Sutton has proved that he is worthy of his position of presi- dent by carrying out sincerely and honestly the business of the student body. Some of his many duties include presiding over Student Council meetings and over special assemblies and representing the school whenever he is called upon to do so. ln addition to his Student Council duties Sutton has found time to be on the Hi-Y cabinet, a member of Pcrrill Club, Peptomists, and H-Club. He also played on the football team his junior year but because of a broken ankle was forced to sit on the side lines most of the 1942 season. Student-Council officers are Paul Dillon, vice presidentg John Sutton. presidentg Don XVyman, secretary. .SW 5 Back row P Dillon B Foster O Butts R Mammel P Thiessen. Second row: D. Dillon, J. PATRIOTISM in the schools was the unofficial theme of the Student Council for 1942-1943. The engineering of sev- eral large scrap drives started the activities, and increased bond and stamp sales for the whole year was a second of the Council's definite projects. A varsity dance to which admission was the purchase of a defense stamp proved to be one of the more popular activities they sponsored. Among regular activities sponsored and supervised by the Student Council are the Student Council president and football queen elections, all school parties, sponsor- ship of an assembly, assistance at awards assemblies, and plans for other assemblies. Nearly every organization is represented in the Coun- cil. Each class has two representatives, a boy and a girl, in addition to the class president. The Hi-Y and G. R. have two representatives, one chosen at the beginning of the year and the other at mid-term. Each serves a whole year. Richardson-McCarter, Peptomists, Pepettas, I-I-Club, Perrill Club, and G.A.A. each elect a represent- ative to serve one year. The purpose of the Student Council is, To foster closer relations between the students and school authori- ties, to foster sentiment for law and order, to conserve the traditions and ideals, and to promote the general welfare of our school. Mr. Robert Mitchner is the sponsor of the Student Council. 15 FIPTEENTH WINNER of the coveted Young American award was genial Frank Putzke. The award, given each year by A. Lewis Oswald, is presented to the senior who has given outstanding service to the school during three years here and who most nearly typifies the ideal Young American. Putzke is a letterman in both football and wrestling where he has been outstanding for good sportsmanship. Whether on the bench or in the game, his enthusiasm and determination to see the team win never flagged. A consistent student, Putzke has made himself as well liked in the class- room as on the field of combat for his cooperative attitude and interest in anything which was for the school good. The award he has received entitles him to a loving cup and a cash award of S100 if he enrolls at Hutchinson Junior College, Kansas University, or Kansas State College next fall. The cash award will be S50 if he enrolls in college else- where. Members of the High Ten were Martin Colladay Eldon Bell Dick Woodall Allan Brandon Frank Putzke, Emma Lou Ridlen. Authorities claim that members of our armed forces, after an arduous day, find enjoy- ment in singing favorites learned in previous school days. Perhaps the Lily Pons or the Heifetz of tomor- row is training now in one of the various musical groups of the high school. Some of the groups in which musically inclined students may partici- pate are the glee clubs, mixed chorus, nonettes, madrigalians, boys quartet, melodiers, band, and orchestra. Each year in addition to its regular training program the music department presents two musical events. The first musical highlight of the year was the presentation of the oratorio, The Holy City, at Christmas tide. The second high- light ofthe year was the Salt Hawk Revue which this year stressed the good neighbor idea through the theme, United Xve Singf, All these music groups are expendable. They donate their services for assemblies or for seeing a contingent of soldiers off, for athletic events or for civic projects. Leaders of this army of musi- cians are Miss Mabelle Billings, Mr. Bernard Regier, and Mr. Alan Watrous. Back raw: C. Lewis, B. Jones, M. Colladay, H, Friesen, B. Hooper, S. Fanestil, B. Valence Club is the oldest high school club with the ex- ception of Richardson-McCarter. Valence Club meetings are held every second and fourth Tuesday of the month making interesting experiments and reports on the fields of science and chemistry. Talks in class are given on such subjects as Fires Started With XVater, Electronics, Present and Future, CarbonMonox- ide a War Gas, A Review of Chlorine, and Preparation and Properties of Lewisitef' From these reports and discus- sions the students gain a working knowledge of the scien- tific world of today and tomorrow. The members have made several trips to different indus- tries in their effort to see commercial applications of the theories studied. These trips are educational as well as inter- esting. Current questions become the subject of debates with members of the club forming opposing teams. Ofhcers elected this year were as follows: president, Forrest Lee Logang vice president, Bill Estesg secretary, Emma Lou Ridlenq treasurer, Elaine Wymang scouts, Jack Kendree and Richard Cooper. Kansas author. ln 1932 it joined with the Richardson Literary Society, organized and spon- sored by Mrs. Esther Richardson. The combined club was called the Richardson-McCarter Literary Society. This year Mrs. W'ill Billingsley has taken over the duties of sponsor performed for the past year by Miss Catherine W'renchey. The cabinet headed by June Meador as president was made up of Emma Lou Ridlen, vice presidentg Sue Ashby, secretaryg Elaine Wyman, treasurerg Pat Hamilton, Student Council representative. J!-Ulm Eiutxmo the H athletic award is the only require- ment to obtain membership in the H-Club. Although this may seem an easy task to some, Z1 full-fledged member will tell you differently. The most the out- sider ever sees is the player's performance on the field or court once a week or whenever the athletic event is held. But back of all this is daily practice. This daily practice lasts from one to three hours. Those who earn l-l's should indeed be proud of their extra achieve- ment. H-Club was organiied in 1927 by Ralph McCar- roll. Membership in the club entitles each member to the H-card which is a lifetime pass to all Hutchinson High School athletic events. The Club's activities were climaxed this year by the annual picnic. For the second successive year the H-Club's candi- date won the football queen's chair. Marcelle Easley was the queen for 1943. Maw faarfm By Barbara Brvlmz MORALE to high school teams is just as im- portant as morale to an army. This job of morale building in H.H.S. is the problem of the five loyal cheer leaders who encourage the pep section to yell and cheer. Under the guidance of this chosen quintet the gold and blue pep section could be heard at every field of combat in which the high school participated, their voices echoing through the air with a sound like a bomb that has just hit its mark. Cheer leaders were chosen at the first of this year by popular vote of the students. From about thirty students who tried out, Jack Kendree, Marcelle Easley, Barney johnson, Harriett Pegues, and Willie Rayl were chosen. A few days later the efferves- cent Rayl was chosen head cheer leader. Kendree and Johnson were the only two who were new to the Go Hutch Gov antics this year. , Hours of practice helped the cheer leaders to work together for effective presentation of the yells. The most original and striking innovation of the cheer leaders this year was the V formation used in leading the tradi- tional yell, Allagaroo . Perfectly synchro- nized, they presented an attractive picture in their white uniforms and gold emblems. l'IARRlliTT Piicuiis JACK Kl'.NDRlfli ' ' Q lull 3-5, .YV ..,.,.a . 14' '-4 A H.: M .1 i, ,. Mmm EMS SOME or THE FINEST coaching personalities in the Ark Valley are listed on the roster of Hutch- inson High School's coaches. Heading the Salt Hawk coaching staff is Edmund CChopj Cairns, athletic director. Cairns, who has been coaching basketball here since 1930, was elevated to thc position of athletic director four years ago. In his coaching career he has produced many a cham- pionship team for the Hawk Rooters. A new member of the coaching staff this year was Norvall Neve who came here from Welling- ton to assume the duties of head football coach. Neve's team took second place in the valley, the highest gridiron ranking since 1935. Neve also assumed the coaching duties of the single com- petitive sports, tennis and wrestling. Because of war conditions only intramural wrestling was held, while the tennis team was able to make traveling connections. Two state winning track teams have been pro- duced by the third Hawk mentor, W. E. QBil1J Upson. Upson has had the privilege of having some of the finest men in the state on the track team. Another honor bestowed upon Upson is to have had his 880-relay team of the last two years mentioned on the national track honor roll. Upson also coached the sophomore basketball team. Max Hamilton and Eugene Niewald are two more capable personalities who serve as assistants in football under Coach Neve. Hamilton also had charge of the seconds in football and the Hawk- lets in basketball. Cai Dxx LLL FLYNN EURTDN UNDER THE GUIDANCE of Head Football Coach Norvall Neve the Salt Hawks forged their way into second place, the highest posi- tion the Hawks had attained in the Ark Valley League since 193 S. With thirteen let- termen returning Coach Neve built a sur- prisingly new foundation for football in Hutchinson, with his T formation work- ing magnificently throughout the season. The Hawks were met with defeat only twice during the season, in a non-league fray with Great Bend and in a league game with the powerful league winners, Wichita East's Blue Aces. The kick-off of the season saw the Hawks meet the Stafford Trojans in a non-league game at Stafford. Under rain, sleet, and snow the Blue and Gold emerged victorious, 12-0. The following week the Hawks entertained the Emporia Spartans with a lopsided score of 20-6, with the Hawks holding the long end of the score again. October 9, the Hawks ofhcially opened their Ark Valley season at Wichita North upsetting the dope-bucket by scalping the Redskins, 27-14. 130-lb. Allan Brandon ac- counted for three touchdowns, an indication that size doesn't always count. Captain Har- old Nevius was also lugging the pigskin for gain after gain against the terrific line of North. Aided by the keen and smooth running of Nevius, the Hawks edged out the Welling- ton Crusaders, 14-0, the following week. Nevius carried the mail for two touchdowns, and Bill Careyls educated toe made the two conversions. The Nevemen traveled to meet the Great Bend Panthers only to lose the non-league game, 13-7, by under-estimating the Pan- thers' qualities. Brandon, Nevius, and Free- man were on the sidelines with sprained ankles. CARDW ELL HERRMAN C. A pass from Carey to Nevius brought the Hawks closest to their goal. W'ith Nevius running wild the following week the Hawks redeemed themselves by biting the Ark City Bulldogs, 47-13. Nevius accounted for four touchdowns and one extra point. Brandon, Parker, and Mercer accounted for the extra points. Repeating this win with a large score, the Hawks clawed the El Dorado Wildcats, 35-12, at Hutchinson before a crowd of 3,000. The expert blocking of Wick helped Brandon, Nevius and Mercer ring up four goals. Carey made the conversions. Marcelle Easley was crowned 1942-43 football queen. By derailing their old rivals, the Newton Railroaders, at Newton, 13-0, the following week the Blue and Gold kept tight hold of second place in the Valley when the season's final gun sounded. Out of thirty boys there are 12 lettermen returning to assist Coach Neve in his T formation for another Ark Valley race next year. In the All-Ark Valley and State selection made by coaches and game oflicials, Allan Brandon, left-halfback, Lloyd Freeman center, Ager Caldwell left end, and Harold Nevius, right-half, received Hrst place berths on the All-Ark Valley selection, Freeman, Caldwell, and Nevius received honorable mention on the All-State team. With dash men like Bill Shimel, Ray Tankersley, and Edison Garmon, and with relays and field events very promising, the Hawks had high hopes. Their first hope was torn away at the annual Sterling relays April 3, when the Hawks received third place with 372 points. The mighty Wichita East Blue Aces showed their strength by running away with the meet with 80 pointsg Wichita North was second with 49. The Hawks won only two first place honors-one in broad jump taken by Melvin Stevens, and one in discus by Bill Carey. April 10, saw the Hawks at the Anthony relays, and again their hopes were smashed by the strong Blue Aces who received 68LQ points. North held second place with 48 points, and the Hawks were next with 29 points. Not one first place was received this time. At the annual K. U. relays the next week the Hawks received fourth place in the meet with ISM points. The Hawks received first in the 440 with Tankcrsley beating out Nichols of Wichita North. The Hawks' first victory came at the Hutchinson in- vitational April 24. The Gold and Blue were victorious, scoring 55 points and placing in all events except two. Firsts were won by Shimel in the 100- and 220-yard dashes, the half mile relay team, Nevius in the low hurdles, and Stevens in broad jump. When this book went to press the following meets were to be held: the Ark Valley, the regional, and the state meet. Dillon passes the baton to Shimel in the medley. The program of the G.A.A. is divided into two parts, organized and unorganized sports, the former consisting of basketball, hiking, skating, bicy- cling, and hockey and the latter, horseback riding, skating, ping pong, tennis, hiking and bowling. Besides activities, girls may keep health charts. In addition to receiving points the G.A.A. teams are selected from the students participating in organ- ized activities for a six weeks period. Tourna- ments are held in hockey, basketball and ping pong. The G.A.A. awards consist of three em- blems based on a total of 600, 1,000, and 1,400 points. The first emblem is a blue and gold che- nille H, the second, a gold and brown K standing for Kansas and the emblem for the 1,400 award is a gold K pin. Among other activities sponsored by G.A.A. are play day, the G.A.A. roundup, picnics and tacky parties.
