Math and Science Prod The challenges of SCIenCe and mathemab ics Were enhanced last year by completeiy new laboratory facilities and greater flexxbllr ity in the curriculum. Students interested in delvmg into the mysteries of smence and mathematics found vast new opportunities for experimentation and probleinsolvmg, The purpose of high school science Courses is to prepare the student for college work in the sciences, Three new science laboratories gave the students a chance for a first-hand look a! the phenomena of biology, chemistry; and phys- ics. The BIOLOGY lab is equipped with cages for animals used in student projects. Apparatus for dissecting preserved animal specimens was used considerably. ande for the study of botany. various plant species were kept and studied in the lab CHEMISTRY students were able to put their new lab equipment to good use as they examined the characteristics and composi- tion of the various chemicals Some of the phases of chemistry studied were the felt mentation process. the making of chlorine gas and qualitative and quantitative equae tions. PHYSICS students used their laboratory equipment basmally for the study of heat, light and sound The physics department is still in the process of obtaining lab equip. ment for the Physical Smence Study Com- mxtlee tPSSCi type of study. This will enable each group of four students in the future to perform their own experiments The considerable use of Visual aids helped the mathematics student in undezu standing the complexxties of the number system. New study tables equipped with def- initions. temperature conversion tables. geometric figures and numerical definitions on their surfaces saved the students consid- arable time which might have spent search ing' through textbooks Subjects taught in the math department are ALGEBRA, the study of mathematical structure and the various number systems; GEOMETRY. the study of plane and solid structures; TRIGONOMETRY and CALCU- LUS, the study of basic trigonometric fuch lions, and introductory FUNDAMENTAL ANALYSIS Which includes the study of the algebras of real numbers.
