THEME In this golden anniversary issue the staff presents a record of events and scenes, not only of the Gay Nineties but also of the present. THE CALENDAR, founded in 1892 by the late George S. Buck, has been continuously published for fifty years, the first public high school publi- cation in this area. That this issue may bring to its readers happy moments, the recollection- of treasured friend- ships, and the joy of golden memories is the sincere wish of the staff. -The Editors ' F ' W if 'W A W V .. . Halloran-one of the outstanding teachers of English in this city. She had the gift of passing on to her pupils her own appreciation of the beauty that good literature possesses. She had the enviable ability to he able to retell in a most interesting manner all that she had read. Hers was a generous spirit full of life and humor. She liked people. Along with her faith in her fellow- men was a strong and implicit faith in God. The world is much better and happier for her fine example. 1 The Calendar L .... no in is when inner in A l I ' 1892-1942 VICTORY Salvatore Grassia, Joseph Cirrincione and Caliope Panoyiotou. This committee composed of the Misses Allen, Caseman, Engel, Parker, Saul, Shank, and Ziemanng Mrs. Travis and Messrs. Glunz, Linderman, and Provost evolved the idea of looking on our school membership as an army to be known as the Hutchinson Victory Army. This ear has been a ear of achievement for the senior irls of 140. Under the racious and devoted .X . Y . . . g . . g . supervision of MISS Erb, the glrls have maintained a very high scholastic record, won athletic recog- nition, captured attendance awards, and in general have striven to cooperate fully and to respond heartily to all school campaigns. Senior meetings, assembly programs, ffuiet study periods, and vol- unteer work now form a kaleidoscope that will make reminiscences de ightful. Together with each happy memorv that will come back to us, the watchwords-worthiness, poise, and graciousness- which have characterized the s irit of 140 this ear, will also remain with us. P Y Studyroom 140 Vliss Harriet Erb To direct the senior class activities and social affairs, when the class numbers more than three hundred, is a task which requires re-vision, tact, enthusiasm, and wise judgment. Miss Erb has been senior class adviser for a num er of years, and out of her experience has come understanding. To be studyroom adviser and guidance councillor, when the registration of the studyroom numbers more than one hundred fifty, is a position which necessitates wise use of time, sympathy, and fair- ness. Miss Erb has been studyroom adviser in 140 for a number of years and out of her work with girls has come skill in bringing about a fine report. We have been well represented in athletic, scholastic, and extra-curricular activities. We are proud of the fact that we have bought more defense stamps than any other Hutch- inson studyroom, that we have the largest number of members in the Junior Red Cross, and that we have several times won the attendance banner for our division. We would like to express our sincerest - gratitude to Miss Pierce for all that she has done for us to make this year at Hutchinson pleasant and profitable. The Calendai vw! The amusing play, directed by Mrs. Edith Lankler, the procession, the archbearers, and the prom', were all parts of the joyous occasion. The officers were elected by majority vote of the studentsg therefore, they can be considered the popular choice of the entire Junior class. It is the custom to give a junior boy the I-li-Y Award, for outstanding service, scholarship, and athletics. Miss Henrietta Penny, the junior class adviser, deserves much credit for helping to make this day a success.-She has been assisted by a hard-working committee. Junior Officers VV ith the helpful advice of Miss Kate L'Hommedieu as studyroom adviser the junior girls of 200 have immensely enjoyed this year. Studyroom 200 has won several honors this year. One is the achievement of holding the second highest position in the school in the selling of War Savings and Defense Stamps. Another is receiving the Third Division Attendance Balmer for every quarter of this year. These girls are represented in all the various sports such as baseball, tennis, soft ball and badminton. Every girl is looking forward to her senior year next year with keen anticipation. We have aided Hutchinson's victory effort by purchasing stamps and bonds steadily so that we have led the rooms several times, and have always been high on the list. We have had many on the honor and merit rolls. Three members of the debate teams were from 3404 the Junior vice president and the irl marshall are from -340. We have enrolled in the Junior Red Cross, and are knitting sweaters, afgians, and scarves. Studyroom 'W 290 Some of Miss Kate Daley's boys this year belong to the junior class, and some belong to the sophomore class so that, for the first time in years 290 is not rimarily a junior boys' studyroom. Many of the boys have joined the Junior Red Cross, some of them have made the honor roll, and some are on the merit roll. They have taken part in both interroom and school sports. Their record in the sale of War Savings stamps and bonds is one they are all proud of. The boys look forward to being seniors and juniors next September. The Girls mall Council The desired goal of every member of the Girls Small Council is to serve Hutchinson-Central High School in every way that she can. Under the experienced, able, sympathetic guidance of Mrs. Edith Lankler, our adviser, we have tried to live up to this aim in every way. The executive group is known as the Small Council. It consists of 21 members-the chairmen of the various committees and the elected officers. This year's leaders are as follows: Angeline Canale, presidentg Louise Heinz, vice president, Ann Mc Crillis, secretaryg Caliope Panayiotou, treasurer, Geraldine Lewis, recorder, and Madeline Di F iglia, corresponding secretary. A The Large Council which consists of approximately 300 members assumes many duties throu hout the school. We strive to maintain order in the lunchroom, on the stairways, in the halls. in the lilrrary and in the office. Girls on the Large Council volunteer their services, as they fully realize that to receive anything valuable from their education they must learn to serve. One project we sponsored this year was the knitting of an afghan for the Red Cross. We feel that the council has done excellent work and know it can be depended upon to continue with as willing a group of girls next fall. Miss Carman selected Margaret Lukacovic, Dorothy O'Sullivan, and Rose Marie Cardulla. Adele Gichtin was elected Chairman of the hoard and all collections and accounts were handled entirely by her. The Calendar Staff has worked diligently in order to publish a fiftieth anniversary yearbook commanding admiration and attention. We have accomplished this through the cooperation of the senior class and school organizations which help sponsor the book. We deeply thank the faculty and students who have so willingly contributed their ideas, time, and talent. The Honor Cards are presented during an assembly program at the end of each quarter. Mr. Harry I. Good, associate superintendent of schools, and a former teacher at Hutchin- son, spoke at one assembly, and our retired assistant principal William E. Weafer was warmly welcomed at another. The pupils placing first this year are Ralph Cryesky, Dorothy F agarasz, Adele Gichtin, Anthony Ilardo, Beatrice Lippa, Angeline Mills, Richard Oberlander and Anna Tomasula. Others have also made excellent records. The Hutchinson Honor Award system brings before the school the pupils who excel in their studies. Averages are figured each quarter, and a pupil with an average of 9001, or over is given an Honor Card at a special assembly. The first award on the card is a brown seal for an Hg the second, a blue seal for an HCg the third, a silver seal for an HCHQ and the winner of all the honors completes his card with a gold seal for an HCHS. Roses are presented to the three highest at each Honor Assembly. Miss Hall and Miss Baldwin head the committee. THE HONOR ROLL-first row Cam C. The Girl Reserves The Girl Reserve Club is composed of girls who are interested in both social and recreational activities. The most outstanding event of the year was the city wide conference held on March 7, ' at which all Girl Reserves in Buffalo gathered. In the earlier part of the school year, a tea was given especially for the mothers. They enjoyed this because it gave them an opportunity to get acquainted with one another and to see what the girls do at their meetings. During the Christmas Season pic- tures were collected and made into books for the children in hospitals. Mrs. Earl McGrath advises us. The Attendance Committee offers to your representatives the op ortunity of collecting the facts and figures necessary to honor those studyrooms that are outstanding in punctuality and regular attendance. The committee members have the pleasure of introducing new ideas to promote at- tendance in our school. Through discussion groups, talks with those who manage the attendance of academic and elementary schools in Buffalo, and other notable advisers, your representatives are given an experience which they will long remember. They represent you, but it is through your individual eiforts and determination that they are able to speak well for your studyrooms! The Hutchinson i C537 Band This year under the direction of Mr. Gerard C. Tobia, we have enjoyed many performances of the band. During the football season, the band, in their brown and blue uniforms, never missed a ame. Many s ectators enjoyed hearing their favorite college marches, and also appreciated the bands skill in ibrming the H , and many other letters, for ours is a marching band. As a result of Mr. Tobia's hard work and ability, the band gave an excellent performance in the music festival. We are proud to be one of the best high school bands in the city, and proud to have Mr. Tobia directing. 1 The orchestra, under the capable leadership of Mr. Gerard C. Tobia, is one of the finest organiza- tions in Hutchinson. Its purpose is to help the members interpret good music by careful study. The assembly programs were made more enjoyable through the use of the orchestra. The Music ' Festival in May required many weeks of preparation with the orchestra. We contributed our ser- vices willingly. Mr. Tobia and the members feel that it is a great honor to have successfully ac- complished this much. We think the orchestra is an excellent means by which we can do our share for the school service. N r 1 Commerce Club The year began with the election of Teresa Kruly, the first girl president of the Commerce Club. A delightful trip to the Museum started the year's program. A Christmas party and an interesting tri through the Hotel Statler followed. The Commerce Club serviced room IG for the Defense Salvage Committee, and its correspondence workers aided the Fellowship Committee by addressing and.mailing the letters every two weeks to Hutchinson service men. The club donated the money usually used for a farewell party to this work. We intend to continue our united work efforts and to ask our successors for the same cooperation. Miss Hall is our adviser. During the school year of 1942 a new club was organized under the name of the American Boys Club. Mr. Linderman, our assistant principal, is the adviser. Our aims are to foster school spirit and to render the utmost of service to our alma mater. One of the services rendered to the school during the year was the fingerprinting of the students. The present officers are: Paul Vasques, presidentg Thomas Di Gaetano, vice-presidentg Angelo Marranca, secretaryg Scotty Lapi, treasurcrg and James Migliore, sergeant-at-arms. This year the committee started its ac- tivities with a Get-Acquainted Tea on October 31. Then a dance was held in the large gymnasium a few days before Christmas. This year the committee has sponsored three dances which were en- joyed by the entire school. In addition to its usual activities, the committee is knitting six-inch squares for an afghan. The membership is composed of boys and girls appointed from senior, junior, and high sophomore classes. Tawasi has had an enjoyable time this year. Under the direction of Mrs. Eaton we accomplished much. In addition-to our regular meetings, a successful skating party was held at Scott's Roller Rink. At Easter we took pleasure in sending cards to Hutchinson boys in the service. We also made a con- tribution to the Good Fellowship Committee to help defray the expense of posta e for mail sent to the boys. Office Monitors Anita Regmelli has been in charge of the organization and assignment of oiiice monitors during this school year, and has kept these faithful and loyal workers for Hutchinson in constant attend- ance at the switchboards and on messenger service. The girls give generously and willingly of their time aside from school hours, many of them volunteerin for early morning as well as for after-school service, remaining at the board until the office closes. Under the able leadership of Miss Wenk, Hi-Y secretary, and Miss Tzetzo, our adviser, we have tried to meet all ' the Hi-Y requirements. Our members are equally divided, freshmen and sophomores. The freshmen, next year, will carry on our club, while the sophomores will be voted into He Iota Pfe. fri-I RI-I-first row: Lulrsch, altemate repre- ntative: Bateman, altemate representa- ve: Short, council representative: Mary zetzo, adviser: Pecoraro, president: Canale ce-president: Ragone, treasurer: Marshall, Ish reporter: second row: Podlewski, ubbard, J. Studyroom 438 p The girls of studyroom 438 have enjoyed a happy year in 1941-42 and a very successful one, with a l higher percentage of attendance and more girls on the honor roll than room 438 has ever had before. l They will be sorry to leave their sunny room on the top floor, with its fine new pictures, and they will miss their good friend and adviser, Miss Ruth Craig, who has worked so hard to help them succeed. The girls will always have pleasant memories of their freshman or sophomore year in room 438 The Service Group at the Annex consists of Home Room Captains, two for each room, one elected by pupils in the room and the other appointed by the teacher, and monitors for office, clinic, and lunch periods. The captains constitute a Board of Managers for school activities, the Dividend club, ticket salesmen and advertisers for not only the Annex affairs, but also for fostering Main Building activities among' the Annex students. These captains, together with the monitors, have been a very reat help to the principal and have been generous of their time and effort in performing the duties t at have been assigned to them. , I The Annex Service Group ANNEX SERVICE GROUP-Erst row: Manna, Caruso, Ernst, Duffy, Fatta, Karpowicz, Figlioti, Schadlens, Mascig second row: Kolodzie, Scott, Mills, Wies- niewska, Lemke, Hiller, McKenna, Sham- aly: third row: Rich, Bucki, Carr, Dutkiewicz, Trammell, Borders, Moses. Football Although Hutchinson's football team of 1941-42 fell short of its customary football standard, it made quite an improvement on last year's record. Coach Kalbfleisch produced a top-notch fight- ing eleven. The 1941-42 squad tasted victory in its first three contests, but, unfortunately, due to injuries., it conceded its last three games. The scores were: Hutch 34, Grover Cleveland 73 H. 12, Riverside 65 H. 7, Lafayette 03 H. 0, Bennett 20g H. 0, McKinley 20g H. 0, Kensington 14. From this well trained squad Charles Costelli was placed on the All High-Team as uard, Leon Wilcox earned the position of fullback on the second team all-high, and Vincent Mugoletto, Paul Vasques and x, mr , r onaro, owie, 1 Cappellim, Cattarin, Zannello, DeNi Frank Nappo won honorable mention. As usual, the Hutchinson basketball team of 1941-42 had a comparatively successful year. Al- though most of the varsity players had graduated, Coach Ray Glunz managed to get together a team that ended u tied for fourth place, and, but for a few unlucky breaks, might have taken the cup. From the five iieenwitted Hutch cagers Frank N appo was chosen, as one of the most outstand- ing players in the league, for All-High honors in both the Courier-Express and the Bufalo Evening News. Fortunately with most of the lettermen returning next year, we shall be looking forward to even greater successes. SASKETBALL-first row: Kelly, E are, Geraci, L. Under the experienced guidance of Coach George Kalbfleish, we have high hopes for t1iisseason,s recruits of brawny potential Ruths and DiMaggios '. Since most of the 1941-42 baseball team is composed of veterans with the excep- tion of a few other talented youths who, after making their debut this year, will carry on the honor of Hutchinson, we are sure our hopes will not have been in vain. The boys who made up this year's swimming squad did not enjoy a particularly successful season. 1943, however, gives every indication of bringing a real measure of success to the boys and to Mr. Ebling. This year the Hutchinson-Masten meet was the only tie ever recorded in the annals for the Syracuse Cup meets. The scores of the meets stood as follows: Hutch 11, South Park 58g Hutch 21, Lafayette 54-3 Hutch 15, Kensington 60g Hutch 21, Bennett 54g Hutch 35, Technical 405 Hutch 36, Fosdick-Masten 363 Hutch. 24, Riverside 51, Hutch 25, East 50. wimming y 4 IMMING TEAM-.first row: Faganl, agliana, Abrams, Grasaia, manager: Mr. ling, coach, Caruana, captain: Herman, iheit, Hines, assistant manager: second : Thomas, Gaskin, Johnson, Zannello, artolq, Nowaniadly, Handy, Grenoa. 1 C693 Chameli, Ambrose, Rizzo, Kennedy: C703 F + w 1 1 CROSS COUNTRY-first row: Barbe 0'Dcy, Echols, captain: Burt, Kennedy second row: Peeler, manager: William: Ames, Small, Barrett. e on y . Cross Country Possessing all the qualities of perseverance and endurance which have brought victory to America 4 through the ages, Hutchinson's 1941-4-2 cross-country team has met with fairly admirable success. With Coach Kalbfleisch plugging behind them all the way, the boysmet their competitors with all the qualities of true sportsmen. Since this year's team was composed almost entirely of lowerclassmen all Mr. Kalbfleisch has to predict about next season's runners is just watch out for them! l Afterviewin the results of the tennis team try-outs, we may look forward to an unusually suc- cessful season. glfith Doc. Eagan giving the fine points and technique of court maneuvering, the boys y will be ready, willing, and able for their first match. These boys must be congratulated for the Hue reputation of sportsmanship which has been handed down to them by former Hutch teams and which they are expected to uphold in all their encounters.
