But we were no longer the newest regiment, we now could lord it ever the incoming recruits and have revenge for the out rages practiced on us the year before. However, 1111 edict of General Bowden thwarted our plans, and the green recruits received a cool reception. Time-honored customs were put aside and the newcomers were not dominated as in former years. But the order of General Bowden Was respected and hostilities were practically suspended We elected Markey for Colonel again, Gardner fer Lieutenant, and Private Suuer for keeper of records. We had FL very profitable year with these officers to handle the affairs of 0111' regiment, and set out'to show the other regiments how to have a good time Several of our men distinguished themselves in the heavy 01- light artillery. I11 one 111emurahleoccasion the light artillery of 0111' regiment won the championship of the rest of the regiments of the barracks. Almost before we could believe it the year was over, the 16th regiment was discharged and we were promoted to the third 11111111 During this year our regiment won fame and honor for the Orange 11,1111 the Black. The officers for the year were Colonel Mhl'key, Lieutenant Gardner and Private Snuer. General Bowden at this time decided that there slmuhl be a change in the 111a11z11re111e11t of the 131111111 211111 thot it ought to be turned over to the soldier This was finally done, after much discussion, and two officials were elected from each reghneut. The plan succeeded well because of the honor of the $01- 1liel's. By way of shuwing that We were at 12151 nf some importance, we gave 21 banquet to our esteemed superiors. Thanks to the enthusiasm and pep of the 18th reginwnt, we suc- ceeded in starting 21 111011tl11y publication, recording the events at the barracks. Anmng those who won renown and glory for us in the 111'ti1- lery squall were Pl'iVates Joseph, Groves, Light 111111 Reilly. 111 the Hunl contest of the light artillery it was mostly due to the soldiers of 0111' 1'egime11t that the Orange and the Black won 1111 undisputed cheunpionship over the other eneampnwnts of the state. We then 11 11-11 0111' hmul at Dl'muutics, and the play we gave W15 m1 overwhelm- ing sucees .
