We have striven to live up to its purpose of creating, maintaining, and ex- tending throughout the home, school, and commu- nity high standards of Christian character. Our activities have been many and have ranged anywhere from social dances to the cleaning of monuments. Also, this year we took an active part in the Albany Youth and Government Assembly. MP A school publication serves not only as a medium for the voicing of student opinion, but also it provides a means for advertising and promoting extracurricular activities. The editors and staff of the Tech Engineer have striven to accomplish both of these aims. A complete coverage has been given to the school happenings. ln addition, cer- tain features have been included such as special activities and serious minded editorials. The Tech Engineer has striven to provide the school with an opportunity to develop the 2 mitaff journalistic talent of its students and to keep the entire student body informed as to its functions. lt has rapidly become one of the most prominent organizations at Tech and will undoubtedly remain as a working example of our Freedom of the Press. Thanks to a large and able staff, to Mr. Pelosi, our faculty advisor, and to an enthusias- tically interested student body, the school paper for i958-l959 has been built into a powerful, influential and enlightening source of student communication. j NEWSPAPER STAFF ffditnr-in-Cl1ief ..... However, its members can boast achievement in scholarship as well as in athletics. 1 The present members are distributed among the different sports at Tech ranging from football to crew. The big events ofthe year are our raffle, spring dance, and semi-annual excursions to Alle- gheny Mountains. Many thanks to Mr. Nicholas Pelosi, our school faculty advisor. i 2- .1 4,2 ln the last few years bowling has grown tre- mendously. Tech has been one of the pioneers which has promoted its growth. The Bowling Club has started many young men on the road to a game which can be enjoyed all year round. This year the Bowling Club has had a highly successful season. Although the number of teams has dropped, the same number of students participated, since the teams increased their membership from three to four men. The four-man team brought about a keen- er competitive spirit. Club All of this could not have been possible with- out the aid of our faculty advisor, Mr. Harold Hoeffler. Every Tuesday Mr. Hoeffler supervised a free practice session at the Franklin Alleys. He conducted a clinic tor our starting bowlers and gave helpful tips to the students who had been bowling somewhat longer. i Q 5 svff' A-Z'-sw' ri BOWLING CLUB President .......... In striving to achieve this goal the cheerleaders have expended endless energy to our assembly rallies as well as onthe playing field. Our appreciation is extended to both the faculty and the student body without both of whose cooperation our past year would not have been so successful. A special vote of thanks goes to Mr. Nicholas Pelosi, our faithful faculty ad- visor, for his time and effort in supporting our program. 712 ik 'J im, Club Sigma Phi Sigma, known to many as the Tech Chemistry Club, was formed for the purpose of extending the abilities of all students interested in chemistry - especially those phases of chem- istry related to chemical engineering. Our program forthe year has been varied. Plant trips, lectures, demonstrations and club proiects were included to suit the particular interests of each of our members. The advanced work was especially beneficial to the seniors in that it acquainted them with dif- ferent areas of employment in the various fields of chemistry. The members of Sigma Phi Sigma would like to express their thanks to everyone who has been connected with the club for their won- derful cooperation. SIGMA PHI SIGMA President ....... Robert L. Also, at least once during the year a plant trip is held in order to provide us with an oppor- tunity to gain practical knowledge in the use of mathematics in industry. NS After winning all of our meets this year our Tech Swimming Team had a very good chance of retaining the Syracuse Cup. Our victory at the All High Meet secured the cup for us for the third year. Runner Lafayette had 28 points. f mem, Because of its rugged training and high condition- ing, Cross Country is considered the toughest sport of the year. But the fine efforts put forth by our 1958 team proved that none was too hard for Tech's ath- letes. First and third All High berths went to the deserving men, Ron Smith and Joe Marando. Although our team finished sixth in interhigh competition, the team should be commended for its hard work and fine spirit. Mordeno, W. Otto, F. Mathewson Fwilvall lndeed, the most colorful and spirited sport of the Buffalo Public High Schools Athletic program is the annual fall football classic. The twelve schools participating all strive for the coveted Harvard Cup which is awarded after the playoff game on Thanksgiving Day. Although our team did not qualify for the championship, left end Jerry Armstrong made second team All High and proved to be a valuable receiver for quarterback Jim Whitehead, who had an honorable mention along with backs, Timmy Jordan and John Spanitz. Fred Mathewson fsecond teaml proved to be very aggressive and the stalwart of our offensive and defensive lines. The absence of vet- eran back Sam Greco due to an iniury received in practice dealt a hard blow to the whole team. gg This year has been one of preparing our team for gains in the coming year. However, we were not without accomplishments which we can point out with pride. Tech's basketball team gained the honor of having two men, John Buczynski and John Spanitz, chosen on the All-High team. One of the Highlights ot this season was the Varsity-Faculty Basketball game. High man forthe Faculty was Mr. Milledge with twenty-five points. The game provided many thrills especially the last eight seconds when the Varsity managed to score its winning points bringing the score to 43-42. Many thanks to our coach, Mr. Witmer, for the supervision ot our training this season. BASKETBALL TEAM Row One E. Reynolds, J. Whitehead, C. Tomasi, G Caputi, M. Kowalski, N. Neu, T. Brown Row Two G. Lee Witmer, for his efforts in helping our team attempt to reach the top and in making Tech the most feared club to meet. 1.9 K X This year Tech has a young experienced team with a good potential tor a fine season. We are sure this group will undoubtedly represent Tech in accord- ance with the fine traditions for which Tech men are noted throughout the city. Practice begins as soon as the snow melts and some even start before and practice on the indoor courts. The longer the training period the better the team will be. We are looking forward to a fine season with Mr. Albert Haas in the coaching position. VECN- TECH. 1gci-1. TECH QQ J. The first big event of the crew season was the American National School-boy Regatta in Philadel- phia. A four-oared shell ventured there stroked by Linn Hyde, and brushed by Hoth Thome and Richard Cooke. Although they had bad luck at the start, they were able to finish second. Later we formed a lighter weight which paid off. At the All-High Meet it took first place.
