They are not easy to analyze, to one experienced in the art, but to the average high school student, it is with a feeling of awe that they are even talked about in an analytical way. But to any observer, and there are probably six hundred of these, the easiest thing to fllltt out about a teacher is his method of attack. There is Mr. O'Connell who greets us with Now, friendsf' There is Miss Parks, always right there to remind us of opening the windows and getting slips-youll al- most think study hall was an icy sidewalk-so many slips. Mr. Almquist daz- zles us with words that go over our heads and tlit around the room, bumping into each other. Every teacher has his or her private line of first day and every day specialties. Taken as a whole, they are a group of the most intellectual tof coursej, the most amazing, and the most changeable people, outside of and also closely connected with the student body. Looking closely at the faculty in their native haunts, those being where we sec them most, they are, has been said before, changeable. They have their jokes in the private office of Mr. Brooks. XYhy even their merry laughter often penetrates into the hall and across, yes, and beyond to the listening ears of young hopefuls. They are as gay as ever a bunch. of us, when they are at a party or o11e of the famous faculty picnics. Things occur at these happenings that bring to the usually care worn and worried face of Mr. lirooks, smiles that begin at his mouth, travel up to his eyes, and end in a big grin. They have looks-these teachers. They have one kind, a11 air of innocent questioning in their eyes. Again, when that has failed, there comes a look of troubled interest as to why we don't' know, and then ends in a look as if hope were lost-and-forever-gone. They reserve for Days of Torture, the Faculty Special. On these days they give out papers and write questions on the board, and the look in their eyes makes us wish-Oh! for just one more look into our text. But that look is mild, 'very mild. to the one that is rayed upon us at grade time. ' The only thing that the faculty has a certain shy attitude toward, is that of having their pictures taken. Not by fair means or foul could they be per- suaded to go down to Mr. NVade's studio. Look at the pictures! There they are as they were caught for once. together. XVe never have and never will think of sehool without teachers-they are just us, you and me grown up. Thej. re human. and they have spent four years pushing us on and up. ltet's play fair, and remember them as our real friends- the biggest word in our high school vocabulary. el'll'lS1922 VI'enJ fine f- CL Ai3i5FQ S3 f E'- Wm i I! Curriculum kieked off and '22 returned. Then began a series of smashing attacks led by Overall, Harmon, and Hastings. Near the middle of the first quarter, '22 went over for a counter. Play was more even until near the end of the period, when '22 scored a safety just as the whistle blew. Score: '22, 9, Curriculum 0. In the second quarter, '22 took the ball on Curriculuin's I8-week line and carried it over in a series of line bucks by Fontron, Smith and King. In this period, Geometry, the heavy Curriculum fullback, several times threatened to break thru but failed. '22 scored again near the end of the first half, and the whistle blew with the score 18-0 in favor of '22, In the third quarter Currieulum's heavy backs were charging the '22 line. XVork was beginning toweaken when Kid-Party was substituted. This so strengthened the team that they scored 9 points during this quarter. The work of lllhitc, Grovicr, and Crotts plainly featured. Score: '22, 27, Curriculum 0. '22 opened the last quarter with a whirlwind attack led by Knightly, Fant, and Mountain. In this period American History and Physics, two Curriculum players, offered such a spirited resistance that some of the '22 players were ex- hausted and left the game. Their measure was soon taken, however, and so perfect was the interference of Study and Mid-night Oil that they were power- less. H. S. XVAC have been engaged in a great four years' struggle. testing whether that class or any class so eoneeived and so dedi- cated can long endure. NVQ are publishing this annual to dedicate a portion of its pages to those who have so bravely Weathered the struggle. lt is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But in a larger sense we cannot hallow this book. The brave Seniors, struggling and sueeessful. have consecrated it tar above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note nor long remember this poor volume but it can little forget the worthy Seniors and what they did here. It is for you. Juniors. to dedicate your tiny volume, next year. to the worthy seniors and carry out their work so nobly started. It is rather for you to honor the Seniors, that from them. you take increased devotion to that eause for which they gave their last full measure ot devotiong that we highly resolve that these Seniors have not labored in vain. but that this sehool shall have a new birth of pep and that this high sehool of the Seniors, by the Seniors, and for the Seniors, shall not perish from this earth. NVith the aid of Saga, the goddess of history. she making just such an article. They began with beautiful, glossy, silky, green threads. These threads banded together called themselves Freshmen. The ones woven lengthwise called themselves Liberty, and those erosswise, Sherman. Some of the Shermanites, who were officers, made the design. Extra frills were furnished by happy gather- ings called Hparties. t Lina, after working nine months on this work of art, worked three months on plain material, whieh, contrasted with the nine months work made it show great results. At the end of three months. Saga informed Lina that they must begin an- other nine months task. The new square was called Iligh School. Saga col- lected suggestions from which Lina wove more lovely cloth. Three threads made themselves conspicuous at the place called elections. As they were so important they were given the names Keith Armstrong, Margaret Slavens and Charlotte Dana. The whole group of squares now called themselves Sophomores. As the weaving proceeded the threads grouped themselves into t'elubs,', but later joined together to form the principal design. a party. A second three months work began. Again the previous nine months' work loomed up as wonderful. History repeats itself and Saga again told Lina to begin her work on the third panel of the tapestry. The first netables who appeared among the threads were ltlmerson Carey, Jr., who acted as leader, Thelma Shuler, who as- sisted him, and Carl Bloom, who kept count of the various little cords. As this panel was probably the most important., one grand design had to be inserted. This was a gathering at which all the little threads invited their friends who were a trifle older. Lina thought the design so elaborate that she called it Junior-Senior Banquet. Her own little threads were the Juniors who also had a gathering for themselves only. The tapestry here showed brilliant colors which were unmistakeably symbols of pleasure. Only three more months will Lina have to work before she begins the last panel which will bring out even more glorious effects. XVhen the stitches of' graduation have been east off, llina will have a product of which Jupiter will justly be proud. So wonderful will the impression that it will leave be, that the Tapestry of Education and Sol should be and will be synonyms, as both pro- duee the very greatest of results, that of enlightening the world. -Edith Shedd. - HHS1922 lForty twoj Hforty-tlmrw,-j ALLAQAROO 111151922 - - ldSS F CD ni Ju year. next the space have all ait, oh Juniors--youyll but w ll, S S0 SIIIZI re i are sorry the pictu NVQ i 1 Ju.LAqARoo Cfhegduniorf-Senior Reception On April twenty-second last, there was held in the Chamber of Commerce Rooms the event' which is always looked forward to by every member of the Junior and Senior classes, the Junior-Senior reception. In the Kansas City game he received an injury that kept him from playing for the rest of the year. George graduates with the good old class of '22, He has Won three football letters. EMIQRSON CAREY, JR.4GUARD. June made his debut on Hutch- inson's gridiron last year. He can play any position, but fitted best at guard this year. There is no doubt but that he has inherited his brother Bill's kicking toe. June acted as cap- tain in the absence of George. RAIJI 'H CR AM M-TA CKLE. Gramm is one of the big men of the team. He made his best exhibition of football. at Salina, where he Was a great factor in throwing the enemy back, and making large holes for our backfield men. This is Crammls sec- ond year on the team. J OHN I'IANNA-FULLBACK. Jack is the beefiest man on the team. NVhen he carries the oval, a person has to think twice about which part of the human anatomy would be the best part to attack. He has a Way of lunging forward, when tackled, that always adds a yard or so to his gain. H H S 1922 LS1xty twojl lSixty-threej .ALLAGAROO v EDVV ARD OVERALL-END. It is just seeond nature for Ed to handle the oval in the inanncr that he does. HChuck', wo11 his first HHH this year, playing' in the baekfield. He is not a very heavy man but his ability to watch the field and get the man with the ball, coupled with his run- ning success made hiln a valuable man to the team. H'l'winkle is one of the best high school athletes in the state. He has a most peculiar way in which he eludes taeklers, and is never satisfied with gaining less than thirty yards. His first appearance this year was in the Marion game when he piloted the team like a veteran. His abilitv in passing was a great aid to the Gold and Blue. EARL Dlcos--CENTER. ' Following the accident to Captain Smith, the center position was open to Dicus. Earl can be congratulated on his steadiness and consistency of work: A center must be absolutely reliable in passing the ball and at the same time be a good defensive man. lllIL'l'ON ALLEN--MCKLE. This was HShook's second year with the H. H. S. team. At the start of the season he showed signs of hav- ing a powerful right toe, and Coach McCarroll took advantage of the fact and produced one of the best punters on any high school football team in the state. PAUL SHEL'roN-HALFBACK. Shelton, last ycar's track star, ap- peared in a football suit for the first time last fall. The seven people who gained the eoveted positions were: Olga Gottlieb, Evelyn Way, John XYray Young, John Knightly, Paul Murphy, Thur- man Zinn, and Austin l?a,eker. The first question over whieh these people puzzled their brains and ejac- ulated voeiferously was: 'tResolved, That further iimnigration of the yellow race to the United States should he prohihited.'l After many weeks of preparation the youthful dehaters niet the Wichita team. Through a misunderstanding Wichita kept her affirmative team at home. So when the H. ll. S. team arrived on the platform with shaky knees, and after unequaled inroads on XYolfls Cafeteria, they found that, their opponents thor- oughly agreed with them on the question. Consequently the dehate was post- poned until the following evening, when Wiehitals gullihility won the deeision at both cities. I Again on January 26, there was a dual dehate with Newton on the same question. The results were rather disastrous for the home teams lost. All the time the date for the Oklahoma Vity dehate, the hardest of the year, was drawing nearer. The question was: Resolved, That the principle of the open shop should reeeive the support ot' puhlie opiuionf' Hutehinson was to uphold the affirmative side with two dehaters. Olga Gottlieb and Thurman Zinn were ehosen to represent llutehinson after elimination eontests had heen held. After a period of intense preparation, the llutehinson dehaters met, the tkklalioma. City tieam. The logical reasoning and excellent delivery of the home team won the unanimous deeision of all the judges. So the dehating season of 15322 ended in a. grand and glorious vietory for ll. ll. S. John Knightly and Thurman Zinn were the only debaters lost, hy gradu- ation, so the outlook for a sueeessful season in 15123 is hright. - - l'l l'l S 1922 minety-twoJ I .ALLAQAROO John Kllightly, John NY1 z1y Young. At the beginning of the school term of '22, the musicians gathered in the assembly hall, that sanctuary of the blue-notes, and where many an aspiring prima-dona or musician has mounted one more rung on the ladder of fameg and a very uniform program was propounded. The fourth period of every Monday, XVednesday. and Friday was set aside as a regular practice hour and a great benefit has this definite rehearsal been. For when the orchestra score for Pocahontas arrived. much was accomplished during these hours. and many tvearying outside rehearsals were eliminated. Under the leadership of Mrs. Geo. F. Brooks the orchestra has reached unheped-for success. Miss Dow's Glee Clubs assembled early in the year and were given noon- hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays for rehearsals. It was the diligent practice at these periods that enabled her picked Girls' Glee Club to make such a fi11e show- ing at the Spring State Musical Contest held at Emporia. Also her work with the students in the music room, just west of the Assembly Hall, was shown by the exceptionally fine singing in the principal parts and choruses of t'I'oea- hontasfl XVe have also been greatly pleased with her diligent work with the High School Male Quartet whose cheery veices floated down from the music room regularly the first period every dayg and whose appearances in Assembly were always looked forward to. The funds from the musical programs have enabled the orchestra to pur- chase a fine bass viol. and in the music treasury there is a- sum gradually growing which will soon be used to buy a grand piano as a school memorial. and a fitting tribute to the work of the musicians among the alumni. In February the Glee Clubs appeared at the Chamber of Commerce, and soon after, the Orchestra. The latter has done its bit at Assembly programs, de- bates. and has worked up several selections for the May Fete. Its extra rehears- als on the score for Pocahontas helped to make it one of the best operettas ever staged here. and that in itself makes both the Glee Clubs and Orchestra feel amply repaid. There has been a fine attitude shown by the students this year towards music-a goal at which we have long been driving: namely, teamwork, that in- defineable something which is of inestimable use to us after we, the members of the H. H. S. Fine Arts Department, enter upon Life is highway. Just preceding the annual treat'-concert by the Chamber of Commerce to the students of H. H. S., the orchestra presented several selections in assembly from the grand opera this year, The Bohemian Girl. . The routine of the orchestra and music in general is becoming more and more modern. Now, various members are learning the art of directing. and soon music classes for the various instruments will be established, Even the orchestra is no longer exempt from mid-semester exams. - - HHS1922 lNinety-sevenj .ALLAGJARGO The mixe Qlc-ze Club l,Jii'i-vloi' - Miss Dow PI'llSlll0lll - Mariam King Vive-l7l'osiclc-111 Ralph lrwin SCi'l'0lil1'j' llvsior lfanl liihi-ariaii l'll'illlCl'S Foa- 'riw Mm-ii oiux Club has iifiiiiiiiii hHisiF1'51lil7lif5Tin'i ifimsfumui s s s U 40 invmhvrs, the bm-si singcrs in svliool, mul lo brlong To ihis 0l'g'ill1lZ21llUll is a high honor.
