black culture Community Shows Talent The Hutchinson black community celebrated Black Culture Days, Feb- ruary 21-23, with speakers, a talent show, banquet and Miss Black Hutchinson pageant. Ms. Bobbye Humphrey, Wichita State University's Assistant Dean of Faculty Personnel spoke at an HCIC assembly Thursday on the sociologi- cal aspects of being a Black Ameri- can. That night, a wide variety of talent was displayed in a talent show. Per- formers ranged from ten-year old Mark Wickliffe singing and playing his guitar to the seven member ln- spirational Gospel Choir of Hutchin- son. Besides singers, there were dancers and instrumentalists. Hence Parsons, HCJC sociology instructor was emcee. Hence Parson, emcee of the talent show and HCIC instructor, joins the audience in singing Lift Every Voice and Sing. 20 , X I -, - . ,E l N 5 I ' '9' H5 ' 446 fh- N. Michele Blackman Wins Contest Friday night, john Gaston, head of Minorities Studies at WSU presented The Black Experience . The first half of the one-man dramatic read- ing took the audience in a time cap- sule from slavery days to recent times. The second half focused spe- cifically on one outstanding crusad- er for civil rights, the late Dr. Martin Luther King, jr. Michele Blackman, 16, was named the 1974 Miss Black Hutchinson, at the Kansas Inn, Saturday after a ban- quet. She won a S150 scholarship and gift certificate. Hence Parson was Master of Ceremonies and Mayor Larry Knipe was guest speaker. 21
