FRED ADAMS Vsfzbii gl 4 , ,A Giving their services without compensation, the seven members of the Hutchinson Board of Education constitute an important planning group in this school fair. They co-operate with the superintendent of schools and the principals oi each building to promote better educational advantages for the youth of Hutchinson. With untiring zeal they strive to secure good instructors, to provide necessary equipment in the schools, and to make needed improvements in buildings and grounds. To them goes the credit this year for adding a new supervisor to oversee building improvements and needed re- pairs. By combining their efforts this group ot public-minded citizens comprising the Board of Education endeavors to make the community aware of its educational needs and eager for higher and better educational standards. New assistant principal, Roscoe Coyne, joined the administrative group second semester. Mr. Coyne's duties consist of assisting with clerical work, acting as adviser for assemblies, and meet- ing with Student Council. Every teacher acts as an adviser to his stu- dents: however Miss Esther Cope and Mr. W. T. Cole serve as special counselors, who may be con- sulted by students wishing help with their problems. For boys wishing to find in what field their talents lie, aptitude tests are offered by Mr. Cole. Investi- gating absences-whether there's a real reason or only an excuse--is another responsibility of the ad- visers. ' 23 ,fa-rx I .1 I I X 4 1 . By the time the student finishes high school he has conquered many gross errors in the use of the English language, for daily he has had opportunities to perfect his English-by reading the great classics ot literature, by drilling on grammar rules and by writing themes. It the student is interested, he may get further practice by taking joumalism, speech, debate, or dramatics. Spelling, too, has come in for its share of cor- rection this year with a new remedial course added to aid those students who have always found spell- ing their worst bugbear. Courses in algebra, plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry are offered in the mathematics department: biology, chem-istry, and physics in the science department. Recently, greater emphasis has been placed on these sub'ects as the J need for them was so forcibly shown during the war. To help a student discover in which field his abilities lie, a guidance program is being developed in the schools. It will offer aptitude tests to show students in what field their abilities lie. Beulah, one of the less glamorous members of the science classes receives the undivided attention of Iohn Stansel and Pearl Redgate. If your answer to these questions is affirmative, you will find opportunities to study art, music, or languages. In art, work in design, drawing, painting, and crafts is included. The music department carries on a busy program with the band and orchestra giving annual concerts and the vocal department present- ing The Holy City and the Salt Hawk Revue. The Spanish classes train us to be better neighbors with the countries of the other Americas by teach- ing their language and customs. The shops are equipped with modern machinery such as the linotype, cylinder press, power lathes. airplane demonstration engines, jointers and power saws. Working with the English department, the school's library carries on a busy schedule helping students. The library keeps excellent files on cur- rent and past news, authors, and statistics. Training future librarians is another of its activities. The physical education courses have the re- sponsibility of keeping students physically fit. The health rules learned will also be helpful in later life. The gym classes form the nucleus of the intramural sports by organizing teams which afford fun along with healthful practices. MR. Poor Vanilla-she certainly had her troubles. As if working for the Diggs family and having a rich college girl for a week-end guest weren't enough, Aunt Laura would come for a surprise visit! Little brother fell for the glamorous co-ed leaving his girl high and dry. Sister's boy friend took one look at Miss Glamor and was a goner. That is how the jitterbugging, topsy- turvy week-end started, and it looked as if it would end that way. -But that was reckoning without Aunt Laura, a tight and penny-pinch- ing old girl with a heart of gold. When she sent a telegram to Miss G's boy friend to join the happy group, the week-end really got started. Yas, Sir, dis house is just full of da crazy doin's of dem children, sighed Vanilla. G5 ' date With a total of 113 wins out of 178 debates, the Hutchinson high senior and junior debate squads finished another eventful season. Qualifying for semi-finals in four of the five invitational tournaments entered, the senior squad members finished the season winning 83 of their 109 debates. The tournaments entered were Newton, Topeka, Eldorado, Wyandotte. and Wichita East. At Newton and Eldorado Hutchinson qualified two teams for semi-finals, both teams in each case being undefeated in the preliminary rounds. Only Russell was to duplicate this feat during the invita- tional season. It was necessary to eliminate one team each time on speaker ratings, as a school places but 'one team in semi-finals. One four-speaker team advanced to the semi-finals at Wyandotte. No semi-finals were held at East, but one four- speaker team finished in a third place tie, ranking them again in the top four. ' The teams lost to Russell in the finals at New- ton, to Wyandotte in the semi-finals at Eldorado, and to Newton on a split decision in the semi-finals at Wyandotte, the affirmative losing, and the neg- ative winning. The junior squad closed its season at a begin- ners' no-decision tournament at East, in which the teams rated their opposition. They finished in a second place tie with Eldorado. Remember the Hutch-East game last fall, and the Coronation of football queen two weeks later? Wasn't Green Light a thriller, along with the other three plays? And who could forget the dances after the basketball games? Memories such as these are fresh in every Salt Hawk's mind now, but will they be ten years from now? It is the job of the yearbook staff to preserve these memorable events in the production of the high school annual, the Allagaroo. Along with the staif's other duties, it sponsors the election of Allagaroo king. Headed by an editor-in-chief and a busi- ness manager elected by the class to keep the ball rolling, the remaining staff members are assigned sections in the book. From then on. it is entirely each student's responsibility to plan the material for his section. In addition to drawing layouts, writing copy, and scheduling pictures, the staff makes its own decisions concerning such matters as choosing the cover and theme, and selection of type faces. When at last the material is completed and sent to the printer for the final touches, ten aged people give out with a sigh of relief, only to glow upon their finished masterpiece. The gridsters amassed 218 points to their opponents' 27, losing only to the un- defeated Wichita East Blue Aces. The Aces took Ark Valley championship leaving the runner-up position to the Hawks. In the opening game the Nevemen defeated the Sapulpa, Oklahoma, Chieftains, 7-0, in a' non-Valley game. The game was played in midfield with both teams showing great defensive strength. Late in the game Bill Wall, fleet Hutch scatback, dashed around end for the game's only touchdown. Wall also kicked the extra point. Eldorado had its Wildcats tamed, 34-O, in the Hawks' first league game. Captain Gene Ackerman, Bill Wall, and Ted Maupin followed the old faithful line to score touchdown after touchdown. Wall kicked the conversions. The Hawks next met the Winfield Vikings and got off to a lightning start when Byron Batthauer took the opening kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown. The Nevemen continued to score at will with the second and third teams boosting the tally to a Sl-O win. Iourneying to Wichita for a pow wow with the North Redskins, the gridmen got off to a rough start when North recovered a punt and scored. However, the Hutch- men quickly launched an attack which settled the score in their favor, 20-7. Traveling to Kansas City, the Hawks broke up the Ward Cyclones, 20-0. Hutch was stopped cold at' first but in the second half opened up an aerial attack to win. Hutchinson's 19-game winning streak was broken by East, l3-6. In the first quarter the Hawks raced down the field only to be stopped on the Aces' two-inch line. A score by East was matched with a touchdown by Bill Wall. Wichita made its winning touchdown the last half. The gridsters scored a complete comeback by rout- ing the Newton Railroaders, 41-7, and the Wellington Crusaders, 12-0, as the Hawk line played its best de- fensive game of the year. Winding up a successful season, Neve's boys de- feated the Ark City Bulldogs, 27-0. From the time that Batthauer got away for a long run to set up a touchdown play it was the Hawks' game. The basketeers opened their season with a 30-25 win over Topeka and 29-22 league victory over Wich- ita North. Picking up momentum-, the Hutch thinclads swept over the Win- field Vikings, 34-26, but were knock- ed from their perch when Ark City trounced them, 27-20. Recovering from defeat, the bas- keteers downed Wichita East, 28-24, in a thrilling game. However New- ton showed its basketball superiority over Hutchinson with a 30-24 win the following week. The Railers played cautious ball taking advantage of their height. In a quick comeback the Hawks trimmed Eldorado, 53-26, only to be mangled by Salina, the C. K. L. champs, 41-27. Another loss was to Wellington, 31-28, although the Hawks strove desperately to catch the Crusaders' lead. The home court looked reassur- ing to the Hutchinson team which found the basket with clocklike precision to beat Wichita North, 47-38. Placing third in a four-school invitational tournament, the hoop- sters were defeated by Emporia, 37- 36, but trampled Chanute, 47-25. Richard Mercer Hal Davis Bill Wall Returning to Valley play, the Salters lost to Winfield, 23-22. Play- ing to avenge a loss in the early season, the Hawks bumped off Ark City, 32-30, only to find themselves falling, 39-35, the next night when they met Wichita East. For the sec- ond time the Newton Railroaders completely outclassed the Cairns- men in a game that started out to be a thriller. The score was tied three-all in the first quarter, but the trainmen soon choo-chooed down the track leaving Hutch behind, 31-20. In an upset the cagers were downed by Eldorado, the celler champs, 53-42, only to recover and show Eastern Kansas the caliber oi Valley basketball when they down- ed a highly regarded Wyandotte team, 47-34. A thrill a minute greeted the spectators when the Hawks met Wellington in the last league game. Wellington, tied with Newton for first place, went down, 41-40. The boys were out to win for their re- tiring coach, E. A. Cairns. In the regional tournament against Wichita East, the Salters lost the game on the free throw line, 32-29. The sport's popularity with students was proved the first practice session when 75 reported. Of this number Mr. Cairns chose 20 of the more outstanding play- ers to comprise the squad.
