A Dream Becomes Reality The year 1929 is one to be remem- bered as it was the first year of a new Junior College. After many dreams and much hard work, April 28 marked the birth of Hutchinson Ju- nior College. At the city election where the idea of adding another two years of public education was put to the people of Hutchinson, it was de- cided that the school would come under the supervision of the school board. Hutchinson Junior College offi- cially became part of the state sys- tem of public junior colleges in 1965. The name of the college was then changed to Hutchinson Community Junior College. Recently it has been shortened for everyday use to Hutchinson Community College. For ll years the classes were held in the upstairs of what is now Central Junior High School. The first gradu- ation took place in the junior -high school auditorium, with seven stu- dents graduating. Less than 200 students were en- rolled for the first school year, pres- ently, we have approximately 2,400 enrolled. It was said in the first yearbook, the Scarlue, that: This first year of college is laying the foundation of a larger and better institution, the worth of which will be left in the generations to come. President Cothrun has said this: The early ideals and visions of the future were very sound. The college has had a profound influence upon Reno County and Kansas over these 50 years. We look to a continuation of efforts to maintain excellence and meet the needs of the citizens of our service area. s., t- - mxgi X 2 'N s X N .yt X
