1978 MARKED BY STARS A D STRIKES The nation watched new talent rise to fame and mourned the deaths of entertainers who will live on immortally in the contributions they made to the American society. Star Wars Artoo Detoo captured the hearts of moviegoers. An HHS graduate, Cheryl Ladd, became Charlie's newest angel. The nation was shocked by the death of the king of rock and roll, Elvis Presley. Debby Boone's first single, You Light Up My Life was an im- mediate hit and stayed on top of the charts for many weeks. Farmers throughout the United States went on strike for 100'Xa parity and threatened to stop planting crops. The United Mine Workers also went on strike and forced President Carter to use the Taft-Hartley Act. The coal workers demanded more pay and better working con- ditions. President Carter's first year in office had its ups and downs. His energy package was re- jected by Congress, while the Panama Canal's future went unsettled for a time. All the nation mourned the death of the Happy Warrior , Hubert H. Humphrey, who died in his home in Minnesota. 1. President Carter gives his State of the Union speech. 2. Hubert H. Humphrey died in his home in Minnesota. 3. Cheryl Ladd, former HHS student, became Charlie's newest angel on televi- sion.

PROGRESS A D CHA GES REFLECT O 1978 The spring of 1978 brought an abundant rainfall for South Dakotans. Flooding oc- cured in many areas in South Dakota, in- cluding Huron's Riverside Park. The St. John Regional Medical Center was sold to the community, and is now run by a board of directors from the Huron area. A former HHS graduate, Cheryl Ladd, became an angel on the popular television show, Charlie's Angels. Because of the widening of Dakota Avenue, HHS students suddenly found themselves with two Dakotas : Kansas Avenue and Wisconsin Avenue. Throughout the school year, construction of the Huron mall and an apartment complex took place directly across from the high school. In mid-winter the apartment complex burnt to the ground but was quickly rebuilt in the spring. 1. St. John Regional Medical Center was sold to the community. 2.
