Vaiedictory The four years that we have spent at Hutchinson, fellow classmates, are crystal' li:,cd, tonight, in a single moment of goodebye, a blending of exaltation and poignant regret. Our hearts quicken at the memory of the golden heritage handed down to us through Alma Mater. We can look at the past and see things in their true perspective. Now, we can only smile at the memory of that first year of adjustment, when, pain' fully conscious of our inexperiencc, we were so eager for the gifts Alma Mater had in store for us. How we worked and how we played through the next year! What a glorious sense of achievement we experienced during our seventy-fifth anniversary! And, now, to-night, as we sit together, in hushed thoughtfulness, one idea dominates our minds-- Carry on. Even as the ancient Greeks, in their torch races, strove to keep the sacred flame alight, so must we carry with us and keep ever burning the torch of our Alma Mater. If we keep it high above, and ever before us, the shadows will fall behind, We have spent four of the happiest years of our lives under the guidance of that light. It burned hrilliauitly through our victories and shone stead- fastly, tenderly, through our defeats. It glowed with a warmth and mellowncss through our friendships and blazed the way to new and fascinating worlds of thought. Tonight, fellow classmates, a bit of that light has penetrated into each of our hearts. If we tend it faithfully, it will always illuminate the present and burn away the mist of the future, preserving for tomorrow, yesterday. ' You, Mr, Thomas, and, you also, members of the faculty, have been the high priests of that sacred flame. Patiently, steadfastly, you have kept it alive and have interpreted its meaning to us. Honor, Courage, Loyalty, Service. How those words ring in our hearts! With what loving affection we shall remember the teachers of these lessons! We, who have had the privilege of your friendship shall carry away with us the beauty that lives in the memory and becomes the very stuff of which our souls are made. OUR ALMA MATER 'Thou Spirit of a mighty heritage Let thy golden memories ,Be ozw inspiration In this ever clmnging trend From tlic old order to the new! , CARMELLA Coiuu-roms. President's Address Class Day is a time'honored institution at Hutchinson. Today the class of 1931 has the happy privilege of welcoming teachers, parents, friends and schoolmates to the exercises. Graduation is not far off. We know that means staring life on our own responsi- bility, and we realize that many obstacles are before us, but we are confident that the lessons learned in this, our beloved school, will help us to solve some of life's problems. As we enter the active life as citizens of the Hnest country in the world, the services we render should be fraught with earnest effort and willingness to give the best that is in us to the furthering of the highest ideals of citizenship. As citizens it will be our privilege, not only to promote and cherish our American institutions, but also to obey the established government. 45
