Then from out the joy of living Comes happy hearts and voices free, For the love of Huron High School We are ever praising thee. Thru the long months of winter, With its darkness and its snow, Then the struggle seems unending And the hours go very slow. But we turn to you for guidance, Toward the goal we cannotsee, For the love of Huron High School' XVI: are ever praising thee. ' ,e 53$??? HURON HI... hm . from the hardships of camp life and the strict supervision of the offi- eers The time went altogether too quickly and we were soon back again at the barracks. But we were no longer the newest regiment, we now could lord it ever the incoming recruits and have revenge for the out rages practiced on us the year before. However, 1111 edict of General Bowden thwarted our plans, and the green recruits received a cool reception. Time-honored customs were put aside and the newcomers were not dominated as in former years. But the order of General Bowden Was respected and hostilities were practically suspended We elected Markey for Colonel again, Gardner fer Lieutenant, and Private Suuer for keeper of records. We had FL very profitable year with these officers to handle the affairs of 0111' regiment, and set out'to show the other regiments how to have a good time Several of our men distinguished themselves in the heavy 01- light artillery. I11 one 111emurahleoccasion the light artillery of 0111' regiment won the championship of the rest of the regiments of the barracks. Almost before we could believe it the year was over, the 16th regiment was discharged and we were promoted to the third 11111111 During this year our regiment won fame and honor for the Orange 11,1111 the Black. The officers for the year were Colonel Mhl'key, Lieutenant Gardner and Private Snuer. General Bowden at this time decided that there slmuhl be a change in the 111a11z11re111e11t of the 131111111 211111 thot it ought to be turned over to the soldier This was finally done, after much discussion, and two officials were elected from each reghneut. The plan succeeded well because of the honor of the $01- 1liel's. By way of shuwing that We were at 12151 nf some importance, we gave 21 banquet to our esteemed superiors. Thanks to the enthusiasm and pep of the 18th reginwnt, we suc- ceeded in starting 21 111011tl11y publication, recording the events at the barracks. Anmng those who won renown and glory for us in the 111'ti1- lery squall were Pl'iVates Joseph, Groves, Light 111111 Reilly. 111 the Hunl contest of the light artillery it was mostly due to the soldiers of 0111' 1'egime11t that the Orange and the Black won 1111 undisputed cheunpionship over the other eneampnwnts of the state. The 1919 Class Play, HThe Fortune Hunter,H was presented in March at the Grand Theater. This comedy in four acts, by iViuehell Smith, was a New York success a. few years ago, and is used Widely by prufessimml companies on tour. It proved zm excellent piece for displaying the various talents in the Juuinr class. The story followed the career of one Nathaniel Duncan, 2L somewhat speedy youth, who found himself five years out of College, without money 01' a job. He was advised to remove to some small town on the theory that in every such small town there was one wealthy girl, Who would look upon him with favor. Duncan's experience proved the theory. The vil- lage hankerk daughter fell in love with him and actually proposed to him. In his residence in the village, however, Nat became a suc- cessful business man. At the same time, he found the girl who could make him happy, and she did not happen to be a girl with a. fortune. The Fortune Hunter, himself, was ably portrayed by Keith Med- bery, and two other principal m9n characters were, portrayed by Niel Ruvel and Claire Box. Mona Isscnhuth took the part of the vil- lage bunkerk daughter, and Mary Pickcll and Ruth York the parts of Betty Graham and Angie, The other characters ranged from miL linnairos to village loafers and were taken by Noel Thompson, Shel- PAGE THIRTY-NINE 'c; H 11011 Reese, Victor Andnrsnn, 1Vult1-1' Amlm'snn, Wyeth mehlos, Enos Alluy, G1-1'21l1l Bandy, 11111115 1'11111'1', Kvnm-th Wm'd, Elwin Hickvr, Olivvr Wm'nm', 11111111 Nuwiun, z1111l Lnuix HlumlgmuL T111! play wns 11111lv1' Hu- 1li1'valinn 11f Mix: 1'1121 H111ill1 111111 11:13 111111101111le 11 1I13ci1lml succusa 11y 1'1'111'1'111111 wlm MHY il. 11,1-111111 Ar'lwl'nuuL nmm-y OFFICERS 0F ,20 CLASS President, .................. Markey, Richer, Cantunwinc, Reilly, E. Light, Knickrehm. Third row, P. Christensen, anel, 0. Light, Newton; Bottom row Bonesteel, Houghtnn, Gillespie, C. Christensen. Altho the nppmlents somewhat mouopolized the score on the football gridiron in the season 0f 1917, they all had to admit that the Huron team was as strong as they had run up against. Our line was invincible, and there was not a single team in the state that could tear a hole in it, and do so mnre than once. Brookings put up the hardest fight against our Iine. but even the strongest could not got tln'u. 0111' line 011 defense did wonderful work intercepting passes and stopping end runs. Our backfield was also very strong, and when fullback Light sent the ball forward to the ends or quarter, it very seldom missed its mark. Forward pass ing was one of the strong points of the team of y17. In the Madison game, our backfield charged through the holes in the line several times. making twelve and fifteen yards to a down, and it seldom happened that it did not make three 01' four yards. Pierre, Watertown and Sioux Falls wore the other teams we played against. It certainly seemed as if we Wnre playing against hard luck, for it seemed as if the slightest mi. nko allowed to score. The ronsnu, however, was that the Huron squn'l wore ugreen, but thru Coach Miller's until'ing efforts one of the most promising: of teams was produced. Althu nm- of the most etHc'u-nt teams was trained, we were playing against old experienced teams, who had most of their old players buckemeu whn had played together two 01' three years. If the effect of the war had not hpon 3'1 keenly felt in Huron High School without Ilnubt wo wnuld llilVO put 1111 :L very strong fight fur the state champinnship. THE TEAM Ruvel. Jan, 25 the shtem team got the larger end or a 13 to 8 score. The H'urnn team Seemed to lack their usual pep, and the game. as a whole. was a very mo, exhibi- tion at basketball. There was only one team that could make 21. bigger score, and that Was Miller. But what could you expect when playing against a 250. pound oppcnent? At any rate we showed them a good fight in both games. The first game was 011 Dec. 14, preceding the boyst game with Miller. The Huron girls played a. fine game. Most of the scores Were made on free throws. Alecn MeIIvuine made the three points which we got. The final score was 8 t0 3, in Millel'is favor. The line-np was: Jumping center, Mae Coop; running center, Flora Bos- Worth; guards, Julia Anderson and Alfrn Clarke; forwards, Aleen McIlvaine and Rose Light. Subs: Bessie Heiss and Gladys Bandy. Jan. 25 the girls defeated the Salem girls, here, by a score of 4 to 0. The game was real lively and altho the, score was not large, the Huron girls played by far the best game. They showed a great deal of improvement over thn- last game. Feb. 22 the girls met and defeated the Ilm'on College team by a score of 10 t0 5. The College team was heavier, but the High School made up in speed and bnsket-shooting what they lacked in weight. The girls' basketball season was ended with a class tournament, which was won by the Sophmnores, after a hard battle with the Juniors. t PAGE EIGHTY-SEVEN g TROUF G.
