FIPTEENTH WINNER of the coveted Young American award was genial Frank Putzke. The award, given each year by A. Lewis Oswald, is presented to the senior who has given outstanding service to the school during three years here and who most nearly typifies the ideal Young American. Putzke is a letterman in both football and wrestling where he has been outstanding for good sportsmanship. Whether on the bench or in the game, his enthusiasm and determination to see the team win never flagged. A consistent student, Putzke has made himself as well liked in the class- room as on the field of combat for his cooperative attitude and interest in anything which was for the school good. The award he has received entitles him to a loving cup and a cash award of S100 if he enrolls at Hutchinson Junior College, Kansas University, or Kansas State College next fall. The cash award will be S50 if he enrolls in college else- where. Members of the High Ten were Martin Colladay Eldon Bell Dick Woodall Allan Brandon Frank Putzke, Emma Lou Ridlen. Mary Ellen Anderson, Mary jane Thomas jo Anne McCrory and john Sutton.

PATRIOTISM in the schools was the unofficial theme of the Student Council for 1942-1943. The engineering of sev- eral large scrap drives started the activities, and increased bond and stamp sales for the whole year was a second of the Council's definite projects. A varsity dance to which admission was the purchase of a defense stamp proved to be one of the more popular activities they sponsored. Among regular activities sponsored and supervised by the Student Council are the Student Council president and football queen elections, all school parties, sponsor- ship of an assembly, assistance at awards assemblies, and plans for other assemblies. Nearly every organization is represented in the Coun- cil. Each class has two representatives, a boy and a girl, in addition to the class president. The Hi-Y and G. R. have two representatives, one chosen at the beginning of the year and the other at mid-term. Each serves a whole year. Richardson-McCarter, Peptomists, Pepettas, I-I-Club, Perrill Club, and G.A.A. each elect a represent- ative to serve one year. The purpose of the Student Council is, To foster closer relations between the students and school authori- ties, to foster sentiment for law and order, to conserve the traditions and ideals, and to promote the general welfare of our school. Mr. Robert Mitchner is the sponsor of the Student Council. 15
