fall play The Effect of Gamma Rays On Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds Paul Zindel's play, The Effect Of Gamma Rays On Man-ln-The-Moon Mari- golds , was presented October 26 and 27 in Lockman Auditorium. The play centers around Tillie, a shy, but intellectually alive teen, whose experiment with flowers exposed to radiation is so well done, that she earns a place as a finalist in a Science Fair. Ruth, her emotionally disturbed sister, is jealous of her sister's accomplish- ments, and violently reacts in scenes, in an effort to win the attention of her mother. Beatrice, the mother, takes out her life's disappointments on her daughters and an elderly woman in her care. When Beatrice is asked to accompany Tillie on stage during the Science Fair, she is at first reluctant, then agrees to go. Shortly before leaving for the fair, her ' mind is changed when Ruth reminds Beatrice of the past. The play is completed shortly after Tillie wins first prize in the Science Fair for her experiment - The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-ln-The-Moon Marigolds. And there was Tillie, lookin' weird as a coot, cranking this model of the atom, while some boy with glasses was reading this stupid speech, says Ruth as she tells her mother about an assembly at school. When Dr. Berg, the school principal calls to tell Beatrice that Tillie will be in the Science Fair, she says, Couldn't you get someone else? There's an Er31Nfl.lllyILOI of work that has to be done around here, because she's not as good about her home duties as she is about Man-In-The-Moon arigo s. 30
