' si X fc- SQ - N HeasElep T To all of us, at one time or another, there comes an important day in our lives a day that we like to remember as long as we live Just such a day was September 3 19 7, when 82 eager young people, feeling very excited and important, entered the classrooms of Hur ricane High as freshmen The class was divided into two sections with Mrs Roach spon sorlng section I and Mr Louke section II Elected as class lead ers were the following people president, Richard Hanklns, vice president, Mary Ellis, secretary and treasurer, Betty Smith stu dent council representative, Hermetta Mitchell historian, George Erwin The class colors were blue and gold and the class flower was the marigold The class took every opportunity to participate in school activ ities There were 3 members on the football team and 6 on the junior high basketball team Three members of the class plaved in the band, and Alice Conner, Joe Ann Shinn, and Phyllis Joyce served as majorettes Laura Neely did well as a cheerleader Another member, Marv Ellis, distinguished herself by winning the local Knights of Pythias public oration contest The class was also very active in the various clubs and their work Sixteen musical souls were in the glee club and 16 boys were members of the F F A , of which George Erwin was elected chaplain 471-441- Trying to act like grown up and succeeding slowly in our ef forts, we passed safely to our sophomore year. The enrollment dropped to 78 for that year, and a very happy year it was. Again Mrs. Roach and Mr. Louke were our sponsors, and class officers were president, Franklin Meadows, secretary, Phyllis Joyce, student council representative, George Erwin: historian, Mary Ellis. The red rose was chosen as class flower, and the class colors were scarlet and gray. We selected as class motto, NA winner never quits, and a quitter never wins . This year the class was pround to have more of its members take part in the different activities. There were lO boys on the foot ball team and Quentin Kennedy was manager. Four were on the basket- ball team, S in the band, 3 majorettes, fJoe Ann Shinn, Alice Ann Conner, and Phyllis Joycej, and 3 cheerleaders, KCatherine Thornton, Palmanita Keeling, and Laura Neelvj, Ten boys were members of the F.F.A. Many of our class were ln the chorus and were active in other clubs. Catherine Thornton was Miss Redskin's attendant from the sophomore class. TH- N '1 The fall of ' 9 found us one step nearer to our goal as once more we came together in the halls of H H S Answering to the name of juniors were 7 ambitious specimens who re lly kept every one on his toes Combined class officers for that year were pres ident, Virgle Mynes, vice president, George Erwin, secretary, Josephine Escue, treasurer, Mary Ellis, historian, Richard Hank ins and Mary Ellis The white carnation was chosen as class flower and green and white as the colors The class had as its motto, Ulf God be for us, who then can be against us? This, too, was an eventful year Thirteen of our classmates carried the pigskln for the football team Kvirgle Mynes, Randall Burns, George Erwin, Jack Lovejoy, Frank Davis, Shirley Mynes, Charles May, Franklin Meadows, Donald Thompson, Lester Dent, Jack Meeks, Floyd Chapman, and Jack Rooperl, while 7 raced up and down the hardwoods for the basketball team CDonald Thompson, Franklin Meadows, Jack Lovejoy, Charles May, Jack Meeks, Frank Davis, and Charles Graham! Other classmates who took part in the extra curr icular activities included 8 members in chorus, 3 majorettes, CPhyllis Joyce, Joe Ann Shinn, and Alice Connerj, 2 cheerleaders fLaura Neely and Palmanita Keelingl 9 in National Thespian So clety S student council members and 3 band members CJack Davis, laura Neely, and Richard Hankinsl Eleven boys were members of the F F A of which Richard Hankins was president Margaret Burdette was Miss Redsk1n's attendant from the junior class Those taking part in the junior play, 'Gangway for Ghostsn, were Patricia Faulk ner, Franklin Meadows, Alice Conner, Charles Graham, Carol Rowsey, Mary Ellis, Imogene Miller, Bettv Smith, Richard Hankins, Jack Davis, George Erwin, and Norma Crouch Mrs Roach and lr Louke sponsored the play which was a great success The great event of the year was the banquet that we gave for the seniors on April 28 Using the theme, WUood Luckn, Vlrgle Mynes served as toast master 444434 As school convened the following autumn, 69 of us took our long awaited positions as seniors The top at last' We set about establishing ourselves in the usual routine of the school by elect ing combined class officers as follows President, Vlrgle Hynes, vice president, George Erwin, secretary, Laura Neely, treasurer, Franklin Meadows Mrs Roach and Mr Louke have continued as our sponsors and advisors and the class owes a good deal of its suc cess to these two who have been so helpful and understanding The class presented a play on November l? entitled, 'The Camp bells are Coming We were proud to have 12 lettermen in football and in basketball One young man, Ronald Guthrie, answered the call to duty and enlisted in the U S Navy A popular young lady, Phyllis Joyce was Miss Red Skin Another will known lass, Mary Ellis, won the title of Miss Putnam County at the Putnam County homecoming, September 10 Her loving cup now graces the office The future looks promising in fact, it looks so promis ing that 9 of our female members have taken a chance and have become engaged or have become married The blossom of youth has now almost burst into full bloom Our graded school and high school days will soon be just one long memory Often we turn back the pages on time We remember in cidents and people woven so closely in the pattern of the past that it is hard to determine what time in our lives, thus far, was most pleasant Now, as we come down to the end of our senior year and last year in school, we are reminded that 'One day a hush will fall, the footsteps of us all will echoe down the halls and disappearn And so it is with re ret and et a joy in our accomplishment, that 8 Y we bid farewell to those,who have been our companions and friends, as we go out to take our places in life 1+ 1+ - . in , - I I . It was given in the gym amid the bright colors of a rainbow setting ll. - ll .
