HISTORY OF HURRICANE HIGH SCHOOL Curry District High School Kreferred to in late years as Hurricane High Schoolj was founded in 1920 with approximately S0 students Classes met above A N Sumner's store in rooms which are now the I O 0 F and K of P lodge rooms There were two teachers, Mr W T Stuckey, principal, and Miss Carrie Buckner llater Mrs Gordon Duddingj, GBCGBBSQ The pupils who made up this first student body had been going to school in the upstairs of the old graded school building They had remained in the 8th grade for two or more years because they had no high school to which to go Mr W E Thompson was principal of the graded school at this time The school was organized through efforts of a group headed by Mr Ben society for the Kiff, sr , npw deceased In meetings of a weekly debating Mr Kiff always talked for higher education a result of these efforts a bond election was held in 1919 purpose of raising money to build a high school building The bond carried, and the construction was started in 1921 In the fall of 1920 a group of boys scalped the ball diamond with hoes Mr H C Graham was manager of the baseball team and worked on this project There was an old tobacco barn standing where the high school now is located The barn was used as a dress ing room for ball teams Water was carried from Hurricane Creek In September, 1921, about 80 or 90 pupils attended classes in the two lower part of Hurricane known as Midway The classrooms were dwelling houses owned by Mr W P Davis and C E Whitten Cdeceasedl, Miss Kathryn Plymale, and Mr T D Roper Miss Plymale later married Mr Roper, who is now a chief chemist with Carbide and carbon Chemicals in South Charleston The fall of variousparts of building, with a room Students 1922 found the students town Some classes met chemistry class meeting attending classes in the old graded in the old nCec1l also used a store building located on the school Rogers corner where B L Henderson now has a wareroom About 150 160 students were enrolled tnis term in addition to some SO teachers who came in for a spring normal The faculty included Principal Stuckey, Mrs Edna Ball Mr Harold MacKn1ght, Mr John Fitzgerald, Miss Kathryn Plymale, Miss Catherine Brown, Mr Thomas D Roper, and Mr Edward C Bennett Elmer Locke served as janitor at S125 per month with H C Graham as his assistant at S25 per month A favorite motto of faculty member Bennett now hangs in Mr Graham's class r00m The motto is nwhat we attain too cheap, we esteem too lightlyu lThomas Painej In January, 1923, the students moved into the new high school buildlng on the Midland Trail In June, 1923, twenty three students received diplomas from Curry District High School in its first graduation ceremonies There was no football team at this time, but the baseball team was very active The local nine played such schools as Grifflthsville Hamlin, East Bank, Logan, Dunbar, Morris Harvey Academy, Becklev, etc There was also an outstanding track team which 5001! TZOP hon'-'JI'3 in the county The first ba ketball team in HHS met Milton in their opening encounter As The faculty consisted of Mr. stuckSy,'pr1nc1pa1, uQs.'Edna Ball in VI . , . .
