young dragon team struggles through '79 season Twelve sophomores returned to the 1979 Blue Dragon foot- ball team, leaving much of the responsibility to a virtually young team. The Dragons were faced with a rough early schedule as three of the first four games were on the road, and lack of experience on the young team hurt the Dragons in the long run as they posted a 3-7 season record. The HCC coaching staff was almost entirely new this year to Dragon fans. The team was led by first-year head coach Moe Cotter and assistant coaches Wilie Adkins, Clay Johnson, and Dennis Shaver. Adkins was the only returning member of last year's staff. The Dragons were plagued by injuries and turnovers from the beginning of the season, and lost their first five games. But under the leadership of co-captains Jerry Lee and Dean Hille- bert, the Dragons started to turn things around. They celebrat- ed the homecoming activities with the first victory of the sea- son against Highland. A strong Dragon defense held off the Scotties' attack, and a 14-13 win was secured by the Hutchinson team. ln the second victory of the year, a 13-7 win against Pratt, the HCC defense once again held strong to a Pratt at- tempt at a victory, and the HCC offense clinched the victory for M' OFFENSIVE LINE: Back Row: John Brewer, Anthony Penny, George Lawson, Steve Rothe. hcc students enjoy fall Fall came to HCC and the campus filled with students, many of whom were off to college for the first time in their lives. Fall brought baseball and football games, the Kan- sas State Fair, new movies to be seen, and disco dancing. In national events, the Pope visited the United States, the Pittsburg Pirates won an exciting World Series, the Alabama Crimson Tide reigned at the top of the poll for most of the college football season, and on the local scene, many students felt the economic pressures of college life as gasoline prices soared to over a dollar a gallon statewide. Below: Cindy Platt and Sharon Schulte contemplate their strategy in a fierce ping-pong match. Right: Lou Ann Kohl and Anne Berndsen take a breather outside the student union between classes. . the Dragons on a 6-yard scoring pass with just 13 seconds to go in the game. The Dragons lost one more to nationally-ranked Garden City before winning their third game against Independence, 31-7, before a home crowd. HCC was down at the half 7-3, but bounced back to score 28 points in the second half and win the game. In perhaps the most exciting but disappointing game of the year, Butler County scored a touchdown with three seconds left on the clock to sweep past the Dragons and win the season finale, 14-12. The Dragons had led by 12 points through the third quarter until Butler turned around and scored. After finishing their season play, the Dragons were honored with a banquet by the Hutchinson Quarterback Club, and Dean Hillebert was named Most Inspirational Player by his team- mates.
