HCC Speakers The Dillon Lecture Series brought a variety of speakers to the HCC campus this year. Lynette Woodard, the first female basketball player for the Harlem Globetrotters, spoke on Sept. 4 at the Sports Arena. She explained how her interest in basketball started, and how her faith in God and in herself helped her get where she is today. She closed by asking the audience to repeat 'lf it's to be, it's up to mel' Defense lawyer F. Lee Bailey spoke to a large crowd on Oct. 15. BaiIey's clients have included heiress Patricia Hearst, Alber DeSalvo, Boston stranglerg and U.S. Army Captain Ernest Medina, who was charg- ed with the mass murders of civilians at My Lai. Bailey gave his answer to the drug problem by saying he would attack the national problem by making the use of large sums of cash a felony. By doing this it would cut off the drug users' fuel. He also would give drug dealers the death penalty. He feels we need to make the punish- ment fit the crime. On Feb. 17, Dr. Forrest Tennant, who currently serves as drug advisor for the National Football League and as drug consultant for the Califor- nia Department of Justice, California Highway Patrol and the Los Angles Dodgers, spoke at the Sports Arena. Tennant gave many examples of the effects of using drugs. Drugs, ac- cording to Tennant, supress the body's immune system, making it dif- ficult for injuries to heal. Such is the case with atop left-handed pitcher in the Dodger minor league system who got off on marijuana and co- caine, but his arm stayed sore and never healed. Tennant left the students with these thoughts. First, the drug problem in professional sports is getting better. Second, pro sports managers are also cleaning out bad attitudes. The last speaker of the Dillon series was Dr. Robert Ballard, the undersea explorer who led the team that discovered the wreck of the Titanic. Ballard explained the events that took place during his Titanic adven- ture. On March 22, the National Geographic had a one-hour movie titled 'Secrets fo the Titanic'. Photographs and film of Dr. Ballard's explora- tion team were used. Ballard said that next he would lke to explore the Tyrencan Sea in the Mediterranean where over 10,000 ships of antiquity have sunk. Along with the Dillon Series, HCC also hosted many entertainers for the On Stage series. Some of these included singer Janis Borla, celebri- ty trumpeter Jon Faddis, and Butch Tompson of the Butch Thompson Trio. Other events also took place on campus such as the Indian dances performed by the Indians from Haskell Institute in Lawrence. 1. Lynette Woodard, the first woman Globetrotter, answers question from reporters before her Dillon Lecture. 2. Undersea explorer, Dr. Robert Ballard, talks to students about his adventures in bringing up the Titanic. 3. Defense attorney F. Lee Bailey gives his views on how to solve the drug problem during his lecture at HCC. 9, ,. . 'H , ,A M QMZ, ff f 4
