1980 . . . the beginning of a new decade Within the first moments of this year, a new decade was born. What will the 1980's bring for the American people? For Hutchinson Community College? Let's look back for a moment at the 70's. The 70's was the era of the Vietnam War, Watergate, and detente. POW's began their long journey home from a devastating war and tried to re-adjust to a more current American way of life. The mid-70's brought Watergate and the resignation of the first U.S. President in history into the national limelight. The seventies were a time for crisis - in the United States, the energy crisis. Nationwide efforts were made to conserve fuel, gasoline stations were closed earlier and more often, thermostats were turned down, and there was even talk of rationing gas across the country. There were crisis in other parts of the world, too. At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, 11 Israelis were killed by Arab terrorists, which touched off a Mideast crisis that is even controversial to this day. Soviet and American beliefs clashed with the human rights issue, and more currently, the crisis in Iran has produced many feelings about a very controver- sial situation. And, in perhaps one of the most tragic incidents in worldwide history, over 900 persons were dead after a mass suicide-murder ordeal in Jonestown, Guyana. But with all the negative events that occurred over the past ten years, there were also some positive upbeats. The Olympic Games held in 1972 and 1976 united the world together, despite the tragedy at Munich, and managed to produce such new stars as Decathalon Champion Bruce Jenner, and Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci who awed the world with her grace and perfect scores. On the scientific scene, in 1976, Louise Brown was born in Great Britain as the first 'test-tube' baby, which gave hope to childless couples over the world. For the first time in over 000 years, two popes were selected in the some year, 1978, and today, Pope John Paul ll heads the worldwide Roman Catholic church. Ten years ago, most of today's HCC students were only 8-10 years old and weren't too concerned with worldwide dilemmas. Today, however, they are beginning to be faced with the problems of the real world. What will the 1950's bring? Only time will tell.
