W' W Jw K' W-Vs ., . .lynn .W .l 4. emma ANAGING the business of Hutchinson High School is a job which Principal J. F. Gilliland carries out with the greatest efficiency. His twenty-two years as principal are a record of the diplomatic handling of the situations that have presented them- selves and the solving of the problems of individual students. This could not have been attained without his keen interest in all of the high school pupils and their achievements. Many graduates return to talk and visit with Principal Gilliland and thank him for his guidance and help in preparing them for the world of business. Although he likes to stick to the old traditions and customs of Hutchinson High School, Principal Gilliland is far- sighted enough to effect changes which make an up and coming school. His many years of experience show in his tactfulness in dealing with people and his competence in handling the affairs of Hutchinson-High School. Principal Gilliland received his A.B. and M.A. degrees at the University of Kansas and after holding the position of superintendent of schools in Viola, Kansas, spent fourteen years as principal in the Arkansas City High School before coming to Hutchinson. 11 I 1 1 I 1 1 4 1 4 1 I 3 . l 1 I i I x 4 1 N nhl

The students of the English classes are becoming acquainted with such rules of gram- mar and also the great classics of literature. This knowledge, taught by Miss Elma Hamill, Miss Kate Lewis, Miss Reba Anderson, and Mrs. Meryl Billingsley, not only will prove valuable in later life but may be put to Miss Bebo use now in the other courses of the English department. For example the sentence structure and punctuation rules aid in the creative writing which is required in Miss Jeanne Malcolm's journalism classes. First year journalism students put out the Buzz, the weekly high school paper, and second year journalists edit the Allagaroo, the high school yearbook. Speech and debate taught by Mr. Wodord Gardner are also courses where such accumulated knowledge may be called to the surface. An- other is dramatics, a half year subject taught by Miss Mayme King.
