harriers take fourth at regionals Two Hutchinson Community College Harriers, Topeka sopho- more Gibert Gonzales, and Kingman freshmen Monty Johnson, finished in the top 257, ofjunior college runners at the national meet this year. Out of 224 individual runners, Gonzales placed 43rd and Johnson finished 58th. As a team, however, the Dragons were inexperienced and lacked depth stronger in previous years' teams. Johnson was top man throughout much of the season, plac- ing in the top ten in most of the meets. The Dragons captured the Southwestern Invitational crown and were runners-up in the Butler Invitational and Hutch Invita- tional. ln Region VI competition, they finished fourth as a team, just missing the right to go to Nationals, as the top three teams advanced. winter student life Winter came early this year to HCC. Although there were only a few major snowstorms this year in Kansas, tempera- tures were often below zero, and students trudged to classes in a variety of winter coats, hots, scarves, and mit- tens. Many students' thoughts changed with the season. Inter- ests turned to Christmas vacation and Blue Dragon basket- ball, although football fans had one last chance to cheer for their favorite teams in the college bowl games. And of course, the Pittsburg Steelers did it again, wrapping up another Super Bowl title - this time from the Los Angeles Rams. American anguish continued as hostages continued to be held in Iran. But on the lighter side, the United States found new heroes in the U. S. Hockey Team and Eric Heiden, who both spotlighted the Olympic Games at Lake Placid. Jimmy Carter and Ronald Regan became the frontrunners in the political party campaigns and primaries. And HCC students looked hopefully toward the day when snow and ice would melt, and spring would arrive. Upper left: A temporary fan shows his support for the womens' basketball team.
