DEDICATEE Tom Kelly Named Dedicatee By Dragonis Tale Staff Joining the Hutchinson Junior College faculty fifteen years ago, Tom Kelly quickly became a hard worker around the campus. Mr. Kelly, who teaches speech, majored in his- tory and social science at Pittsburg State Teachers College. He taught history and speech at several high schools before coming to juco in 1947. The students at H.J.C. feel he is one of them because of his activities on campus. He is debate coach and head sponsor for the student commis- sion. He is frequently seen getting everything under controlw at student assemblies. To this teacher who has the admiration and respect of the students and faculty of Hutchinson Junior College, we, the Dragon's Tale staff, dedicate the 1962 Dragon's Tale. 1:14-,ki ..,,.,,,. , ...uh 3031 , Wvfffvmzagf Pifliiii ... . Students enjoying themselves while decorating for the winter formal which was December 1 are Pam Shirk. Dana Stewart, Barbara Homan, Bob Henson, and Mike Barnes. X 'llql,,,,,,, 11 COLLEGE LIFE Students Learn to Combine Work With Pleasure ,.....J. ' '7 W! Silence prevails as students spend free hours in solitary study in the junior college library. 'Qt' WW' Smiling as he completes inventory is Jim Wvalker, ku Several sports cars can be seen scattered throughout the Juco park- ing lots. Keith Riley, owner of a red 1960 Corvette, prepares for an after- noon drive after attending his morning classes. Assisting the eheerleaders during a pep assembly is Jerry Williams, dignified president of the Student Commission. operator of the Book Store. . L Mvygiyfw 5. , I2 A n an ' Standing room only is the case at one of the conference basketball games held in the Hutch- inson Sports Arena. Tom Lappin, yearbook photographer, has many hobbies other than photog- raphy. Tom, a member of several national communications organizations, enjoys maintaining and operating a complete ham radio set. Modeling the uniform of the newly orga- ' nized drill team, the Coettes, is Bev Cole- man, drill team member. . . .The time has come and Harlan and Penny Berridge leave the house anticipating an evening of fun. . . Doing homework is always less painful when several students study together. Here Bob Drake, Virginia Bland, and Richard Rader combine efforts on an English assignment while Mary is --an ' Living away from home has its advantages but one of the big disadvantages is having to clean one's own apartment. Frank Regier and Richard Rader found the answer by recruiting Dana Stewart and Mary Beth Young to give the cleaning the female touch. It was the first day of Spring and Bon Wulf, Gary Phillips, and Rod Mueller thought a convertible would be quite appropriate for a trip to Sandys Frankie McMaster is doing her best to convince them that she should be given a ride. Beth Young, Mike Barnes, and Martha Gilbert work on the yearbook. Xin the 5 , , ,.,N t, .. Briefcases can be heavy and the owners of these decided to park them while visiting in the Dragon's Inn before their afternoon classes. COLLEGE LIFE Good Study Habits Become Vital As Students Follow Schedules -,-gi., ' W ,na ' 'A L ,, .WW Several ,Iuco students joined bowling leagues through- out the year. Practicing precision in his delivery of the ball is Bill Songer, a league member. Mike Hawkins, Juco student from Burrton seems to realize the pain undergone by his car when it was hit by another automobile. The take-off of astronaut John Glenn into space Dragon7s Inn to Witness the historical event over on February 20 brought many students to the television. 16 Brother, the things we've got to do to become members, are the thoughts of Phil Adrian and Melinda Hanson as they push dimes across the Dragon's Inn floor with their noses. This was part of the ritual in becoming a Dragonette or Dragon member. These Juco students succeeded in combining work with pleasure. John Kraus and Gary Phillips are making pizzas as employees at a local hang-out, the Pizza Hut. One must stick to a strict financial budget when going to college, but this is ridiculous! These students decided to merely tape over the holes in their tennis shoes instead of buying new ones. . . .The perfect ending to a lovely evening. The following week-end, the official 1961 football season started when the Dragons traveled to Tonkawa, Oklahoma, and were defeated 13-0. Against Coffeyville the Dragons opened conference play and were drop- ped 19-0 in a well-played game. Travel- ing again to Oklahoma, the Dragons were impressive although the game went to the strong Northeastern Miami team 27-6. Playing on home ground again, the Dragons lost a close game to the Parson Cardinals 20-13. The next week-end, the Dragons moved over to Pratt to meet the nation's number one team, the Pratt Beavers, and were downed 85-7. Because they used an ineligible player, Pratt later forfeited the game to Hutch, giv- ing the Hutch gridmen a 2-0 win, the first victory', of the season. Ron Katzenmeier Willard Kasselman Quarterback Guard Co-Captain Co-Captain Hoping to break the losing habit, the Dragons met Dodge City in the HJC home- coming game. Following a touchdown within the first minute of action, the Dragon fans awaited the first field vic- tory of the year. Victory hopes were dimmed quickly and the Conquistadors rambled on to a 46-12 victory. Moving to Garden City and playing before the Garden Juco homecoming crowd, the Dragons posted their first vic- tory by triumphing over the Bronc Busters 13-0. Striving to keep the winning habit, the Hutch squad was held to a scoreless tie by Independence while playing in rain. The hopes were smashed when the Ark City Tigers won 21-0. The Hutchinson Blue Dragons finished fourth in the Jayhawk Conference Stand- ings with a record of 3 wins, 4 losses and 1 tie. The over-all season record was 3 wins, 6 losses and 1 tie. The season was an inter- esting one although the Dragons did not have a winning record. COLLEGIAN STAFF Budding Journalists Prepare For Interesting Careers Fortified with thorough theory training, the 1961-62 Junior Collegian staff began a successful year of newspaper publication. Staff members rotated assignments at the year's beginning until permanent positions 'were assigned by Mrs. Arless Eilerts, adviser. The editorial staff coordinated efforts with the business staff to publish campus news and local advertising in the bimonthly issues. The staff cooperated with Dragon's Tale staff members to plan and sponsor the annual Big Man On Campus Dance. The third successful Collegian year ended with a banquet held by the yearbook staff for the journalism depart- ment. K Assistant editor Marc Seibert and editor Larry W. Staff members started with tentative plans laid out over the summer, and under the direction of Mrs. Arless Eilerts, sponsor, and Mr. James T. McLain, financial adviser, expanded them into the Drag0n's Tale, 1962. After the last deadline had been met, the staff planned their annual publications banquet, at which they previewed their finished product and wrapped up an enjoyable year of working together. Books were distributed to students at the all-school signing party at the year's end. STUDENT COMMISSION Student Governing Body Guides College Social Activities Revising their outdated constitution and taking a look at their own organization, the nine members of the 1961-62 Student Commission evaluated the effectiveness of the student body government. Com- mission members planned football Homecoming and track queen festivities and sponsored after- game dances as well as the Winter and Spring For- mals. The student governing body also planned and assisted at several assemblies. Representatives of the Commission attended three state meetings to coordinate efforts with other junior college student governments.
