To-day we are at war against the Axis nations. Their way of life and their ideals are so repugnant to us LhaL we accept war rather than peace at their price. If the allies, the ABCD nations are saved. it will be by men. It Will be by the Americans, Brit- ish, Chinese and Dutch fighting side by side against overwhelming odds in numbers and equip- ment. The war Will be won by the heroism of the men in Lhe armed forces and by the energy and sacrifice of the ones which remain at home. You graduales must first face a world at war before you can face a world at peacei As steel is valuable only after it has gone through this tempering prnCPsS, su citizenship is valued in the proportion of saanccs made This is your commencement, You must com- mence to think like adults. to act like adults, and to commence in Lake on adult responsiblllties. Huron High Three years have passed, and now at last, We're on the road to success. Parting company here, with friends 50 dear. Bring moments of deep thoughtfulness. Friends we have known, friendships that have grown, Will be lost in this cross-road of life, But the memories will linger on still. As though carved by an indelible knife, The memories of classes, of students in masses, At games and at dances gone by, These hundreds of faces, these numerous places, In our memories never will die. Snme go to college. to obtain further knowledge. Others different roads and careers. Though we meet new faces. and gain new places, Well remember our high school years. We are now in a fight. to establish the right, Of our demncralic way, And some must go to meet the me. To drive the threat away. So before we leave, let's stop and breathe, This air that lingers here, Look for your pals. the boys and the gals. That through these years have gruwn so dear. Just the same. ltYs the game, Though I cnulan tell anyone why, So that we stand here. with joy and a tear, As to all we say thanks. and guod-bye! Class September 11, 1939 Dear Diary: Today the doors of higher learning burst wide open, and the hungry mokhungry for knowledge, of courseg rushed in to start another nine months in Huron Senior High. I was sleeping over the dour when the main rush aroused me, I gave both the old and the new students a good in- spection, especially the new sophomorest September 22, 1939 Today was a red-letter day in my life, The sophomore class held a meeting, and after scrutinizing these neophytes closely, I felt such an attraction towards them that I de- cided to adopt them as my own class, and to help them through their three years of high school, Incidentally, during this meeting they elected Len McGinty, Scott Woodward, and Nadine Abler, as officers. May 31, 1940 Tonight as I sit down to summarize the accomplishments of my sophomores, I think they have more than lived up to my expectae tions. With thirty-three in tLA Club they cant be completely ignorant, Six in the stu- dent council showed their leadership; as for the activitiey well clear diary, listen to this: a quarter of the class went musical and helped Huron as it played host to the music festival; three burly hrutes won their letters on the glorious gridiron: representatives were in Declam and Tiger Hay; and a majority of the girls became aIluring in GAA and Pi Alph. December 31, 1940 I wonder if in the entrance to higher learning there isn't a revolving door, for some seem to get caught in it, and then, falling behind, drop out entirely, Anyway, when my class, now Juniors, returned to school this fall the number had narrowed down, though not enough to really hamper it. The class is steadily filling in the more important spots, having a strong representa- tion on the Tiger Staff and fourteen boys carrying the torch for Huron's traditionally great teams Also, Juniors are taking imv purtant chairs in the instrumental depart- ment, and some nl' the Glee Club members have moved up into Treble Clef and Trouba- dours. Some rugged indtvidualists from the :lass are successful on the debate and declam teams, while sums other hardy souls have launched a new organization called the Hi Yt Excellent judgment was shown again in choice of officers, Elmer Evans, Frank Blechinger, and Scott Woodward. History May 29, 1941 When the class finished its Junior year yesterday there were no sighs nor regret. ful looks east at the deserted school build- ing, but all were looking joyfully ahead to the climax of their school life, their senior year 1 However, the past year's activities certainly deserve honorable men- tion, First there was that laugh hit of the season in which some of our boys became HOur Girls for the Junior Play, and then that fine Operetta, Memories of Old Vienna? But for the juniors the biggest event of the year was the Junior-Scnjor Prom, put an by the Junior Class under the leadership of McGinty, Wodward, and Wage her, class officers for the second semester. December 31, 1941 Gosh, diary, this has been a hectic semestert Pve been hopping around so much trying to keep up with these seniors that I'm worn down ta a mere shell of my former self. Yes-sir, We a good thing to be young and strong when youtre a high school senior, because the seniors practically run the place; and in trying to crowd as muCh fun and activity as passible into whatts left of school life, they are in everything and miss nothing. This year the Boys1 Slaters introduced politics, with all its trimmings, into the election of the senior oHicerS. There were political partiest caucauses. campaigns, and an elec- tion by secret ballot. It was a split vote With a third party candidate, Scott Woodward, winning out for president, and Frank Blechinger and Nadine Abler were other winners. At the same time Reedy Berg and Alice Mae Bond were elected by the student body to reign over the joyous festivities of the annual Tiger Day. May 31. 1942. Basketball seasun, music festival. senior playt Operetta, track, senior breakfast, senior farewelL and now the culmination of three great yearwgraduation! Yes, they entered the doors of higher learning when they came t here. but those doors will nevcr Close behind tthcm, for they will never graduate from the , r . N school of life. Itts going to be tough on them, especially with the war, but they don't need me anymore. theylve got what it takes. they're my class, the class of '42, Delbert Bakeman Robert Mycue Hazel Linnctt Signed.
