The Dean Says. . Dean Ellsworth R. Briggs ln a private plane owned by Chalmers and Borton Con- struction Company, Dean Ellsworth Briggs and Supt. Lowell Small flew to Chicago for a conference on IUCO accreditation. Others in the group transacted official school business. Left to Right: Supt. Small, Mrs. Gordon Jones. Gordon Jones, pilotg Dean Briggs, Earl W. Pearce, business manager: Leslie Phillips, superintendent of buildings and grounds. A Kansas University electronics research sci- entist recently said that high intelligence was desir- able in his field but an average boy willing to work hard and be dedicated to his task could readily succeed in it. One can generalize that there will be worthy tasks for all dedicated persons in the Space Age world. It will further shrink our earth and compel us to quicken the solution of its problems of population. of human welfare, of political co-existence-of the material and spir- itual well being of us all. However. we are all called upon to develop ourselves fully and to serve God and mankind con- tinuously at the outer limits of our abilities. De- votion to Christianity. to our country and its des- tiny, and to self-realization, will let us be satisfied with no less than our best. This yearbook will keep bright your memories of this year, the second in which Phi Theta Kappa has accentuated the honor to outstanding scholars formerly given only by the Dean's Honor Roll. We were proud of the record made by our football team. We were overjoyed when our bas- ketball team won the Western Division Conference Championship again, and. after Winning the Ar- kansas City Regional Tournament, won a berth in the national tournament. And as we go to press we are hoping that in the next few weeks our trackmen and debaters can retain the national championships they now hold. The many types of other activities pictured herein exemplify the HJC policy of attempting to provide participation for all who want it and developing talents of every kind. The faculty and administration have been most happy with the progress and development shown by students this year. Speaking for the faculty. I want to wish you a life of distinction, outstand- ing service and adequate iinancial reward. We hope HJC has made worthy contributions to your success in all areas of life. Ellsworth R. Briggs Dean
