Their greatest achievement was their patriotic gesture in selling defense bonds and stamps twice a week at a special booth. Under the leadership of Bill Mitchell, the Student Council sponsored dancing classes: took complete charge of Council president, football queen, and cheerleader elections: revised and distributed the Gold and Blue handbooksp assumed respon- sibility of the awards assembly: helped on other assemblies: and kept the trophy cases clean and sparkling. Student Council members with the advice of Mr. Burton Lyman sponsored a special train to Newton for the basketball game, engineered a highly successful tacky day, and sold pea- nuts at the football games. They also sent representatives to the five-state Student Council meeting at Wichita and to the state assembly at Emporia. The school parties with the entertaining floor shows were a complete success as were the newly inaugurated Varsities at Convention Hall. Since its organization sixteen years ago, the Student Coun- cil has had as its purpose To foster closer relations between the students and school authorities, to foster sentiment for law and order, to conserve the traditions and ideals of the school, and to promote the general welfare of the school. The Council meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month to transact business. The only social event is a hamburger breakfast in the spring. Fifteen

First and busiest man of affairs in the school this year was Bill Mitchell. Mitch was elected President of the Student Council by popular vote and as head of that organization attacked his duties with typical thoroughness. It takes quick thinking and master craftsmanship to fulfill that position adequately, and Bill certainly did it. Always ready for a laugh and a good time yet having his serious moments too, Bill, al- though popular with his fellow seniors, envied by fellow basketball players, and adored by many females, has remained modest and retir- ing. Perhaps the terms that best describe Mitch are conscientious and versatile. .S Jeddah of

Selection as the executive officer of one of the ten leading school organiza- tions demands outstanding leadership, character, and participation in all other activities. As young men and women these ten prexies combine the qualities of rational judgment, efficient manage- ment, and educated tactp and all three are necessary to be presiding officer of their respective groups. Inspiration was added to student cheering and pep by Bud Ennis and Marian Astle, presidents of the Pepto- mists and Pepettas. Designed to pre- sent a more serious note in education are the G.
