CLASS HISTORY ag THE HURRICANE Looking Backward In the fall of 1944 as the doors of H.H.S. swung open 85 eager freshmen entered with high hopes to conquer the task that lay' be- fore them. That of mastering four years of high school. The class was divided into two sections as follows: Section 1, president, Lindy Cook, vice-president, William Bates, secretary, Avonelle Estep, treasurer, Lloyd Gibson, sponsor, Ruth Miller. Section II, president, Johnny Lake? vice-president, Ladena Roop- er, secretary, Edna Leadmon, treasurer, Edna Leadmon, sponsor, H. C. Graham. During the freshman year the class was broud to have 5 of its members on the foot- ball squad, one on the basketball squad, two majorettes, 8 members in the band, 18 mem- bers in the chorus, 27 boys in the F.F.A. and one cheerleader taking part in the activities of the school. The next year in the fall of 1945, a step nearer to our goal, we entered as sophomores with 77 members. The officers this year were the following: Section I, president, Daphne Erwin, vice- president, Bill Beaver, secretary, Jimmie Butler, sponsor, Ruth Miller. Section II, president, Johnny Lake, vice-president, Bernard White, secretary, Edna Leadmon, treasurer, Edna Leadmon, sponsor, H. C. Graham. During the year of 1945 we had 7 mem- bers on the basketball squad, 5 members on the football squad, 11 members in the band, 23 members in the chorus, 3 majoretftes and 13 members in the F.F.A. Once again this same group of ambitious land I use that word loosely! boys and girls enrolled with the exception of 25, when out attendance dropped from 77 to 52. This was our junior year. The fall of '45. The class was divided into sections with Mr. Melville Gill as section I sponsor and Mr. Albert Neville as section II sponsor. The class officers in section I were: presi- dent, Lenora Coulter? vice-president, Wil- liam Bates, secretary, Mary Davis, treasur- er, Pauline Joyce, student council repre- sentative, Morrison Beckett. The officers in section II were: president, Doris Jean Miller, vice-president, Bernard White, sec- retary, Mae Rose Sowards, treasurer, Al- bert Martin, student council representative, Johnny Lake. This and our senior year were backed with activities for nearly all the students. This year among other activities were two plays. The first was Sunbonnet Jane of Sycamore Lane , starring Peggy Davis, Johnny Lake, Daphne Erwin, Ramona Staf- ford, Imogene Hodges, 'Stanley Hodges, Mary Davis, Bill Bates, Ladena Rooper, Al- bert Martin, and Lenora Coulter. The secondplay was entitled A Bargain Is a Bargain , starring Stanley Hodges, Lenora Coulter, Peggy Davis, Imogene Hodges, Albert Martin, Gerry Tyler, Mary Davis, Wanda Powers, and Ladena Rooper. Once again we have quite a few boys play- ing football and basketball out of our class., They were as follows: Basketball-Gerry Tyler. Football-Charles Lucus, Jimmy Butler Gerry Tyler, Albert lVIartin, Hubert Miller: and Clyde Crouse. Eight members of the band belong to the- junior class. Among these were the drum major, Daphne Erwin, and co-bajor, Doris- Jean Miller. Several members of our class went to the class C all-state band at Hunt-- ington. One of the school's four cheerleaders was from our class. Out of the 37 all-girl chorus members, 20' of these were out of our junior class. Miss Redskin's attendants were elected from the junior class. They were Peggy Davis and Betty Pennington. At last our goal was reached and we be- came seniors, at least 49 of us. We then only had half what we started out with. The class officers were: president, Bill Berv- er, vice-president, Johnny Lake, secretary,: Edna Leadmoni treasurer, Lessie Lawson. Our two senior sponsors were: section I, Coach Ray Basham, section II, Mr. Albert Neville. The outstanding honor students were Bet- ty May Lovett, valdictorian, and Ladena Rooper, salutatorian. This year marked the beginning of clubs in H.H.S., at least while we were here. The names of the clubs are: Dramatic Club, Lit- erary Society, Press Club, Elite Club, 4-H Club, Latin Club, Y-Teens Club, H Club, Orchestra, and Student Council. The Dramatic Club presented two plays, the first was, Let's Be Congenial , with 5 seniors playing leading roles. They were: Lenora Coulter, Johnny Lake, Bill Beaver. Mary Davis, and Peggy Davis. The second play was The Movies Come to Town , with 8 seniors: Ladena Rooper, Vincent Paul, Imogene Hodges, Stanley Hodges, Daphne Erwin, Peggy Davis, Lenora Coulte1', and Johnny Lake. ' The Student Council of '47 elected 3 of their officers from the senior class: presi- dent, Johnny Lake, secretary, Pauline Joyce, treasurer, Lessie Lawson.
