“ ' si X fc- SQ - N HeasElep T To all of us, at one time or another, there comes an important day in our lives a day that we like to remember as long as we live Just such a day was September 3 19 7, when 82 eager young people, feeling very excited and important, entered the classrooms of Hur ricane High as freshmen The class was divided into two sections with Mrs Roach spon sorlng section I and Mr Louke section II Elected as class lead ers were the following people president, Richard Hanklns, vice president, Mary Ellis, secretary and treasurer, Betty Smith stu dent council representative, Hermetta Mitchell historian, George Erwin The class colors were blue and gold and the class flower was the marigold The class took every opportunity to participate in school activ ities There were 3 members on the football team and 6 on the junior high basketball team Three members of the class plaved in the band, and Alice Conner, Joe Ann Shinn, and Phyllis Joyce served as majorettes Laura Neely did well as a cheerleader Another member, Marv Ellis, distinguished herself by winning the local Knights of Pythias public oration contest The class was also very active in the various clubs and their work Sixteen musical souls were in the glee club and 16 boys were members of the F F A , of which George Erwin was elected chaplain 471-441- Trying to act like grown up and succeeding slowly in our ef forts, we passed safely to our sophomore year. The enrollment dropped to 78 for that year, and a very happy year it was. Again Mrs. Roach and Mr. Louke were our sponsors, and class officers were president, Franklin Meadows, secretary, Phyllis Joyce, student council representative, George Erwin: historian, Mary Ellis. The red rose was chosen as class flower, and the class colors were scarlet and gray. We selected as class motto, NA winner never quits, and a quitter never wins . This year the class was pround to have more of its members take part in the different activities. There were lO boys on the foot ball team and Quentin Kennedy was manager. Four were on the basket- ball team, S in the band, 3 majorettes, fJoe Ann Shinn, Alice Ann Conner, and Phyllis Joycej, and 3 cheerleaders, KCatherine Thornton, Palmanita Keeling, and Laura Neelvj, Ten boys were members of the F.F.A. Many of our class were ln the chorus and were active in other clubs. Catherine Thornton was Miss Redskin's attendant from the sophomore class.
