It tells, by words and pictures, the story of people at work and play all of whom have a common goal that of preparing for life as it is found beyond these walls. Here talents are developed and character formed. The yearbook provides a glimpse, incomplete and imperfect, of life as it was lived this year by the members of the Husson family . No pen, nor camera, can provide the total picture which includes our hearts and emotions. For many years, almost from the beginning, I have referred to our student. body and faculty as the Husson family, I sense something of a warmness, a nearness to one another, that transcends the classroom. Over and above all else is a spirit that binds us together much like that of the family where love, affection, and respect are mutual bonds. We belong. Our college is our home. True it is that we act as a. family when our hearts become involved. I have had occasion many, many times over the years to witness the fam- ily in action when one of its members faltered on the trail. This year our family showed its heart when Roger Furbish of the senior class left for a Boston hospital and surgery. Everybody Uchipped in to bring some measure of ease and comfort to his confinement. I, too, have had a similar experience. When I add my christmas and birthday remembrances, and other numerous manifestations of the good spirit that governs and guides us, then no other name can describe it so aptly as fafnily. A great wall of pride rises in me to be a member-to belong to the Husson family. It was my good fortune to address the Freshman class before leaving for Florida. It was the only speech on my calendar for the year, and it was a thrilling experience to return to the speaker's stand. I thank this segment of the Husson family for the invitation that was given me to appear before it, and to say that I was highly pleased by the warmth and cour- tesy that greeted my effort. I hope that the future will provide an increasing number of these opportunities to share my thinking with you. My compliments are recorded here and now to the men and women who participated in group activities. The records show excellence of achievement, and, in the area of men's basketball, scintillating brilliance. It is good on occasion, to reach the top of the hill and en- joy the rich view from there. Strong winds, in time, may dislodge us but the enjoyment of victory and achievement is upon us now. Relish it. As you pour over the pages of this edition of the Chieftain, I hope that you will find somewhere in it those things that were important to you, those things that you will enjoy recapturing upon a' return some years from now to these very pages. May the memories be pleasant. Your task . . . To Build a Better World, God said. I answered, How? This is such a large vast place, so complicated now, And I so small and useless am, there's nothing I can do. But God in all his wisdom said, Just buil'd a better you! n 5 4 4 W The Editorial Staff of the CHIEFTAIN respectfully dedicates this 1961 issue to MISS PRISCILLA ALTHEA CLARK in appreciation of her outstanding contributions to Husson College, both as an instructor and administrator. We feel that she deserves much praise for her efficient handling of the Husson Family's purse strings. She also has the under- standing and willingness to assist any member of the student body with their personal problems. In the future we are looking forward to the same quali- ties of wisdom and leadership while she serves as Executive Director in addition to her duties as Treasurer. Needless to say, the Husson Family is proud to have Miss Clark as one of its many members. 'A , 9 A 120 ' lei' l 'iifxfq gay, I x Sw MISS PRISCILLA ALTHEA CLARK av' at .f A college yearbook has many meanings for all people. For a great many people a yearbook carries with it memories and sentiments relating to college life through the many memorable pictures. These pictures show in vivid example all the happiness and often the success of the activities of the year. As publishers of the 1961 issue of the CHIEFTAIN, the Student Education Association of Husson College has attempted to con- struct the -CHIEFTAIN in such a manner that it will carry the meaning of these virtues to all students. A good yearbook which relates a full year of school life in picture form requires many hours of hard work and efficient planning. This year, our yearbook contains many changes which we hope will be for the best. The CHIEFFAIN staff as a whole deserves many thanks for their cooperative effort in the production of this yearbook. However, special thanks go to Karl B. McGaw for his many fine contributions, as well as the hours he has spent checking and compiling data for this edition. The business manager's job on a yearbook is no small matter. We thank Dolores Renaud for her efficient and exacting performance in this posi- tion. The Chieftain staff as a whole thank Mr. Parker for his sincere in- terest and supervision throughout the process of preparing the 1961 CHIEFTAIN for publication. We have purchased new fans for Dickerman Lounge, helped to present blazers to the basketball team, and even put parking tickets on your cars. Christmas was made much nicer for several families in the Bangor area. We presented baskets of food pertinent to the Christmas dinner. Roger Furbish's illness will be shortened we hope due to the portable TV presented to him by the organizations of the school. The annual Chief for a Day program was held with all the gaiety of supporting one's candidate to the end. Joe Paul and Marjorie Cummings were the victorious couple. The Banquet was held at Pilots Grill this year and turned out to be a great success and a lot of fun. Much thanks and appreciation should be extended to Mr. Tyler, Mrs. Lowe, and Mrs. Saba. Due to their understanding, patience, and durability , the student council has com- pleted another successful year. Thanks is to be extended also to the student body for your fine support. ov 2f .Q .11 .ff 9.4 1 1-fn' 0 Ky Q. Patricia Bailey Priscilla Bouchard S.E.A. this year has worked very hard to put out a yearbook that we hope everyone will enjoy. This has been our main project. Other projects were: giving gifts to the chidren at the Bangor Children's Home and sending out advertisements to promote the sale of two excellent books about Maine written by a local author who has been hospitalized for some time. We have had a very busy year, but a fruitful one. Several of our Officers went to Boston to the annual convention of N.E.P.T.A. in October, others attended conventions in Augusta. A party and the presenting of the yearbooks and the dedication will climax the year's ac- tivities. Emma Glad Although the Drama -Club of Husson College began late in the season, it has progressed rapidly under the direction, first of, Mr. Richard Lail of Dow Air Force Base and later under Mr. John Parakis, who has recently joined the faculty. At the first meeting the following officers were elected, Alan Brown of Presque Isle as president, James Murphy of Caribou as vice-president, Shila Ouillette also of Caribou as secretary and June lessard from Bath as treasurer. The Drama Club is now very busy in the production of a two-act play entitled, The Red Lamp, to be given in a student assembly in April. In March a, campaign was begun to interest more students in Dra- matics as a school activity, and to show them how much fun it could be to participate in this school activity. The members are, Beverly Morway, Fairfieldg Nancy Mason, Bath 5 Liz Smith, Bathg Elizabeth Smith, Lubecg Terry Weymouth, Skowhegan: Glen Cottman, Delaware: Shila Johnson, Bangor: Patricia Foster, Bangorg Neila McIntyre, Dexterg Catherine Wyman, Lubec. Kappa :Ma na The brothers of Kappa Delta Phi, Lambda Chapter, have been very active during the school year. Twenty three new pledges were initiated into the fraternity in early fall and twelve others were initiated this spring. The membership has more than doubled itself during the year as a result of the new brothers. Last fall, Kappa Delta Phi held a Rummage Sale, for the purpose of increasing its funds, which proved to be very successful. The fraternity also held a County Fair, which offered many and varied games of chance for the would be gambler, in the Hus- son College Gym. The fair ran for three days and was one of the first activities to be held on a weekend in several years. All the brothers- worked in the concessions and really helped to make the fair a success. During the basketball season the fraternity ran the concession stand at the basketball games and sold and collected tickets. Onother Rummage Sale was held this spring in downtown Bangor and also proved a success. The weekend of April 14 and 15, the fraternity attended the 56th Annual National Convention, held in Portland, Maine this year. All the brothers who attended, departed for Portland on Friday afternoon April 1.4th. In the past, Lambda Chapter of Kappa Delta Phi has won the Presidents Cup at the annual convention. This cup is awarded to the Chapter who has the most members in attendance at the convention. At the time of this writing, the brothers of Kappa Delta Phi are planning the retention of this cup. The Officers of Kappa Delta Phi this year were: Ronald Willitte, President, Rob- ert Gilby, Vice-President: Donald Paul, Secretary, Wayne Smith, Chapling Alvin Trask, Treasurer, Richard Southard, Student Council Representative 5 and Ronald Mc- Reavy, Historian. Thirty-five candidates were given the opportunity to become better acquainted with the active members of Mu Sigma Chi and to learn about the organization. During the last week in November the thirty-five candidates were initiated into the fraternity. On December 14, 1960 Mu Sigma had its annual Christmas Ball. The hall was attrac- tively decorated with evergreens and colored streamers-. A large, beautifully ornamented Christmas tree in the center of the hall reflected the spirit of Christmas. Louis Abbotoni, Waldoboro, Maine The ministrel show in April was a huge success once again. The members with the help of some outsiders worked very hard to make this show one of the outstanding events at Hus- son this year. Miss Bernice Ross was chosen Sweetheart this year. The year came to a close with plans being made for the annual fraternity trip to Quebec a reward to all the members who offered so much of their time to the year's activity. For Mr. Cohen it was his first year as faculty adviser to Mu Sigma Chi and he did an outstanding job. We hope he enjoyed- being with the fraternity as much as we enjoyed hav- ing him as our adviser. Last year, due to added responsibilities, Mr. Husson, Jr. had to give up being our adviser, but he is so attached to the fraternity that every chance he gets he attends the meetings. We certainly appreciate his interest in us. Delta Chapter of Pi Rho Zeta interna- tional by national headquarters for having the largest number of pledgees during the school year 1960-1961. Starting the school year with a total membership of 8 members, our mem- bership soon grew to 50 members. Sighs of relief were heard after the informal and formal initiations. A good time was enjoyed by all, and a bright future was anticipated by all' members of Delta Sigma Delta. Wednesday of each week, the girls were easily recognized by the wearing of their new sorority outfits, which consisted of a black skirt and white blouse. The Boston trip was exciting and enjoyed by- everyone. The annual sorority show, 'iThe Roaring Twenties, sponsored by both SOY01'ltl6S was again a great success. The Charleston number caught the fancy of the audience and brought back many pleasant memories. The Easter Bunny, accompanied by sorority members, visited the Bangor Children's Home. Baskets of candy, toys, and Easter eggs were left behind, as were many happy heartsa.A toy drive conducted for another local orphanage proved to be equally successful and rewar mg. Delta Sigma Delta Sorority wishes to thank Miss Swan, Miss Bradford, and Epsilon Tau Epsilon Sorority for their help throughout the year. To Miss Jordan, we sincerely wish to express our thanks. She has done much to make our sorority outstanding at Husson College. Her patience and understanding have enabled us to carry through to a successful ending any venture we have undertaken. ...,4, . - , .,.. ...n t 5 , - -f ,-A - A -'H H1 NZB. Seats were reserved for the pledgees who were dressed in costume such as a devil, cat, Charlie Weaver, etc. All pledgees were equipped with their cow bells, banners, and noise makers. These girls were good substitutes while the cheerleaders had a break! They did a line job of cheering the Indians on to victory. One of the high lights of the year was the Boston Trip. Twenty-one members from ETE and Delta Sigma chartered a bus and headed for Boston February 17. The group attended the Ice Follies. The rest of the time was free to be used as they wished. The girls visited such places as Durgin Park, Prince Spaghetti House, and Brigha.m's Ice Cream Store. Many of the girls spent their time shopping - mainly for shoes, while others had their hair styled. Tired, but happy, they arrived home Sunday evening the 19th. The Sorority Show, The Roaring Twen ties was a big success in spite of the weath- er. The chorus sang many of the songs that were popular in the '20's such as My Blue Heaven , Yes, We Have no Bananas Today , and Side by Side . Among the spe cialty acts were: a solo by Ann Mills: a dance by Bernadette Marting Trumpet solo by Stevie Robbinsg solo, by Mudge Cummings, dance by Pat Carney, Chorus line by Wayne Smith, Jim McKay, Andy Caswell, Leo Loi selle, Phil Infiorati, and Don Vachon, and of course the Charleston by Jane Craig, Patty Hunter, Sharon Bell and Mary Ann Ha- chey. The show closed with the chorus singing Broadway Melody. All reports from the show were Excellent! The Family Night Banquet was held March 31 at Pilots Grill. The girls invited their parents and friends as their guestsz The guest speaker was Mrs. Grace Gilmore who read a very interesting one-act play. Everyone had a grand time! The publishing of the Ledger is the major project of the sorority. The editor, Mudge Cummings, with the co-operation of the entire Ledger staff publish four edi- tions a year.
