Musical 'Working' given at Holidome for CASA benefit On March 12 a large cast of HCC students and members of the community presented the musical 'Working' at the Holidome as a special benefit for the Court Appointed Special Ad- vocates lCASAl program. This important organization helps children get a fair break with custody battles and pro- vides readjustments of abused children. Georgia Premer, president of CASA, reported they raised 33,000 from the project. Based on a book by Studs Terkel, 'Working' is about different jobs and their ups and 1. The checkers strut their stuff as they pan- tomine being at their registers. 2. The cast of 'Working' pose in their tableau during the opening song 'l Hear America Singing'. 3. Jay Frederick does his monologue of the virtues of being a fireman. 4. Jennifer Ball sings about her character's life of being a cleaning woman while Barbara Madison and Kathy Nachtigal dance behind her. ' downs. There are nineteen songs included, some of which were written by James Taylor.Some of the occupations included were firemen, mill workers, businessmen and housewives. After the benefit at the Holidome, the cast returned to Lockman Auditorium to their own stage to give performances March 13 and 14. The musical director was Leon Burke and drama director was Bill Brewer. Lil Braden was the vocal director.

Lockman Players present 'Thoreau' On October 2, 3, 4, and 5, Lockman Players presented the first production of the school year. 'The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail'. The play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Lee is more than a recreation of events leading up to the night of the title. Said Bill Brewer, director, 'We confront a liv- ing, breathing man who knows himself better than we do, yet knows himself not at all.' The playwrite describes Thoreau as the 'sanest man in an insane world'. Action takes place in Thoreau's mind during the night he spent in jail after he refused to pay taxes because of the Mexican War. The cast included nine sophomores, six theatre majors and three Irene Ryan acting scholarship nominees. The three are Kevin Magnus who played Henry Thoreau, John Scott, Bailey, and Jay Fredrick, John Thoreau. The rest of the cast included David Holland as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Sharla Detwiler Bor- ton, Lydian Emerson, Jennifer Ball, Thoreau's mother, Jon Murray, Deacon Ball, Kathy Nachtigal, Ellen, Mike Spencer, Sam Staples, Grant Brewer, Edward, and Brad Lewis, Ed- wards. Townspeople were Tralorna Johnston, Mary Burress, Susan England, Rick Turnell, Maynard Miller and Mike Miller. The play was an entry in the American Col- lege Theatre Festival XIX, which was held at the University of lowa February 21-25.
