Hipqler 2' Class Poem Pilgrims, our shrine before us now Lies at our resting feet, Lo, it doth glow inviolate A cool and fair retreat: Not as spoilsfladen eonquerors Returning o'er the sea Nor as the runner with course run Do we come unto thee: But, souhsustaiincd, with heart-heats A-following the gleam We've tread our road, aspiring To find the ended dream. The dream! The solace and desire, Wliich, hy itself, is true! We know not what far dcstinies Our dreams will lead us to. Experience we've gleaned these years Has forged and tempered sound The strong links of the golden chain By which to life we're bound. Ideals we've cherished on our way Companion-travelers true, These treasures ever will he stored From old days to the new. Across the mystic bridge of time That spans this mortal life, Above the tumult and the din, Heard o'er the cries of strife, Ay, down the corridors of years Will echo loud-long, The ringing golden harmonies Of Alma Matei s song. 13 high EUGENE OAKES. Q.E:,.QMw 1 'E .E E E E :L .E E 5 w .E fa 2 Q.. J: l- Class History As the curtain opens the archaeologist is working alone in the laboratory. An asistant calls the archaeologist by television. He walks to a screen where a moving picture is shown. Archaeologist: Hello . lst Assistant fvoice coming from screenj: Hello, chief, wc've just uncovered a large huilding of some sort. I helieve it was a school at one time. Arch.: That's very interesting. What kind of a school was it? lst Asst.: I think it was one of their so-called high schools. It was named HUTCHINSON-CENTRAL. Arch.: No! Whyf, that was one of the best sehools of the Twentieth Century. Many famous people went there to school, If you find any specimens around before I come down to look it over, send them up. lst Asst.: Yes, sir. There are some on the way up now. Arch.: All right, is that all? 1st Asst.: Yes, sirf' fPicture disappcarsj Arch. walks over to desk and a knock is heard on the door. Arch.: Come in. Enter another assistant carrying numerous books, pads, pins, rulers, and other school supplies. He places them on a table. ' Znd Asst.: Good morning. Arch.: Good morning. Let's see what we've got here. fPicks up a hook and studies it., 2nd Asst.: We found lots of stuff in that old school: it's still in pretty good shape considering that it was huilt way hack in 1914. It's just filled with such things, whatever they are. flndicates a bookj Arch.: This fholds out a hook, is one of those things they called textbooks, years ago. They used to study their lessons from them---sometimes. Asst.: You don't mean to say they studied those odd things? Arch.: Well, they were supposed to. You see our modern method of studying hy means of television wasn't used until the twenty-first century. fPicks up another hook and opens the cover. Several papers slip to the floor., Well, what's this? fStoops and picks them up Q Theres writing all over them in the old fashioned long' hand, hut it's so faint I can hardly read it. fReads aloud., The History of the Clam of l931. The class of 1931 began its history in September, 1927, when an unorganized and unacquainted group of green freshmen entered the doors of Hutchinson-Central for the first time. This began one ,of the most interesting and profitable periods of their lives. At nrst it took all their brains to figure out the hell system. However, this unpromising group developed into an organized class which brought many honors to 'Hutchinson in all fields of activities: athletics, scholarship and leadership. This bewildered group of freshmen soon learned, with the aid of the upper' classmen, that they didn't amount to much. After they had become accustomed to the running of the school, they began to take an interest in its activities. They sup' ported them and so very soon they had acquired that fine school spirit characteristic of all Hutchinsonians. Before they realized it, however, a terrific cyclone struck them, which stunned all and seriously hurt many, but thc majority passed through the Midyear storm unhurt. 15 ln the sophomore year they became noticeably activewhroughout the school. Some turned their efforts toward athletics, some toward dramhtics, others to work on the CALENDAR and HUTCH-INfSUN while still others chose to distinguish them- selves in scholarship. 'Ain the third year of their life at Hutchinson they helped lto make the celebration of the Seventy-Fifth Anniversary of the founding of Central High School a great success, especially the historical pageant in which many took mart. In the spring of the same year they organized themselves into a class. Thai oiiicers chosen were: Rohert Wright, President, Philomena Perno, VieefPresidentglLucy Pecararo, Secre' taryg Abraham Blinkoff, Treasurerg Goldie Knos, Girl Marshal and Robert McCoy, Boy Marshal. Under the guidance of these capable leaders ,Iuriior Day was a success. In September, 1930, when this claw returned to school, ithey found themselves the leaders of almost all the activities of the school program. Under the burden of their responsibility they pitched into their work with all the vilgor that they possessed. An important date in the annals of the class was when the sonior organization came to pass. Stephen Lavin was elected Presidentg other oilicers were Mary Boland, Vice' Presidentg Philomena Perno, Secretary: Abraham Blinkotf, Trasurerg Hannah Leroy, Girl Marshalg Bernice Cohen, Prophetg Eugene Oakes, LiPoet1 Kenneth Lane, Historian and Carmella Corritore, Valedietorian. At last cane the culmination of four years of toil and labor--graduation, where each received his reward for what he had successfully accomplished--a piece of paper tied with a ribbon. Asst.: I thought that they would be rather old fashioned and crude, but I guess things don't change much in time, for they seem to have felt much the same toward their schools as we do now. Arch.: It does seem strange to divide students into classes like freshmen and sophomores, Asst.: I can't explain the reference to ringing hells. Perliaps we could get hold of some information by doing more research. Arch.: Let's go and see the site of this interesting old building, Mayhe we'll and something about their system which will give us some ids as. They must have lcft other things behind besides this short account. i ly KENNETH LANE. A-24Q'4g!i'f'.Q1 fsstfzsff l 6 l 5.2 u h 1:5 G, Ev: CL.. 'c 3.2 .55 'QLE E. mi yu-I E.: N? R5 -ga: E.. L: rs E Z .c u: u J: I-' Vaiedictory The four years that we have spent at Hutchinson, fellow classmates, are crystal' li:,cd, tonight, in a single moment of goodebye, a blending of exaltation and poignant regret. Our hearts quicken at the memory of the golden heritage handed down to us through Alma Mater. We can look at the past and see things in their true perspective. Now, we can only smile at the memory of that first year of adjustment, when, pain' fully conscious of our inexperiencc, we were so eager for the gifts Alma Mater had in store for us. How we worked and how we played through the next year! What a glorious sense of achievement we experienced during our seventy-fifth anniversary! And, now, to-night, as we sit together, in hushed thoughtfulness, one idea dominates our minds-- Carry on. Even as the ancient Greeks, in their torch races, strove to keep the sacred flame alight, so must we carry with us and keep ever burning the torch of our Alma Mater. If we keep it high above, and ever before us, the shadows will fall behind, We have spent four of the happiest years of our lives under the guidance of that light. It burned hrilliauitly through our victories and shone stead- fastly, tenderly, through our defeats. It glowed with a warmth and mellowncss through our friendships and blazed the way to new and fascinating worlds of thought. Tonight, fellow classmates, a bit of that light has penetrated into each of our hearts. If we tend it faithfully, it will always illuminate the present and burn away the mist of the future, preserving for tomorrow, yesterday. ' You, Mr, Thomas, and, you also, members of the faculty, have been the high priests of that sacred flame. Patiently, steadfastly, you have kept it alive and have interpreted its meaning to us. Honor, Courage, Loyalty, Service. How those words ring in our hearts! With what loving affection we shall remember the teachers of these lessons! We, who have had the privilege of your friendship shall carry away with us the beauty that lives in the memory and becomes the very stuff of which our souls are made. OUR ALMA MATER 'Thou Spirit of a mighty heritage Let thy golden memories ,Be ozw inspiration In this ever clmnging trend From tlic old order to the new! , CARMELLA Coiuu-roms. President's Address Class Day is a time'honored institution at Hutchinson. Today the class of 1931 has the happy privilege of welcoming teachers, parents, friends and schoolmates to the exercises. Graduation is not far off. We know that means staring life on our own responsi- bility, and we realize that many obstacles are before us, but we are confident that the lessons learned in this, our beloved school, will help us to solve some of life's problems. As we enter the active life as citizens of the Hnest country in the world, the services we render should be fraught with earnest effort and willingness to give the best that is in us to the furthering of the highest ideals of citizenship. As citizens it will be our privilege, not only to promote and cherish our American institutions, but also to obey the established government. 45 ,F - The time for leaving draws near. Now the words of our school song take on a deep and profouncl meaning: She calls for our allegiance To 'noble aims and fair, And in our souls we wear her seals- - All life shall find it there. Charge to the Juniors Today the Class of 1931 pauses to perform one last service for our Alina Mater hcforc we leave for fresh woods and pastures new. To you-W-seniors of tomorrowf we entrust our school and the ideals it has fostered during sevcntyfseven years of service to the citizens of Buffalo. It has heen our privilege to carry the banner of leadership during this, our last year. and we are proud to traiisfer our trust to you. Our high school life has been pleasant and protitahle and, with a tang of sadness, we end this part of our career, 1 You, as seniors, will assume new responsibilities. Greater fields for service will he yours and opportunities to excel in scholarship and athletics will present themselves. Behind you lie three quarters of a century of tiinefhonored traditions. By heing trustworthy and loyal you can further these ideals. We sincerely hope that every undertaking you attempt will he successful and that you may next year feel as we do today, assured that Centrals spirit shall live on in her Class of 1932. Response We assume the duties which you have performed so well. This obligation will be ours as the Class of 1932, to keep the faith which you intrust to us. lt is with the feeling that one has when one's older brother leaves the household to seek his way through the world, that we now see you preparing to leave tliis school, where you achieved so much and where you have won many honors and where you have spent so many happy hours. '1 President's Address Today wc the juniors of 19'1, arc ctlebrating an cvt . : that we will always . , .- - r . - wt fondly cherish and one that we will remember as one of thc ldutstanding days in our high school life. We are looked upon with admiration and held in esteem by the lowerclassrneu, and we know we have the best wishes of the upp erclassmen. It has always been the privilege of the juniors to conduct the Arbor Day pro' grain. This observance of Arbor Day has hccn manifested in an increasing desire to know and understand Nature. We all partake of the joys and pleasures which trees and flowers afford us, hut we are sometimes apt to forget tlizit we have a duty to perform for these pleasure-givers. These friends of ours need care and protection. As our knowledge of them deepens and grows, we become nliorc conscious of their ncetls, and with this increased consciousness our appreciation will he intensified and marked with a greater degree of attention. Theres beauty all around our paths If but our watchful eyes Can trace it midst familiar things And through their lowly guise. Let us observe Arbor Dayg let us plant trees and protect upon each Arbor Day, with its message of spring and returnin them, Let us resolve life, to give Nature S its chance in all its forms: to know the things that are about us in the woods and in the ficlds, in the streams and lakes and on thc mountains and thi knowledge and usefulness but increase our joy of living. May the significance of this awakening, coupled with the plea is not only widen our ant memories of this Arbor Day signifies the awakening of Nature and the gloriclus presence of spring. i junior Day, serve as an incentive to the more serious, the great vcar. :r tasks in our Senior ALBERT D. The tirst dance ol' the year was held on Halloween and was for the seniors only. The next one, given for the juniors, was held on St. Patricks Day. This committee, under the direetorship of Miss Penny, also made arrangements for the junior Day Dance, as well as the Senior Class Dance. All of these entertainments proved successful, heeause of the cooperation of the faculty and students who attended, Commerce Club The Commerce Clula, this year, started its activities with its annual Initiation Party. At this party a large group of boys and girls were initiated into the club to carry on the work of the graduating seniors, The initiation of the new members afforded much enjoyment for the older niemhers. Regular meetings were held each month. At the second meeting of the year, Miss Olive Taylor gave a fascinating talk on a trip that she had taken through the Panama Canal. At the Fehruary meeting, Hamilton jones gave an illustrated lecture on New York City, Dean Marsh, of the Evening Session of the University of Buffalo, also gave a convincing talk on Why You Should Attend the University of Buffalo. A dance, which was attended and enjoyed by a very large number, of students, was held in April. The annual picnic is to he held soon, On this occasion, the new ofiicers will be installed. PFCSS With a membership of more than thirty in 1931, the Press Club, honorary journ' alistic society, has had an unusually successful year, Any student who has had sev- enty-live column inches of material printed in the SUN automatically becomes a mem' her. The club handles publicity for school events. At the lirst meeting of the Press Club in October at the home of Dorothy VanDer' muelcn, the oliicers were elected. These students have assembled faithfully every other week through the year in a successful attempt to accomplish the club's purpose of making something beautiful. Their gardens this year should show the result. . The aim of the club. at present, is to heeome a part of a widcfspread movement for beautifying America by joining the National Garden Club. The membership is open to anyone who is interested in flowers or gardening. 77 Federation of Modern Language Because the modern language groups have much in com: Modern Language Clubs was formed for the purpose of aiding ways as possible, The first meeting of the combined clubs was l French, Italian, Spanish and Gennan. were to be members. The number of members is more than 30, many of whom are enjoying their third and fourth years in the organization. Mr. Cardenas, the adviser, has done much to promote its activity and to aid in its growth. Many of the members have engaged in foreign correspondence with students of Spain and the South American countries, and the letters received are both entertaining and educational. In November members of the other language clubs were invited to be the guests of the Spanish Club and were entertained with views of Mexico, taken by Miss Zicmann. Early in December the members were shown how to dance the jota. The instructor, Paulino San Martin, also demonstrated several other types of Spanish dances. Literary Society At the first meeting of the Literary Society of Hutchinson-Central High School in October, 1930, the following officers were elected for the first term: president, Frank Hanavang vicefpresident, Aline Lankler, secretary, Margaret Sauerg treasurer, Robert McCoy. Officers for the second term were elected at the February meeting at the home of Marjorie Martin. Initiation of new members was held in March at the home of Miss Taylor, the adviser, The school year for thc club closed with a picnic for active and pasive members, Chess Club If anyone doubts that the Hutch Chess Club which set out three years ago to arouse enthusiasm for the ancient game of the Arabs has not accomplished its object, only one look in 260 any Friday will convince him to the contrary. This club which started with but a handful of regular members has now increased its membership to 26. Eligibility for the Chess Team which engages in matches with other Buffalo high schools, was determined by a tournament conducted early in the year. Members of this team are: Abraham Blinkoif, Hyman Markel, Nathan David, Cecil Pearl, Isaac Groner, Irving Yosovitz, Herbert Morgenroth and Samuel Groner. The team succew' fully defeated Bennett on December '13 by the score of 7-4, Burgard on February 6 by 5-4, East on the 'l7th of February by 04, and defeated Lafayette on March 19 to the tune of Sheik. These victoria make Hutchinson an outstanding contender for the city high school chess championship. The faculty adviser, Mr. Gartinkel, himself one of the strongest players in the city, has been of invaluable assistance with his expert advice. 79 X :gk N. The Glee Club The Glec Club, nnder thc able leadership of Miss Ormond, has performed its bit in sustaining the high standard of our musical organizations, Those programs in which it has participated have been acclaimed excellent. Members of the Glee Club took part in the Thanksgiving and Christmas programs, and were prominent in the school opcretta, All At Sea . Without doubt, the Glee Club has accomplished much, and deserves considerable merit, The Band , This year the Band has been under the direction of Mr. Norman Vcster. There arc about twentyfiive members. representing all thc sections. Edward Aldred was elected president at an early meeting. The Band has given several assembly programs this year besides playing for the football games and the HutchinsonfMasten Alumni basketball game, junior Day and Senior Class Day wcrc made more successful by the presence of the Band. The Orchestra The members of the Orchestra chose Carlyle Smith president and Henry D'Ainlco secretary this year. There are several interesting additions this year, owing to the fact that the school has a fine new set of tympani and an excellent xylophone. The Orchestra has played for many of the ascmbly programs, making them more colorful. This year the Qrchestra assisted the Chromatic Club in its annual concert at our school. The Operetta, All At Sea , which was such a success, was well supported by the Orchestra in a very delightful accompaniment. A Dramatics From the classes in Dramatics have come several one'act plays which have given opportunity to prospective actors and real enjoyment to the students. At the session of Public Speaking and Dramatics sections of the New York State Teachers Couvcnf tion in November one class produced Lord Dunsany's The Golden Doom to inter' ested teachers from all over the state. There was an interesting diversion from the customary Christmas spirit play in a realistic little play called A Modehi Viking . wherein we watched a dramatic interlude on the dcck of a holiday cruiser. At the same performances The Four Little Women from Louise McOlcott's novel of that name, presented the charming scene surrounding Jo's idea that 'iChristmas might be Christmas without presents. At the request of the HUTCHIIN-SUN Statf another clam presented Lady Grcgorys rollicking farce early in the new term. tAt an assembly program sponsored by the Girls Council the entire student groupiffollowed Georges plight in The Ghost Story by Booth Tarkington. Asia fitting conclusion to this term's activities the junior members of the Drama classes gave Stuart Walker's beautiful fantasy, The Trimnpletf' Early in May, the Music Department, with the co-operation of the English Department, prcscntcd a revival of All At Sea , a Gilbert and Sullivan dream. Many former graduates returned to enjoy themselves watching old roles re-acted and hearing familiar songs refsung. The final performance was a gala one, with the auditorium crowded to the doors. As the procccds went to sponsor athletics and scholastic activi- ties, the net receiptstproved a welcome addition to the school treasury fund, But the most gratifying return was the revival of interest in the annual school production. Cross-Country , H Hutchinson again returned to athletic glory this year, when an undefeated cross country team won the Columhia cup, emblematic of the Buffalo Puhlie high school championship. From the good material availahle from last year Coach john Garner, Hutch alumnus and star of a national championship team, produced the most powerful team Hutchinson has known for several years. The team opened the season hy defeating Technical by a perfect score, 15 to 49. Next to bow in defeat was East High's strong team, highly rated as potential winners. The score was close, 24 to 31. ln the third and last dual meet of the series, with only one lctterman running, we decisive' ly heat Lafayette, I9 to 49. Then, to climax an already hrilliant season, this great team won the classic Columhia cup TIICC, heating the closest competitor, Masteii, hy 7 points. The winning of the cup was a fitting close: to the great achievements of a great team. All credit and praise is due to Mr. Garner, for his coaching of the team, and to every runner for his faithful, hard work and eifort, hnally crowned hy victory. There will hc only two memhers of this cup-winning team lost to the school for next year, and with several squadmen showing good form Hutchinson has a good chance to repeat the triumph of l930. Cantain Alex Slepian, Aldrich Vxfonnacott, James Mastrantoniq, Joseph Iamarino, and joseph Santa Maria were Hutcliinsoifs point scorers in the Columhia cup racc. Basketball With no lettermcn back to form the nucleus of the Hutch team, Coach Glun: started the hard task of picking a good teain from a squad of green men. Huchinson inaugurated the haskethall season with successive victories over East, Riverside and Bennett therehy tieing with Fosdick and Lafayette, who defeated Hutch in hotly contested games. These defeats were followed hy losses at the hands of Technical and South Park. In the second round of the Yale Cup series Hutchinson's fighting Brownies struggled against the overwhelming odds, the experienced teams of the league, The teams that defeated Hutch were Fosdick, Lafayette, Riverside, South Park, and Technical, hut Hutch in turn defeated East and Bennett. The end of the season found Hutchinson in fifth place. Hockey This ycar's Hockey team was the best that has worn the Brown and Blue for the past decade. With all hut one of last year's veterans hack, the boys, under Mr. Moody, showed Hne form. In the cup games, Hutchinson defeated Bennett, Technical and South Park hy the scores 2-1, 'l-0, and 'l-1. The only defeat of the year was suffered at the hands of East, the Orientals winning 1-0. Hutch carrie in second in the Michigan Cup race, with 6 points, while East won the cup on a one point margin. The Brownie scorers were Henry C. Nix, with two goals to his crcditg Captain Boh Doran, who also netted the puck twice, Carlyle Smith and Leslie Francis, who scored once each. Graduation will take an unusually heavy toll. Nix and Smith will leave the wing berths vacant, while Ken Lane and Francis will leave the defense posts. Steve Lavin who proved to he one of thc hest goalies in the cup race will also leave. Witli Paul Huher to fill in at goal, however, and Oliver Collins and Nick Pro' venzo at the wings: and Albert Owens, john jerman, and Dan Aheles fighting it out for defenseg while Doran carries on at centerg the prospects for next year are good. SIGMUND Aiwwirz. Tennis Mr. Gunz's call for candidates as answered hy 30 boys, five of them lettermen from last year's team. The hoys are practicing diligently at the Front and in the cage hack of the school in preparation for the coming matches. The chances for the cup look bright this year with five veterans- Simonsen, Tuttnn, Provcnzo, Lcisinger, and Federick-hack as the nucleus of the team. The remainder of the squad is shaping up well and will aid the veterans in providing stiff opposition for our sister schools. Taking all these factors into consideration, Hutchinson should Hnish well up in the standings at the end of the season. Here's to thc success of Mr. Glunz., capable coach, and his team! 105 X Golf The year 1930 was the second time a golf team represente Hutchinson. About ten boys tried out for the team, eight of whom represented H tehinson at Meadow' brook, where the high school tournament was played. These ys were selected ac' eording to the lowest scores made in the trials played at th Delaware Park and Grover Cleveland courses. Although the boys tried hard theyij didn't finish on top. These boys won their letters at the meet: Robert McCoy, Raliwh Gaynor, Henry C. Nix, Jr., and Kenneh Gerhardt. Ralph Gaynor, who had the lowest Hutchinson score at the meet, will be back next year to help the inexperienced players. KENNETH Geananor. Baseball The new coach, Mr. Muto, was greeted by 100 candidates, after Mr. Kalbfleisch introduced him on April 3. After several weeks of experimentation hy subtraction and addition, the squad was diminished to its present number od '19, ' When the squad had been chosen, the coach started right into hard work. Dilif gently and faithfully the boysreported for practice during the Erlster vacation. When questioned hy an enthusiastic spectator about the prospects of the team, Mr. Muto replied, We will have one of the fastest and wittiest teams i1n the league. If the boys keep up the spirit they have shown for the past week, they will be serious con' tenders for the Cornell cup. As a matter of fact, I think Hutchinson will finish among the first three. Now, there's Woodrow Wantuck. See him burning them in. Well, he'll he our first string pitcher. Then there's johnny McGroder. For receivers we will have Thomas Serio, young Hercules from 179, and Raymond MeGroder will offer what assistance he can. In the infield, continued Mr. Muto, I will probably have Carl Dentieo on Grst. Carl is a good hitter and a good first baseman. On second base I will have either Rocco Mecca or Paddy Traina. Both are Fighting hard for the position. Then on short-stop I have one of the fastest boys, Dpn Varatta. He's all over the field. And in the hatfbox or on third base I have Phil - rriglano, one of the best players that ever put on a mitt. He is cool and cautious, a d does not easily lose his head. In centerfiield l'll have Leonard Forti chasing those h' h flys. Leonard is a heavy hitter and fleet of foot. He sure knows his business. In rrghtffield either Frank Sedita or Kazaros will play. And in left Held, Bob Doran or Nicholas Sater will play. Here are the facts as the coach gave them. A trophy was awarded to the Seminary E team for winning the largest numher of games. Later Mis Larson and Miss Hinaman, the coaches, chose the best players to form the Major Teams, the Brown and Blue. The Brown was victorious in the two games played. On january 13 each of the girls who had come out for the sport attended a cap' tainball party given in the Seminary Annex gymnasium. After a Grand March games were played. Later refreshments were served followed by dancing. Girls Volley Ball The freshman girls' volleyball season that started at the beginning of the second term, ended with the same splendid spirit. This is proved hy the great interest and zeal with which the 100 girls who reported, entered into thc games. After Eve weeks of practice, six teams were chosen. Each was made up of twelve players. The teams were Seminary A, B, C, Dg Franklin Ag Main Building A. The Round Robin series ended with Hve straight victories for Seminary B5 four of the live for Frankling three of the tive for the Main Building and one each for teams A, C and D. These series having concluded, the best players from the entire group were chosen and formed into two major teams the Brown and the Blue. There were two hard fought battles between them, but the Brown team came in with flying colors in both games. The girls who enter the Freshman sports with such enthusiasm as they did this year usually take an active part in sports as long as they remain in high school. JEANETTE DEKoFF, Seminary Annex. Captainball FRANKLIN ANNEX The freshman girls who participated in the games of captainball brought their games to a close in February. Nine teams were formed early in November, two from Franklin Annex, two from the Main Building, and iive from Seminary Annex. The games which were played resulted in Seminary E's victory. The struggle for championship, resulted in the forming of Major teams which were called the Brown team and the Blue team, both consisting of the best players. Great thanks are due to Miss Larson and Miss Hinnamin, who coached these girls in the Seminary gymnasium. Each and every girl thanks her instructor for their unceasing effort and patient work.
