History of Class 1951 ln the fall of 1947 twenty green Freshmen arrived to become the largest class in the history of the Huron School They were James Berry Ruth Berry Hazel Brown Norma Charbonneaux Marjorie Distelhorst David Elsenmann Wilham Fichthorn Arnold Gerst Naomi Gerst Margaret Howe James Schrader Harry Schrader Donald Schulz Thelma Schulz Velma Schulz Ruth Stonoff Ted Thompson Kenneth Wehage David Wyss and hermit Witt During the month of March Norma Charbonneaux moved to Oakville and Lavonna Johnson from Denmark entered our Holy Gates The boys helped to win the sectional baseball tournament and the county basket ball tournament B111 Fichthorn was president and Mrs Muriel Neston was our sponsor During this year as our science and English teacher Supterintendent Franz Charbonneaux became one of our favorite and most popular teachers We re sure to remember the picnics tests and all the other ideas of his to keep class from being boring At the beginning of our Sophomore year Eugene Luttenegger Joined us and Sue Wykert came in March bringing our class to the total of twenty two members Another honor was given to the school when the boys again won the sectional baseball tournament Under the direction of our sponsor and English teacher Mrs Pauline Payton we wrote and enacted four short one act plays Ruth Stonoff won the county essay contest on Why I Like The State of Iowa Peg Howe represented the school in the dramatlc Our Junior year was one of the most memorable of all our years in school We ceived our rings gave our class play Grandad Steps Out which was directed by Mrs Esther Kline our sponsor entertained the Seniors at the Junior Senior Banquet usmg April Showers as our theme and we had the pleasure of picking apples in the Kline orchard 1n order to make money for the activity fund Naomi and Arnold won the local and preliminary dramatic and radio division in the declamatory contest But for the fact that we had so many highlights fate still looked upon us Ne lost three members during the year Sue Wykert Peg Howe and Ted Thompson and gained only one Phyllis Schnedler Our president was Velma Schulz Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of his country and as we have our last year to look back upon we realzze how true this has been The biggest project of the Senior class was the publishing of the 1951 annual As the annual goes to the printer we still have our play trip baccalaureate and commencement to look forward to Under the leadershlp of Superintendent Walden T Smlth our sponsor and Kermit Wirt as our president all has gone swell during our last year We only hope that things will keep on going that way so we can remember our Semor year as one of the best years of our lives I ' . , A . 1 , . . , , . . . , I D I 1 y 5 9 I I I X Y i I I , . . . , . l I U . . , . . , .
