May 28, 1941 Place: Front steps of Senior High School Building Characters: Bob and Betty-typical graduating seniors BOB: Well, Betty, tomorrow night we march down the aisle wearing these square hats for the last time BETTY: It sounds terribly Hnal, doesn't it? The mere thought reminds me of all the fun we've had and how we're going to miss it. It dates :way back to our sophomore year when we elected Mr. Shepersky as sponsor. We had a choice selection of officers, too, in Bob Whitney, Chan Beach, and Beverly Ericsont But with only three afficers we still had two more than we had football players. BOB: That's irrelevant. But we did seem to run to brains instead of brawn. We had only two members in the H Club as compared to forty-three super-intellects in the AIA I CIlub. BETTY: Now that we're remlmscmg, cone sider all the sophomore girls in GAA, as well as Girl Reserves, Verse Choir, and Pi Alpha Iota, BOB: Don't mention Pl Alpha to me! It re- minds me of hordes of saphomore girls demand- ing carsages. BETTY: If you're allergic tu corsages let's talk about some nice safe corsageless I event like the three-schuol music festival at Mitchell. BOB: At the same time dont forget the Pep Club and the Tiger play. . BETTY: Especially the production stali I was on that. BOB: Speaking of unsung heroes, we had four hardy souls in the debate and declam dun- len. BETTY: And will you ever forget the cheere leading squad that year!! There were two soph- omores an it and were they effective! I BOB: During the summer, Bhtzkneg and other forces took out about twenty Imembers so we started our junior year approximately 180 strong, I I I . BETTY: From those remalmng, Including both students, and faculty, we elected Mn Shep- ersky, Miss Larsen. and Mr. Arndt, as sponsors, and Marvin Peek, Bub Klar. and Peggy Hall as s. omeleartDB: Last year we reversedl tQIe brain and brawn racedurc-eight boys, inc u mg ?Iur one and onlr; state golf champ, made the H Club, but our membership in the A Club dropped to thirty-thrce. I BETTY: Ah, but you forget our draIfnatlc clement. Why. one out oervery three went Hollywood in either the Junior Play or the Tiger Play, 'tLife Begins at 163' BOB: Oh. to he sixteen againll BETTY: However. even at that tender ago our talents Weren't confined solely to the Thes- pian Art. Besides Band and Orchestra, our JIumor year saw the birth of that small but lusty httle organization, the Pep Band. BOB: Of course we had our more frivolous moments. The crowning event of the social seae san was the Junior-Senior From all done up Mexican style down to the last tamale. BETTY: Then after the tigers of vacation and the draft had taken their quotas, we found our number was redhced to approximately 170. BQB: But we sun had enough left to do a goud jObI of electing officers Harold Kambak, Hay Kammsky and Bob Zieske, and sponsors Mr. Reutter. Mr. Hottmann, Miss Brown, and Mrs. Ruhlrnanl IBETTY: Speaking at elections. the peoples shame, LaVila Brenner and Bob Klar, made a nght Iroyal couple to rule over the Tiger Day festtwtles. IBOB: Yd say it was more like mub .ule with rushmg the show and the snake dance. How- ever. I thmk the real hit of the day was the der- by-hatted Pep Band's assembly program. BETTX You're always plugging the Pep Band and Ignoring our other musical productions suph as On Our Way and uMemories of Old Vienna, BOB: It seerIned that we had barely recDVr cred from the mld-year exams this year when along came the Junior-Senior Prom. BETTY: After which approximately 25 people hved through a harassing two hours in the prmclpal's nifice with that universal favorite, Henry Aldrich, in What a Life. . BOB: Henry at least got Hrst-rate publicity WIHI 28 Senior newshounds on the Tiger and yearbook staffs to look after his interests. IBETTY: ltls lucky we don,t have any Henry: AIdnchs around here or our Senior Student Cahncll members would have a full time job on then hands. BOB: Of course our reminiscences wouldn, be complete without mention of the football and bIasketball teams, and incidentally all the season uckets that we and everybody else last. IBETTY: And do you remember the Music festival at Watertown and how glad we were to agam see our old friend. Mr. McPhail? 1393: And climainng our Senior activities we SklPPEd OR to Brooklngs, Later we concluded our school career by attending the Senior Prom and the Senior Breakfast. BETTY: We have had a lot of fun, havenlt we? You know I've been thinking of graduation as the end of our good times. However, it is many inst the first step in the big adventure at n 6. Although they did not win the highest laurels they were known and respected by their opponents as one of the scrappiest teams in the conference The season closed with seven wins and eleven losses, including the sectional tournament. Ale though the losses were greater than the victories, a number of them were only by a few points. of the eleven setbacks, eight were lost by a timer- ence of only one to five points; which goes to Show that a team can't always be Judged by its wins and defeats. The season opened with onlyithree icttcrmen returning. They were Ray Kammskyna regular last year, Harry Reese and Leo McGinty, who were both reserves. The remainder of the squad was composed of Jack VanArsdale, Dale Case, Scott Woodward, Elmer Evans. Harris Brenner, Frank Bleehinger, and Vernon Timperly from last year's B team and Bill Davies, a transfer student from Clark. . At the head a! the sconhg column this year was Ray Kaminsky, the Tigers' sharpshooting center. Closely following him were Jack Van Arsdale, Dale Case. Harris Brenner, Harry Reese. and Elmer Evans. Defensiveleuster Reese and Scotty Woodward were the mainstays. The Tigcrs started the season on the win side of the scoring column with a 32-27 victory over RedHeldi Our boys led all the way with Harry Reese, Jack Van Arsdale, and Ray Kaminsky as the stars. . Next week we were invaded by a strong bunch of Golddiggers from Lead. The 'game was a real thriller. but Lead slipped aheed in the last quarter and won, 29-28. Bill Davies and Ka- minsky best supported nuricause. After Christmas vacation, the Otangu and Black have started a disastrous road tnp by run- ning into Brookings, Our hoopsters could not hit the hoop and went down, 24-13. The next game was at Yankton, where tht Bucks rode over the Tigers to a time of 20.11 Ray Kaminsky was our bright spotim the defeat. The night after Yanhton, our dribblers played the State Champs of Mitchell. iWay below par. we dropped, 27-14. Bud Brenner showed up well H ron. . fm- 132m in the home dent our Tigers poured on the heat and broke the Watertgwn Armws to a happy 39-27 score, Bruiser Kathmsky was hottest of the hot, and Buster Reeses fioorwork was hnest of the fine. . Broukings soon learned that revenge is sweet when they played here. 'They were snowed un. der, 27-14. Again Kammsky and Reese led uron outfit. the 131180 mnrc playing away from home, we found Aberdeen too tough for uS. Despite gap. tain Kaminsky's astounding long-range shooting, the Eagles turned us back. 24-18. Our lads' next game was at Redheld, and we u t the Pheasants with a 36-27 win. Jack Van ighale, Scott Woodward, and Ray Kammsky provided the peint-getting punch, Although we were set for Mitchell with a glint in our eyes, the speedy Kernels again took our measure, but this time not so decisively. The score was 25-21. Once more it was the work of Kaminsky and Woodward that kept us in the ball game. Then a fast and tall group of Warriors from Sioux Falls came up to see us. They picked a bad time to get iihot tbad for usi, and antral! us, 22-17, Most thrilling game at the season was be tween our victory-hungry Tigers and Aberdeen's Golden Eagles. It was a dogfight from the first whistle to the linal gun, filled with hysterical rooting for both teams and even a slugging match on the court. Sparked by Dale Case. Curly Woodward, and Hat-Shet Kaminsky, the Tigers pulled ahead, and staved off a last-minute Aber- deen rally to emerge on top by the tight score of 24-22 Again Dul' buys took to the mad and antw tempted to invade Watertown, We failed in the Effort, however, and were turned back, 24-20i In the last home game of the seasun, we played host to Madison's Bulldogs. perhaps the iastest team in the league, We matched them stride for Stride, however, and finaliy obtained a 30-29 margin with a minute and a half to gut Then we proved that we could slow down to a walk as we stalled the time away. Senior Elmer Evans, making his final home appearance, and Sophomore Jack VanArsdale led us to the vic- tory, The following week we went to Madison for a return engagement. The Bulldogs tore us apart to a 40-22 score With a breath-taking final halfi Scott Wondward showed up best for aur Tiger; The final conference game of the season found us at Sioux Falls playing their tailer team of court men. In a fast, thrilling game, the Wars riars edged us out 32-th Our last quarter rally was stopped by the gun, Woodward, Davies, Kaminsky, and Reese led our balanced attack. On Thursday, March sixth, our Tigers tripped to Mitchell for the sectional A tournament. In the afternoon we swamped Pierre's smaller Gav- ei'nors to an overwhelming 42-20 score, Scott Woodward led the boys, with Evans, Case, and McGinty right behind him. The Finals of the tournament put us against last year's State HA Champions and this years Number One team in the Conference, the smooth. speedy Kernels from Mitchell. The game was a dogfight all the way, with Mitchell leading at the half anti Huron at the three-quarter mark. A final period spurt by the Kernels put them ahead too fairnand they won, 25.23. Harry Reese was the driving forge behind the Orange and Black, and Bill Davies led the scoring attack Neither Ray Kammsky nor Jack Van Arsdale saw much service because of sickness.
