seniors win scholarships Patricia Carter Larry Jones Winner of the Central State Bank S100 award was Larry Jones. Selected on the basis of scholarship, leadership and athletic ability, Jones lettered in football three years, was president of his sophomore, iunior and senior classes a , nd was an honor roll stu- dent. The Rotary scholarship to Hutchinson Junior College was awarded to Patricia Car- ter. The SIOO award was given to Patricia because of her literary and scholastic ability and her interest in her fellow students. She was active in music work and w as a mem- ber of the Perrill Club and Kayettes. Bausch and Lomb winner, Wesley Henry, received his award for outstanding work in science. Proof of his well-rounded person- ality was his participation in music for three years, track, two years, Junior Red Cross and Student Council. Two new scholarships were offered this year. The S100 Delta Delta Delta sorority award was given to Janice Withington. Jan- ice was active ' b in and and club work. She participated in FHA Perrill Cl , ub and Kay- ettes. li for outstanding influence The personal outlook of the 1955 Allagaroo dedicatee, Mrs. Ariel Perrill, is such that it has become a definite influence both in and out of the classroom. Since she began teaching at H H S in 1945, her zest for life, her natural tendency to make everything fun and her sincere interest and belief in teenagers has endeared students to her. Sponsor of Perrill club, Mrs. Perrill has taken a leading role in the development of the H H S drama depart- ment and from 1948 until this year has directed the senior play. She is chairman of the radio committee of the Hutchinson public schools, representative to local and state delegates' associations and has served as president of the Hutchinson Teachers Association. As a teacher, she takes an individual interest in every pupil and an attitude of enthusiasm toward student functions and projects. Because of her outstanding influence and contributions, the 1955 Allagaroo staff dedicates this book with admiration and respect to Mrs. Ariel Perrill.-

The award, based on leadership, citizenship and dependability consists of a loving cup and a cash scholarship. The top senior class nominees selected by the committee were: Mary Lou Briscoe, John Calvin, Gretchen Engler, Helen English, Beverly Gibbs, Nancy Holmes, Cynthia Hunter, Larry Jones, Ralph Nevius, and Susanne Wesley. The Young America award, sponsored by A. Lewis Oswald, class of '17, and William L. Mitchell, class of '42, was first presented in 1929. Gretchen was also chosen DAR Pilgrim. She was named by the faculty after she, Rose Jones, and Lilla King had been selected as nominees for the award by the girls of the senior class. She was introduced at a Daughters of the American Revolution meeting and later received a certificate and pin from the local chapter. Active in school work, Gretchen served as secretary of Kayettes, vice-president of Perrill club, was a member of the GAA board ' f th 1955 Alla aroo. and took an active part in forensics.
