Original Oratory Ranking Changed An unfortunate reverberation from the Wooster tournament em phaslzes the necessity for coaches and contestants to guard very care fully against either wittlngly or unwittingly permitting printed ora tions editorials essays articles etcetera to influence the composi tion of Original Urations entered in the National Forensic League Tournament Our ruling is definite This contest shall comprise only orations actually written by the contestants delivering them The implication is clear if any quoted matter is used it should be set off by quotation marks to show that it is not original and quoted matter should be used very sparingly The rules definitely set the limit at 150 words Since the Wooster tournament it has been brought to liqht that the winner of second place in Qriginal Oratory had qleaned more than half of his material ad literam from an editorial The NFL cfficers feel that this student did this unwittingly in that he doubtless did not carefully enough read the instructions for this contest how ever since such a composition is disqualified from being an Qrigi nal Oration this contestant has been asked to return his second place avs ard No blame or condemnation is attached to the student whose care lessness caused this error But contestants should be more careful hereafter The Original Qratory contest IS intended to represent termg any phase of National Competition should be sure to read all instructions pertaining to that section before competing in the Na tional Tournaments How Lexington Honored National Orator When Howard Smathers of Lexington Ky vxon the contest in Oratorical Declamation last year the entire student body and facul ty of Henry Clay High School of 900 met him at the station The band and fifty cars decorated in the school colors formed a parade through the main street to the high school building with the band leading and the mayor and other city dignitaries following with Hovx ard Smathers and his coaches Miss Sarah Clarke and Mrs Nannette By ron Later he was presented with a watch purchased by the students The manaqer of tvxo local theaters scheduled Hovsard to give his wining oration for three successive nights and paid him S100 A member of the Board of Education presented him with a silver lovinq cup on graduation night Henry Clay High School several years ago won the national high school basketball championship and a somewhat similar celebration was given in honor of the basketball team I have always been ac customed to such celebrations on behalf of athletes states Supt Hill of Lexington and I must admit that I was agreeably surprised and particularly qratified at the splendid attitude of wanting to honor the winning of an oratorical contest Speech activity is coming into its rightful place when cities the size of Lexington will thus honor excellence in its pursuit in national com petition 7 .
