Infant 1960 presented many space-age problems. But the Sixties will not be as awe- some as they may seem if we find in college new sources of personal strength, broader hori- zons of knowledge, more satisfactory human relationships, and peace within ourselves. Happy days in the new decade-and always. -Jeanie Hardy, Editor ul .ga l15gWaw.1.w--A Q . A wi mm: .gm .. my mm an , .-:ff ll 1' E QW . The Dean Says. . Dean Ellsworth R. Briggs ln a private plane owned by Chalmers and Borton Con- struction Company, Dean Ellsworth Briggs and Supt. Lowell Small flew to Chicago for a conference on IUCO accreditation. Others in the group transacted official school business. Left to Right: Supt. Small, Mrs. Gordon Jones. Gordon Jones, pilotg Dean Briggs, Earl W. Pearce, business manager: Leslie Phillips, superintendent of buildings and grounds. A Kansas University electronics research sci- entist recently said that high intelligence was desir- able in his field but an average boy willing to work hard and be dedicated to his task could readily succeed in it. One can generalize that there will be worthy tasks for all dedicated persons in the Space Age world. It will further shrink our earth and compel us to quicken the solution of its problems of population. of human welfare, of political co-existence-of the material and spir- itual well being of us all. However. we are all called upon to develop ourselves fully and to serve God and mankind con- tinuously at the outer limits of our abilities. De- votion to Christianity. to our country and its des- tiny, and to self-realization, will let us be satisfied with no less than our best. This yearbook will keep bright your memories of this year, the second in which Phi Theta Kappa has accentuated the honor to outstanding scholars formerly given only by the Dean's Honor Roll. We were proud of the record made by our football team. We were overjoyed when our bas- ketball team won the Western Division Conference Championship again, and. after Winning the Ar- kansas City Regional Tournament, won a berth in the national tournament. And as we go to press we are hoping that in the next few weeks our trackmen and debaters can retain the national championships they now hold. The many types of other activities pictured herein exemplify the HJC policy of attempting to provide participation for all who want it and developing talents of every kind. The faculty and administration have been most happy with the progress and development shown by students this year. Speaking for the faculty. I want to wish you a life of distinction, outstand- ing service and adequate iinancial reward. We hope HJC has made worthy contributions to your success in all areas of life. Ellsworth R. Briggs Dean Able Persons Operate School System Hutchinson Junior College future is discussed by Dean Ellsworth Briggs and members of the College Board of Regents. They are from right to left, Mrs. Wendell Holmes, Wesley Nunnemaker, Leroy Esau, Tom Armour, and Jack Maloney. Unable to attend the meeting was Dick Klassen. Dragons Head Into NjCAA Tawny: The Hutchinson Jr. College Blue Dragons blasted their way into the National Junior College Tournament by dumping Pueblo, Colorado 85-78 in first round play. Fine all-round scoring was evident as French and Channell each hit 21 points and Brown got 19. In the second round game Hutchinson defeated Lindsey-Wilson of Columbia, Kentucky 91-75. The Dragons looked like cham- pions as they hit evenly and played an outstanding defensive game. French hit 22 points, Fouser 21, Channell 14-, Brown and Sears each hit 12. In the semi-final game Tyler, Texas cashing in on Hutchin- son's coldest streak of the season built a ten-point lead at half- time and defeated the Blue Dragons 82-80 in overtime. Easy lay-ups, perfect field shots and free throws refused to go through for the Dragons. It seemed Tyler couldn't miss. The second half saw the Blue Dragons storm back in time for John Channell to hit a last second shot to send the game into overtime. When Tyler needed points Pete Petrou 6'9 center connected in his hottest streak in the tourney. He carried 4 fouls through-out most of the last half and several times it seemed evident that he had committed the fifth hut, through the deafening roar, the of- ficials didn't agree and Petrou left the game for only the last thirty seconds of the overtime after collecting 32 points. Hutch- inson had won 25 straight games at the home court before losing to the tall Texan team who were capable of fielding an average 6'3 team. ANOTHER REBOUND for Bill French in the tourney opener. AN INDIAN IN TROUBLE, Bill French and lohn Channell surround Pueblo Indian as they attempt to take away his rebound. Hutchinson won 85-78. Parsons, Kansas, Takes Championshzlly Fans watch exciting game between Lindsey-Wilson and Phoenix. Lindsey'-Wilson won by a decisive margin. Parsons, Kansas dumped Tyler, Texas 73-71 to gain the NJCAA championship in the final game of the tour- nament. A last second shot by Leonard Kelley gave the Parsons team the victory. In the consolation game the Cameron Aggies of Lawton, Oklahoma defeated a downhearted, tired Blue Dragon team 97-85. Hutchinson tied the score many times, trailed by ten at intermission, and lost the contest before a capac- ity crowd at the Sports Arena. Cameron collected 31 free throws in the first half and hit 29 of 56 attempts in the game. Hutchinson hit a miserable 28 out of 71 field shots and this made all the difference. This gave Cameron third place in the tourney and placed Hutchinson as the sixth place team. In the all-tournament team Hutchinson placed Bill French and achieved honorable mention with Darrell Fouser, both sophomores. Doug Pendygraft of Lindsey- Wilsoii Was named as the NlVlost Valuable Playeri' of the 1960 NJ CAA tournament. ' I , . . OW WHAT A NIGHTL the strain of the game shows plainly on the faces of the Dragon coaches. The Blue Dragons opened their 1959-60 basketball season with a 69-78 victory over a highly respected HBH team coming from Fort Hays. Bill French suffered a fractured nose in an under-basket scramble in the opener. The Juco cagers then blasted the Scottsbluff, Nebraska team 89-41 at the Nebraskans' home court. The Scottsbluff team made the fatal mistake by playing a zone defense on the vis- itors and Hutch made good use of it by assigning Wrecking responsibilities to Paul Vega. And wreck he did. He fired 6 straight baskets from the 15-20 foot range. Ken Sears collected 18 points in this contest. Vega, playing less than one half. got 17.
