“The office in 1923 was an open place on the floor level about where the outer off1ce now stanis In the basement there was a home economics kitchen, laboratory fwhere room 2 is nowj, an engine roomfthe building was then heated with a gas furnace which was later removedf, and restrooms The library was in what is now room lO and the typing room in what is now room 9 Many plays were given during the early school years Among e productions presented were Deacon Dubbsu, HA Little Clodhopper an N ay Down East' Plays were given in the old tobacco ware house Practicing was done at night in the homes The group took one play to Winfield and presented it in the courthouse The proceeds from these plays were used to buy a piano and to equip fully the baseball team The first school paper entitled nThe Spectatorn was published in 1923 The first school bus was run in 1927 with Herbert Graham ag the driver This 12 15 passenger bus ran as far as Lonie E111sv As to curriculum the first four years of HHS found these subjects being offered Enplish, American History, Plane and Solid Geometry, Biology, Business and Mental Arithmetic, Ancient and Medieval History, Commercial Law, Chemistry, Algebra I and II, Com ercial and Historical Geography, Latin, Spanish, Typing, Book keeping, Shorthand, Physics, Home Economics, and Physical Education The school grew steadily through the years under different principals and faculty members Men who have acted as principal of Hurricane High School are as follows Stuckey Roper Jeffers Sovine Xithers Nine Pauley Casto 1920 1926 1928 1 19 8 19 2 19 6 19 9 LL 1+ Various coaches have guided the athletic programs of HHS In the order of their tenure they are T D Roper, Harold MacKnight, Arthur Rezzonico, George Queen, M F Smith, H S Conner, John Graham, Clyde Alford, Ray Basham, and Nelson Bragg In 1925 HHS won the State High School Basketball Tournament, Division B The games were played at Marshall College under the coaching of Art Rezzonico Members of the championship team included Hubert Davis, Henry Hodges Truman Graham, Herbert Ford, Elmer Holstein, and nFritzR Grossl The first Junior high commencement was held in 1930 Caps and gowns were introduced for the first time this year for the senior high The Quill and Scroll honorary journalistic society, was organ ized in 1938 The student Council originated in 1937 with Vasco Morrison as sponsor Under the direction of K O Judy Vocational Agriculture was started in 1938 The school had an orchestra in 1938 with Mr Wilbur Howard as director HHS was admitted to the North Central Association May 8, 1939 The school had been under the observation of the NGA since 1937 th II . ll d w '. - w.
