But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully. . . . Timothy 128. MR. LANG uses it lawfully for he is A Judge, An Eminent Lawyer, An Honored Administrator, A Noted Educator, A Profound Scholar, A Noble Citizen, A Friend . . . who has served his nation, his state, his city with that same sacrificial devotion and exemplary zeal which have characterized his loyalty and service to Huron High School for the past three decades. He is strong, yet gentle, self-respecting, yet not conceited, candid, yet courteousg loves freedom, yet respects law. We appreciate his service for the cause of public education. His contributions as Superintendent of the Huron City Schools have been many and varied and need not be enumerated in detail here. His admin- istration encompassed the years of the depression and of World War II when succeeding crises threatened the schools of the nation, state, and city. These crgises were met in stride and solved completely or alleviated as much as conditions would permit. He has every right to feel that he has fought the good fight for the cause of public education EDUCATKHJ University of Michigan, LL.B. Columbia University, B.S. In the Tiger of '49 We have a most ingenious device for presenting the past as if it were occurring in the present. Using the theme, TIGERS, FORTY- NINERS, We have commemorated in this centennial year the California Gold Rush, one of the outstanding episodes in our nation's history. The Rush for Gold is a thrilling chapter in the history of our country. It is a story of early California, of mining camps, and of western trails. It is a story of the courage and vision of the rugged, sturdy man. The rapid development of that territory made possible our great present day industries in the West-agriculture, lumbering, cattle raising, fishing, railroading, shipping-all of which contribute so greatly to our national Wealth and prosperity. igerd, gorfy- mnem CCONTENTSD On Our Way By Prairie Schooner With Highest Esteem Of Tiger Days During The Rush For Gold Dust Among The Caravans Behind The Scouts Across The Plains Over The Nlountains Through The Desert After The Nuggets Along The Streams In The West Subtitle Title Dedication Foreword Contents Sponsors A cknowledginents Administration Classes A ctivities A thletics Features Index A utographs owing -7Ae HMA tSponsorsl We would like to extend our grateful recognition to THE BUSINESS MEN OF HURON and OTHER LOYAL SUPPORTERS whose financial assistance has made THIS TIGER possible. Not photoed: Mr. Louis Allen, Day Engineer. Custodions The custodians of Huron Senior High School have a big job to do, but Harry Peek, Clyde Day, G. R. Bowder, Louie Allen, and Floyd Roush find time to over- see the upkeep of our building, the grounds, and to be present at our social functions. The janitors are the six men who keep the boards clean, the floors slick and see that the buildings, inside and out, are in good condition. Mr. Peek has charge of the old Senior High School building. Mr. Day is custo- dian of the new Senior High annex. Mr. Allen is day engineer. Mr. Floyd Roush is night engineer. Mr. William Zeller is bus driver and night watchman. The students don't realize what they owe to the school's able custodians. It never occurs to them when they come on a cold January morning, that someone had to come early and heat the school. They like the halls and rooms clean, but they never clean them themselves. Yes, they owe a big debt to the janitorial staff. These able persons clean the buildings, tire the stokers, manage the lighting and heating systems. They take personal pride in keeping the school's equipment in good condition. They gain as many loyal followers as they contact from early morning when Harry Peek raises Old Glory until eve- ning when to the last strains of Home Sweet Home, '4Bill Zeller ushers out the last students on a dance night. The year around the custodian corps adds to Huron High students comfort and delight from keeping them toasty warm in winter to beautifying the grounds in summer. D Study in the art department has as its aim the development of the individual student's ability in free art expression and of his understanding and enjoyment of the art expression of others as well as of his natural surroundings. The course, which demands originality and discourages the copying of other ar- tists, work, includes art history and gen- eral appreciation, sketching from life and from nature, painting in various mediums, sculptoring, color theory and color har- mony, design, and the application of de- sign to constructed articles and to com- mercial art. L Miss Alice Ritchey Because an art department should also answer the need of the student who does not seek a career in art but who wants the understanding and natural joy that comes from working with color and form, provi- sion is made for that type of student. As part of such a program an art club has been formed in which the student may work as he pleases with the inspiration of other students working around him and with the help of an instructor. This work has largely taken the form of craft work and the application of design and color. It is asked that only those who have had a foundation in junior high school or sen- ior high school for art Work be members of the club. It is informal in organization and procedure and has been the source of much pleasure on the part of art-minded high school students. sixty-two On Rugged Paths J Back row left to right: Beverly Marso. Mrs. Gunda Mohn Tollefson How to use the High School Library is a subject well worth knowing. Most student-members of the Library Club aim to learn as much of this Work as time spent on duty will permit. There is variety in a day's work-checking, cleaning, mending, and shelving books and magazines, typing, issuing due slips, maintaining attendance records, miscellaneous errands and help- ing the students find material. These and all other opportunities to serve the school constitute the purpose of the club. As a foundation for serving students are expected to know the Library rules, the Apprentice Code, the system of cata- loging, and how to use the card catalog, the Readers' Guide, and the general refer- ence books. Proper deportment and good scholarship are also indexes to adequate service, and prerequisite for membership. Reward for all these services may be little other than the satisfaction of being helpful. The spirit of cooperation, thought- fulness, and friendliness among the L. C.'s is making the Library an attractive place in which to study. To the extent that those who use the Library are willing to co- operate in just so far can the gratis serv- ice accomplish its purpose. Club meetings are held once a month after school for instruction and special ac- tivities. Attendance upon these meetings is required. From time to time the L. C.'s have pre- pared posters and exhibits featuring new and special classes of books, seasons, holi- days, and anniversaries.
