'43, '44, '45, '46, '47, Dramatic Club '46, '47, CLASS HISTORY ag THE HURRICANE Looking Backward In the fall of 1944 as the doors of H.H.S. swung open 85 eager freshmen entered with high hopes to conquer the task that lay' be- fore them. That of mastering four years of high school. The class was divided into two sections as follows: Section 1, president, Lindy Cook, vice-president, William Bates, secretary, Avonelle Estep, treasurer, Lloyd Gibson, sponsor, Ruth Miller. Section II, president, Johnny Lake? vice-president, Ladena Roop- er, secretary, Edna Leadmon, treasurer, Edna Leadmon, sponsor, H. C. Graham. During the freshman year the class was broud to have 5 of its members on the foot- ball squad, one on the basketball squad, two majorettes, 8 members in the band, 18 mem- bers in the chorus, 27 boys in the F.F.A. and one cheerleader taking part in the activities of the school. The next year in the fall of 1945, a step nearer to our goal, we entered as sophomores with 77 members. The officers this year were the following: Section I, president, Daphne Erwin, vice- president, Bill Beaver, secretary, Jimmie Butler, sponsor, Ruth Miller. Section II, president, Johnny Lake, vice-president, Bernard White, secretary, Edna Leadmon, treasurer, Edna Leadmon, sponsor, H. C. Graham. During the year of 1945 we had 7 mem- bers on the basketball squad, 5 members on the football squad, 11 members in the band, 23 members in the chorus, 3 majoretftes and 13 members in the F.F.A. Once again this same group of ambitious land I use that word loosely! boys and girls enrolled with the exception of 25, when out attendance dropped from 77 to 52. This was our junior year. The fall of '45. The class was divided into sections with Mr. Melville Gill as section I sponsor and Mr. Albert Neville as section II sponsor. The class officers in section I were: presi- dent, Lenora Coulter? vice-president, Wil- liam Bates, secretary, Mary Davis, treasur- er, Pauline Joyce, student council repre- sentative, Morrison Beckett. The officers in section II were: president, Doris Jean Miller, vice-president, Bernard White, sec- retary, Mae Rose Sowards, treasurer, Al- bert Martin, student council representative, Johnny Lake. This and our senior year were backed with activities for nearly all the students. This year among other activities were two plays. The first was Sunbonnet Jane of Sycamore Lane , starring Peggy Davis, Johnny Lake, Daphne Erwin, Ramona Staf- ford, Imogene Hodges, 'Stanley Hodges, Mary Davis, Bill Bates, Ladena Rooper, Al- bert Martin, and Lenora Coulter. The secondplay was entitled A Bargain Is a Bargain , starring Stanley Hodges, Lenora Coulter, Peggy Davis, Imogene Hodges, Albert Martin, Gerry Tyler, Mary Davis, Wanda Powers, and Ladena Rooper. Once again we have quite a few boys play- ing football and basketball out of our class., They were as follows: Basketball-Gerry Tyler. Football-Charles Lucus, Jimmy Butler Gerry Tyler, Albert lVIartin, Hubert Miller: and Clyde Crouse. Eight members of the band belong to the- junior class. Among these were the drum major, Daphne Erwin, and co-bajor, Doris- Jean Miller. Several members of our class went to the class C all-state band at Hunt-- ington. One of the school's four cheerleaders was from our class. Out of the 37 all-girl chorus members, 20' of these were out of our junior class. Miss Redskin's attendants were elected from the junior class. They were Peggy Davis and Betty Pennington. At last our goal was reached and we be- came seniors, at least 49 of us. We then only had half what we started out with. The class officers were: president, Bill Berv- er, vice-president, Johnny Lake, secretary,: Edna Leadmoni treasurer, Lessie Lawson. Our two senior sponsors were: section I, Coach Ray Basham, section II, Mr. Albert Neville. The outstanding honor students were Bet- ty May Lovett, valdictorian, and Ladena Rooper, salutatorian. This year marked the beginning of clubs in H.H.S., at least while we were here. The names of the clubs are: Dramatic Club, Lit- erary Society, Press Club, Elite Club, 4-H Club, Latin Club, Y-Teens Club, H Club, Orchestra, and Student Council. The Dramatic Club presented two plays, the first was, Let's Be Congenial , with 5 seniors playing leading roles. They were: Lenora Coulter, Johnny Lake, Bill Beaver. Mary Davis, and Peggy Davis. The second play was The Movies Come to Town , with 8 seniors: Ladena Rooper, Vincent Paul, Imogene Hodges, Stanley Hodges, Daphne Erwin, Peggy Davis, Lenora Coulte1', and Johnny Lake. ' The Student Council of '47 elected 3 of their officers from the senior class: presi- dent, Johnny Lake, secretary, Pauline Joyce, treasurer, Lessie Lawson. The football and basketball squads werg also well supplied with members of the sen- ior class. They were as follows: Basketball-Gerry Tyler, Bill Beaver, and fcontinued on page 565 THE HURRICANE P89017 CLAS I, Mary Davis, do hereby will and be- queath my ability to day-dream to Judy Un- derwood, hoping more dreams come true for her than did for me. Being very curious, I wasn't one to turn down such an offer. This invention was something like a microscope and I de- cided to focus it on the graduating class of 1947. I first turned it toward the West and what is that? Why! It is a farm and who lives here? None other than Bill Bates and Ilene Dent, now Mr. and Mrs. They are now en- gaged in a most interesting occupation, Raising Colts . A hospital appears and I see the world's most famous Dr. Bernard White and his very efficient nurse, Marion Sullivan. Wheel That was a close shave. Who can afford a car like that? She zooms up and stops in front of a newstand owned by Chuck Erskine. It is Louise Coyner. Hollywood appears and I see Mary Lee Davis rehearsing her new movie, The Dreamer , with R.K.O. Lessie Lawson, Ann Allen, and Doris Jean Miller are chorus girls in this movie. And now in a country school I see Ger- maine Johnson, her specks properly adjust- ed on her nose and a paddle in her hand, giving the children their morning exercises. A little farther down the road I see the country store with the owner, Vincent Paul, perched an a nailkeg, swatting flies and snoozing between swats. In New York I see a sign that reads: Professional Giggling Taught to Girls . Instructor Rufus Cottle. I peek into the window of the White House and see Everett Gillispie, our newly elected President, and his secretary Marcel- lain Sullivan. . I see two ladies entering a newspaper of- fice that has a sign in the window Our Ads Bring Results . One of the ladies draw the ad they are planning to place in the paper and I see Husbands Wanted . The ladies are Ladena Rooper and Peggy Davis. A quick change of scenery brings us to Africa where Albert Martin is preaching to a crowd of starry eyed natives who are list- ening with amazement. His efficient little helper is Geraldine Bowens, who seems to be the main attraction among the males. Back in the U. S. again a neat vine-cover- ed cottage appears and I see the owners put- tering around in the garden. They' are Johnny Lake and Daphne Erwin. Johnny, Jr., is now their main interest. I am now back in the familiar town of Hurricane and hear opera music floating out of McCallister's Restaurant. I look in and see thesinger, Lenora Coulter. On Wall Street I see Dewey Miller hurry- ing along. Dewey is now a multi-mil1ion- aire. I see a school for kindergarden students and who is the teacher? Well, well if it isn't Wilma Hodges. I see Imogene Hodges in a radio studio announcing the station. Gerry Tyler and his 3-piece symphony band have just come off the air. A little farther to the north is and airport owned by Stanley' Hodges. I see him, his wif-e, the former Emma Bindemann, and the three little pilots standing beside the family plane. A famous old college comes into View and I see Morrison Beckett, the president with his combined wife and secretary, Edna Leadmon. Mae Rose Sowards is one of the students attending this college and she is also the speed typist of America. Scott Depot is now a very popular place in West Virginia. All this popularity is due to the Nut Cracker Theater, Inc. Private ly owned by Wanda Powers and Pauline Joyce. One of Texas' most famous animal clinics is owned and operated by Okey' Miller and Rosabell Runion. This Clinic is open to cow-bunchers bronchos only. In the Rose Bowl I see a very famous foot- ball game in progress. The star players are Charles'Lucas, Bill Beaver, and Hubert Mil- Qler. ' Chrysler's, Inc., is now ruled by the stern 'hand of Thomas Sloan. Betty Pennington is his secretary. But wait, has Betty ever 'had any secretarial training. ' I see a Ford V-8 coming down the road. It stops at a dairy owned by Chester Ersk- ine. Charles Garrett gets out but leaves his wife, the former Pauline Persinger, sitting with her foot on the brake to keep the car 'from taking up over the hill. I see Betty May Lovett sitting in her back yard with Bob, Jr., turned over her checked apron, because of a straight F report card. I see a showboat coming down the Missis- sippi River. This boat is owned and operat- ed by Jean Rooper and Maxine Carpenter, who were originally Hollywood's most fa- mous comedians, but decided to stop being so silly. Result: They are Siller. After all the pleasant views a tragic one now appears. I see Dewell Pate, a truck driber, entering a bar in North Carolina, the bar is owned and operated by Allen Boulware. Dewell is looking for a drink to settle his nerves. He has just run into Gretna Burns. Won't you ever stop knock- ing that traffic around, Gretna? I am very sorry this old man is not selling his invention but if they ever appear on the market for sale, please buy one. You will get a bargain. By Jean Rooper and Gretna Burns. It's doing your job the best you can, And being just to your fellow man, Not making money, but holding friends, And staying true to your aims and ends. It's figuring how and learning why, And looking forward and thinking high, And dreaming little and doing muchg It's keeping always in closest touch With what is finest in word and deedg , It's daring blithely the field of chance While making of labor a brave romance. It's going onward despite defeat And fighting staunchly, but keeping sweet, It's being clean and it's playing fair, It's laughing lightly at Dame Despair, It's looking up at the stars above, And drinking deeply of life and love. I It's struggling on with the will to win, But taking loss with a cheerful grin. It's sharing sorrow, and work and mirth, And making better this good old earth. Halfback THE HURRICANE' SPORTS By ALBERT MARTIN The season started with the flashy full- back, Bill Beaver, and Lindy Cook back from the service. Their strength helped in the back field of the Redskins. Little Figgie Turner's throwing arm proved to be a great help too. Beaver is a fast shifty back. While Cook moves very fast and a good blocker. Turner is a fast halfback which makes him a good ball carrier. Martin a fast and effec- tive blocker and pass receiver makes him dangerous. Lucas a big and fast end which makes it tough on the ball carriers, his mate Hubert Miller is one of the best tacklers in the state. Sovine, another rough and rugged tackle. Coyner is a fine guard. Bob Beav- er, I would like to praise him for the fine centering and quick thinking. Wilson a very fine guard. Lucas the other end Was very good pass receiver.
