School Spirit Ignited During “Autumn Affair” College day, tye-dye day, and jersey day kicked off the festivities of Homecoming Week. The annual Key Club bonfire Wednesday night was threatened by the brawl after the pep rally the preceding week. While some students enjoyed the toilet-topped inferno, Delta-Key members armed themselves with shoe polish and went to war in the battlefield of the parking lot. Students clad in boxers, hats, and shades on Thursday, and in red and blue on Friday showed their spirit at the pep rally. Pam Jennings was crowned Homecoming Queen at the football game against Lee Friday night. Key Club’s tasteful float (filled with innuendo?) and the sophomore class’ “Jail the Generals” float tied to lick the other entries. The final score of the game gave everyone something to celebrate at the dance Saturday night. Radar provided the music for the Autumn Affair,” while the students provided the memories. Spirit was displayed in various Council-sponsored events: inncrcourt jams, the traditional spirit caravan, and Homecoming Festivities culminating in the annual dance. A unique fundraiser that appealed to everyone was the selling of Panther boxer shorts. In all, the 1987-88 Student Council officers made the year one to remember at HHS. Our next major project was the annual slide show to kick off yearbook sales. Creativity and talent were combined to make the slide show a complete success. Next came the deadlines — lots and lots of deadlines. Late nights of sitting around a computer and wreaking havoc in Mrs. Jones' room, we met all of our deadlines just in time to complete this publication. The staff of the 1988 Pierian sincerely hopes you have found this edition to accurately represent your year at Huntsville High School. This updated method offers a much wider variety of opportunities in graphics, layout design and creativity. For a third consecutive year. The Red and Blue has earned Columbia Scholastic Press Association's highest evaluation, that of being a Merit newspaper in national competitions. Ranking this year in the top one percent nationally, the editors traveled to New York in March to receive the award during Columbia’s convention. The paper also earned Quill and Scroll’s first place designation for the second year from the International High School Journalism Honor Society, as well as continuing to offer leadership in state publication work. 26 FEATURES STAFF-Shclly Gilliam. After winning the Area 15 Championship, the team proceeded into the state playoffs; however, during the second game against Birmingham’s Shades Valley, Huntsville lost by one point in overtime. The Panthers won ten games during this season and tied the 1969 record. A number of the best players were chosen by city coaches as members of the all-city team. Pat Wynn made the first string all-state team as well as the offensive MVP of the city. Jamie Shafer and Pat Wynn accepted awards as team captains of the year at the annual football banquet. The following message was given to the team in honor of its excellent season: “At last year’s banquet, our coaching staff challenged you to exceed the accomplishments of the 1986 team. You more than met this challenge. Joe Anglin received his MS from Troy State, then taught Physics and Biology before becoming Principal of Huntsville High School. He has been here since 1969, and has also served as basketball coach and assistant principal. During his leisure time, Mr. Anglin enjoys many outdoor activities such as fishing, traveling, boating, and training his dogs, as well as woodworking and reading a variety of material. After receiving his BS from Pikeville College and his MA from Middle Tennessee State. Homer Adams taught American History and coached football and basketball both in Tennessee and at Randolph. He then came to Huntsville High where he has been a member of the administration for sixteen years. For the past six years Mr. Adams has been working on a lake house during his leisure time. He also enjoys flying, and once owned his own airplane. This is Mrs. Betty Carlton's twentieth year at Huntsville High School, teaching social studies for four years and being an administrator for sixteen. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama and her master’s degree from Alabama A M. She expects to complete her doctoral dissertation by the end of the summer. In her leisure time she enjoys reading, gardening, going to the movies and the theater, and travelling. During spring break she toured London and Paris. Being a dedicated grandmother she “ keeps 1-65 hot by visiting her four children, who all graduated from Huntsville High, and her six grandchildren. Receiving his master’s degree from the University of South Alabama and his bachelor’s degree from William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Mr. William Smith went on to teach and to coach football, basketball, and baseball for ten years in Mobile. Because he was required to teach six classes a day in Mobile, when he moved to Huntsville he was surprised and delighted to find out that he had a planning period and no homeroom! In his seventeen years at Huntsville High, he has taught biology and also coached basketball. These days, when he’s not busy being assistant principal, he likes to go camping and to travel. Joe Anglin Principal Betty Carlton Assistant Principal William T. Smith Assistant Principal Our Administration Homer Adams Assistant Principal In order for the students to get to know their teachers better also, the Pierian staff passed out a questionnaire to all the teachers including the following questions: “What is your favorite quote? , “What do you like most about teaching? , “What is the most humorous experience of your teaching career?”. The results were so fantastic we had a hard time deciding which response to print. We hope that you enjoy this insight into the personalities of some of your favorite teachers.
