What's new in 1982-1983? A good question indeed, but how many people really think about its hidden answer? Stepping through the doors of Hut- chinson Community College for the first time, students soon find the answer to this question. Study habits, social life, and leaving home seem to be some of the drastic changes from the familiar good 'ol high school days, to the un- familiar, college life. A new club was also started this year. Dragon Fire met every Monday night to get more students involved in H. C. C. athletic events. While this club was building spirit, a new mascot was on the verge of hatching. Victor the Dragon hatched before the Dodge City game, and now joins the elder dragon to cheer the Blue Dragons on to victory. College means the start of lec- tures, in class. They gradually change just enough to make everyone feel that they have to go out and buy that particular item or outfit. If they don't, then they just aren't in with the crowd. ln 1982 the Pontiac and Chevrolet com- panies came out with the new Z 28's and Trans Am's. These appeared in the latter part of 1981 and soon after almost everywhere a person looked one of these cars could be seen. Another big craze this year was the per- sonalized license plates. As long as the plate contained nine letters or less, they would say almost anything. A large number of students participated in the physical fitness kick my taking school sponsored exercise classes. There were other classes offered at the YMCA or at commercial exercise shops too. No mat- ter where the shops were, students discovered them and joined up to sweat the pounds away. Within the brick walls, daily events occur that assist in the smooth running of the college. Most of the students use the union as a place to pass leisure time, either by watching television or dueling it out at the ping pong or pool table. And then there are some that use it to catch up on studies or as a place to hang out'.' But many other events take place daily besides the fun and games. The union houses many of the college's offices that are essential to running a college, in- cluding the Financial Aids office, Student Services, Special Ser- vices, tutoring, Stuco, an employ- ment office and a publications room. Memories...that's what any yearbook is all about. Without these memories our lives would be empty. The theme for the 1983 Dragon's Tale was chosen to emphasize the fads, trends, and changes that have become a part of our life at Hutchinson Community College. With these trends in mind, the staff sought to capture every aspect of HCC's new beginnings. One major beginning was when the 1983 Dragon's Tale was in production. Now that our book is com- plete, I hope it holds meaningful memories for everyone. I would like to thank my staff for helping me so faithfully all the way through the year. A special thanks goes out to Esther Stoss who without even a word, generously drew all the art work we used to make our book a success. My personal thanks are extended to Wanda Allen who stood by my side and gave me the encourage- ment I needed. I feel this book was a great success.
