Further, the novices competed both at the Regional and State Finals (finishing fourth in the State) and the varsity team qualified out of Districts to the State Tournament. In addition to competing in tournaments the Fluron team hosted more than thirty other schools (comprising more than one hundred teams) at its own invitational on October 20, 1973. Flowever, Saturday invitationals were not the only competition for the debaters and the other for Novices. The Novice team finished in second place in its league; and a Fluron debater was one of the top debaters in the JV-Varsity league in which Fluron finished in third at both levels of competition. The season saw Fluron win fifteen invitational trophies for in¬ dividual or team performance as well as two plaques for excellence in State competition. In looking forward to next season, the debaters are optimistic as there will be eleven returning debaters. The six seniors who will graduate this year contributed much to the program and will be missed next year. The seniors on this year’s squad were: Walter Kincaid, Kathy Hall, Debby Mueller, Kit Tilly, Pennie Rostow and Dean Matcheck. t I 88 i 89 Theatre Guild Performs Two Successful Productions i I The stage of Huron High was graced this year with two productions performed by it’s Theatre Guild Players. In the fall the audiences laughed at the antics of “See How They Run” and in the spring they were saddened by the emotion of “Flowers for Algernon.” Both plays were under the direction of Ms. Judith Burnor, Theatre Guild’s teacher sponsor. The cast was chosen from among Huron’s many talented people who flocked into tryouts. You do not have to be a previous member of Theatre Guild to try out any obnoxious ham will do. But seriously folks-Theatre Guild is always looking for undiscovered and unnoticed talent. If you feel you fall into that category (and survived the fall) come and tryout next year. Theatre Guild will undoubtedly maintain their fine reputation by bringing enlightened culture to the dim halls of Huron. Every year as spring rolls around a group of students get together with Mrs. Kregar to display their talents in interpretive reading, oratory, radio, and extemporous speaking. The team prepares for several months after school and at Saturday invitational tournaments for the state-wide competition in late spring. This year the team had an enthusiastic turnout and carried away many trophies from Saturday tournaments. In the midst of the state-wide competition, a good showing is being made by Huron’s Forensics team. Ranging from sophmores to seniors, the membership not only did well in competition but enjoyed themselves in doing so. It was a great year for the team! 94 Full Circle Produces Quality The Full Circle is an annual publication consist¬ ing of prose, poetry, arts and photography. The major areas of concern were found on the editorial page where students commented on over¬ crowding, graduation requirements, and student government. The highlights for the staff was a trip to New York City with the National Scholastic Press Association where they attended a lecture given by Walter Cronkite. And the jazz band and chamber orchestra also con¬ tributed their musical talent. Meyers Has Dedication Meet Mr. Meyers. I am sure many of you are saying who is he? He is our principal. If you are not aware of this, no matter what grade, put the blame on yourself, not him. All students have had their chance to meet and talk with Mr. Meyers at an intro¬ ductory assembly at the beginning of the year. It is just that many did not take advantage of it. Mr. Meyers arrives at school at 7 in the morning and does not leave until about 5 in the evening. He is often here on Saturday and Sunday. His day is filled with interviews with class principals, counselors, teachers, students, and parents. He commented that it was not unusual to make several trips to the administrations building in a normal day. Mr. Meyers says he is definitely aware of the lack of communica¬ tion with students and it does bother him. Yet he expressed the fact that it is a problem that al¬ ways becomes apparent in a large, over-crowded school such as Huron, but he is always trying his best and hopes that next year the school’s population will be down by a few hundred. Yet he enjoys his job as princi¬ pal, watching Huron progress since the opening of the school in 1969. Prior to this he has had work with teaching chemistry and being class and assistant principal in other areas of Ann Arbor. Asked if he has interest in a particular subject or hobby his reply was “just school”. Now that is dedication!!! FATCH In the Ann Arbor School System for 7 years, 5 at Huron, ex-speech teacher and trainer, Mr. Robert Fatchett, is now the ninth grade Class Principal. He is now responsible for 600 freshman. Currently completing his Masters Degree in Adminis¬ tration, Fateh certainly is well qualified for the job. Our Exalted Leaders... 181 Got A Problem? IMS. The library has a new policy this year to discourage such problems as people talking, books being switched around, and books being taken without being checked out. Students are now required to present their green and white Huron I.D. cards before entering the library. This can be a hassle but it has cut down on noise, making the library a quiet place to study—when you can get in. From Shakespeare. . . ‘I like the freedom of indepen¬ dent teaching, but there is a lack of communication between teachers and students.’ Tatiana Gedrovics ‘It’s easier to deal with kids when you realize that they’re try¬ ing to “deal” with you too. Four students from Huron High received honorable mention certifi¬ cates, Joyce Chu, David Laurance, Gary Kikuchi, and Richard Neidhart all proved worthy of this highly esteemed prize. 188 I Exploring The Past To Prepare For The Future... The car, with 3,000 miles on it, was used as a test car and by law cannot be driv¬ en on public roads after completing the tests. So it was towed in and is now being used to teach air-condition¬ ing and emmission con¬ trols. A gift from Rampy Chevrolet The future for Huron’s Auto Shop looks promising. An addition to the Auto Shop is being con¬ sidered, after a report by the University of Michigan Bureau of School Services which showed that the automotive facility should be enlarged 3 times to meet require¬ ments for a good vocational pro¬ gram. Reasons for the addition were larger enrollment, students turned away, overcrowding, and poor working conditions. With a growing demand for automotive personnel, the addition will be of great value to the auto¬ motive program. 198 VOCATIONAL ED. PROGRAM ‘We’re not as equipped as we need to meet the educational needs of students in the metals area, but we are making improvements.’ Roger Dick i sr f r m - Expanding new courses are growing popular among students in the Vocational Education Depart¬ ment. Automotive, Graphics, Electronics, Metal and Architectur¬ al drafting classes have been in¬ creased from one hour to two hour periods a day. Popularity increases because it seems fewer students plan on going to college and intend to begin working after graduation from high school. Not all students are from Huron. This is “Shared time county wide program,” explains Vocational Education Chairman Roy Underwood, “students from Milan, Whitmore Lake, Dexter, Saline and Pioneer also are en¬ rolled.” The purpose of these classes is to “Give students more opportuni¬ ty to gain greater indepth occupa¬ tional skills used on the job,” stated Mr. Underwood. She took a racket in her hand, and went to defeat the loud mouthed ham. Backhand to the left, forearm to the right, she gave Riggs an awful fight. Finally Riggs began to tire, when it was over King knew he was a liar. “A woman’s place is in the home, ” he said, but Billie showed him, she cut him dead. Courses range from Symphony Orchestra to Music Appreciation, with over four hundred students participating. The performing groups, directed by Mr. Edward Downing, Mr. G. Villasurda, and Miss Ruth Datz, give several concerts throughout the year along with attending both District and State Festivals where they are judged on their performing levels. Huron groups have always done extremely well at festivals and this year was no exception; both Concert and Symphony Bands and Symphony Orchestra recieved all superior ratings. Cantondo and A Capella Choirs also recieved good ratings. Being a part of a music group at Huron involves much time and hard work. To maintain their level of excellence each group rehearses daily along with occasional evening and after school rehearsals. But all the practicing has paid off, and Huron can be proud to have one of the finest music programs in this state.
