ark Valley League play for the season by posting a 54-46 win over Ark City. -W Y V tl F 133 tr 7 9 - RQ J I YN X wc? fl -Silva'-ix? Finally, the time arrived for the announcement. Flossie Lowenstein was all smiles when she realized that it was her name ringing out over the loud- speaker. Wayne Buskirk, Stuco president, placed a crown of roses on her head and gave her the tra- ditional kiss. Flossie was re-crowned by Jerry llrown at the dance after the Hutchinson-Newton game. He pre- sented her a gold hasketlmall charm, on behalf of the team, and a bouquet of red roses. Her attend- ants were given silver basketball charms.
