lVlen tie for conference title The men's basketball team finish- ed the 1981-1982 season with a 22-7 overall record and a 9-3 conference mark. The team shared the Jayhawk West title with Dodge City. It was the fourth straight 20-win season for head coach Gary Bargen. The team started the season by claiming the annual Quarterback Classic. HCC defeated Seward Coun- ty, Forest Park of St. Louis, Mo. and Snow College of Utah en route to the Classic championship. Dwayne Dale and Randy Stange were named to the 'Quarterback Classic all tourney team. HCC then traveled to Hesston. The team handily defeated the Larks, led by Tony Sommers, who scored 29 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Next stop for the Dragons was the HCC lost Burlington, Iowa Classic. its first game to Moberly, Mo.g then came back the next day to post a nine-point victory over the host team Burlington. At the Northeastern Oklahoma Classic, HCC faced two of the top teams in Oklahoma. On the first night the team lost by 25 points to NEO. The next night the team played Seminole, who came into the game with a perfect 11-0 record. HCC led most of the way against Seminole, before fading late to lose by eight. HCC went on to win its next four games and went into the Christmas break with a 9-3 mark. HCC returned form the break to post two consecutive wins to take the Blue Dragon Classic. The team started conference play on a sour note, with a last second, one point loss to Butler County. HCC then ,went on to defeat Garden City by 15 and Seward County by 13 points. The team's second loss of the con- ference came at the hands of Barton County. HCC lost its next game to ln- dependence, but later was awarded the game by forfeit. HCC caught fire in the final portion of the season. They won eight straight games and moved from third into sole possesion of first place in the Jayhawk West. During that spurt the team clinched at least a tie for the conference title with a 68-64 vic- tory over Pratt. ln the last game of the regular season against Dodge City, HCC needed a win to take the title outright, a win by Dodge would give them a share of the title. Dodge took control of the game in the second half and went on to win 73-67. The team's season came to a sud- den end on week later as Barton County defeated the Dragons if the first round of the Region 6 tourna- ment. Barton's win came with no time showing on the clock as Fludy Sanders sank a free throw to give his team a 61-60 win. HCC had three members average double figures in scoring. Freshman center David Lang led the way with a 12.9 point-per-game average. Freshman foward Tony Sommers wasn't far behind with a 12.3 average, and freshman foward Gary Brown finished with a 11.7 average. Lang also led the team in reboun- ding as he pulled down 8 boards a game. Sophomore Dwayne Dale led the team in assists and steals with 135 and 89. Dale, Lang and Sommers were selected to the Jayhawk Western division first team All-Stars, while Brown was given honorable mention.
