Mary Shea reigns over court. Student Council Officers 20 TREASURER Melissa Baucom PARLIAMENTARIAN Stewart Shields CHAPLAIN Rachel Limmer Enjoy Successful Year PRESIDENT David Butler VICE PRESIDENT SECRETARY Mary Ellen Tomlin Julie Van Valkenburgh Student Council president David Butler commented, “The main objective of the Council this year was to bring back to Huntsville High that feeling of school pride. We officers tried to create the kind of projects and activities that would let people realize how much this school really has to offer. So many times this year I could feel this fantastic sense of school spirit among the student body. As soon as that attitude was established, everything just blossomed.” Butler continued, “So much of this year’s success can be attributed to the work of the other officers on the Council. Although they never received all the credit they deserved, they worked long and hard because they believed in the Council and they believed in the school. I think it was this devotion that translated over to the student body and made ’86-’87 such a great year at HHS.” SERGEANT-AT-ARMS Doug Campbell Homeroom Representatives Help Jennifer Anderson Jennifer Averbuch Doug Bachuss Mary Jean Baker Shari Barnes Sam Barnell Bob Battle Allison Berman Toby Bimey Monique Brenno Tina Briseno Kimberly Buck Richard Bryant Mary Shea Buchanan Cindy Burnside Bonnie Campbell Libba Christian Holly Comer Kate Cook Nikki Cosby Laura Daniels Pam Dickerson Brad Engel Shantel Ervin Ley Fletcher Merritt Fletcher Jennifer Gandy Christy Gann Peyton Gill Mary Gover Kristi Gray Jay Hendricks Amanda Hiley Holland Hopson Leigh Howell Avery Jcrnigan Richard Jernigan Evelyn Jones Michelle Kosovac Sharon Kosovac Debbie Lam pert Taffy Lamon Cooper Linton Kristi Lorson Chris Lutwak Brian McGuire Shane McLemorc Jason Melhiser Billie Ruth Miller 22 Students “Be a part of it!” Lynda Montgomery Eric Morring Hazel Mouzon Becky Newby Evin Olsen Kristen Owen Melissa Page Bridgittc Palmorc Jennifer Pera Kelly Poslajko Beth Pugh Stacy Radford Rodney Reynolds Kenneth Rice Tyrone Rice Debbie Roberts Jana Sadler Betty Sanderford Brad Schild Katie Shastccn Gregg Smith Julie Smith Katie Smith Scott Smith Erec Stebbins Tara Sullivan Michelle Swenson Amanda Taylor Erica Temple Lena Thomas Gray Vallely Lee Vice Victoria Walton Cherie Wayne Christy Webb Sunshine Webb Laura Welch Tyson White Dawn Williamson Alice Wooten 23 Honor Society Fosters Academic Excellence Nancy Applegate Jennifer Averbuch Doug Bachuss President Shannon Battle Treasurer Scott Bounds Becky Brindley Tina Briseno Mary Shea Buchanan Vice-President Cindy Burnside David Butler Dan Calhoun Stacy Carden Ken Case Steven Causey Dana Cooper Derrick Cope Jarrett Cudd Sam Day Carolyn Donoghue 24 Marisa Dyer Brittian Ellis Edward Fay Ten Gimenez Kim Gillespie Susan Gosdin Chris Hammons Laura Hayes Ann Herden Amanda Hiley Lydia Hopson Kerry Keel Anne Lewis Ellen Lewis Rachel Limmcr Jay Littles Shannon Mastin Gina Martin David Mattox Theresa Maxwell Michael Miller Lynda Montgomery Ellen Moore Hazel Mouzon Becky Newby Beth Patterson Stacy Radford Shilpa Reddy Secretary Taryn Reeder Charles Roach Jana Sadler Betty Sanderford Stephanie Skinner Scott Smith Shannon Smith Scott Strickland Brian Tcnbrunsel Hal Tuck Leigh Tyler Angel Watson Tristenne Wessel Jana Williams 25 Outstanding Math Students are Honored Nancy Applgate Doug Bach uss Caroline Banks Bob Battle Becky Brindley Tina Briseno Allyson Brown Gavin Brunsvold Richard Bryant Mary Buchanan Lauren Burlison Clint Byers Dan Calhoun Kim Cartron Steven Causey Jack Conover Richard Coon 26 with Membership in Mu Alpha Theta Amy Craig Jarrett Cudd Sam Day Carolyn Donoghue Karen Doolittle Greg Dunn Brittain Ellis Ed Fay Peyton Gill Kim Gillespie Robert Heeschen Amanda Hiley Robert Holt Lydia Hopson Carl Ise Andrew Kronenburg Nicole Liddon Rachel Limmer Gina Martin Shannon Mastin Theresa Maxwell Carla McGuire Micheal Miller Lynda Montgomery Hazel Mouson President Mike Pastrick Mike Potter Stacy Radford Jana Sadler Katie Shastecn Scott Strickland Secretary Jean Paul Tardy Amanda Taylor Gray Vallely Julie Van Valkcnburg Lady Vowell 27 Delta Tri Sigma’s Service Hours Delta Tri Sigma is a service club made up of fifty-six junior and senior girls. Its aims are to interest students in the physical sciences and to foster a sense of fun and fellowship among the physics students. Meetings are held twice a month and consist of both interesting programs by guest speakers and a social time with refreshments. An attempt is made to sponser one field trip to a site of scientific interest each year, and we close our year with a fun party, hopefully at the lake. Membership in the club is 80.“ Dottie Dale, sponsor. OFFICERS-Derrick Cope, Treasurer; Blaine Watts, Vice-President; Brad Bowen, President; Lynda Montgomery, Secretary. Pierian 1987 is the Fiftieth Anniversary edition of the Huntsville High yearbook. Right now, the staff is in hysterics because it’s that time ... DEADLINE!!! From October until May when the books come in, Mrs. Jones’ room is a mass of semi-organized furor. Early in the year, the staff attended a special workshop put on by Taylor Publishing Company. In addition to the old method of layouts in quadruplicate with lots and lots of Liquid Paper, Pierian Staff has bought an IBM PC. We are using the computer to draw layouts and prepare copy. As a staff, we sincerely hope that you, as a reader, enjoy the special features of the Golden Anniversary book. As an editor, I will now leave with a disconcerting thought... Aagghhh ... We’re out of Liquid Paper!!! The Huntsville High School Band began this year with three weeks of summer band practice and a week of band camp. After learning the show, the band attended all of the football games as well as three marching contests. At these contests, the band received both superior and excellent ratings. In December, the band performed at the annual Christmas concert, along with the H.H.S. choir. We also marched in the annual WAAY Christmas Parade. Ending the marching season, the band began preparation for Alabama Music Education Association and for the concert season. This year district 1 band competition was again hosted by our band. For our performance, the band was recommended to attend state contest in Birmingham. In march, those members who were selected will be performing at Auburn University in the All State Band. In April, many of our band students participated in solo ensemble competition in which several superior ratings and medals awarded. In May, we will be attending the Music Educators National Conference Convention in Orlando, Florida. The band received the honors of being the only band from Alabama to attend; there are eleven states in the southern conference. We, the band members, would like to give special thanks to our director, Mr. David Spencer; to our Drum Majors, J.J. Kendall and Carla McGuire; to the parents, and to various others who have supported the band and made this a great year. DRUM MAJORS-J.J. Kendall. Today there are several faculty members who are not just HHS teachers, but former HHS students as well. For this special anniversary edition, Pierian has chosen to honor these alumni as proof of the sense of pride and tradition continuing throughout the years at Huntsville High. As part of this retrospective, Pierian spoke with these teachers about their high school days and the changes within the institution that has served as the basis of their education and profession. “1950 American Conservatism. The United States stood at the pinnacle of world power. Cold war, Soviet threat of world domination were held at bay by American might and dedication. We moved through the traumatic 1970s and forward to the better now.” — Robert McKee, Class of 1950. “There used to be three sides to the (high school) building. (The west wall had not been built; no lunchroom, no library, and no new gym existed as they do today). Under these conditions we found it safe on the weekend with no teachers at school to go parking in the inner court. Since the senior parking lot wasn’t built at the time, we’d park with our dates because no trees had been planted there. Snow White hamburger was the hangout, located where Burger King is now. After the boys took their dates home they would hang out in the parking lot of what is now Big Brothers grocery. I bet 150 guys would go out to the parking lot, sometimes until 11:30 just sitting around on cars. Some would drink and be ugly so a policeman started coming out there ... The double standard was a lot worse then. Girls had curfews at 11:00 pm on Friday nights and 12:00 on Saturday night.” — Woody Stuart, Class of 1960 78 as Students at Huntsville High “We went from ballgame to ‘sockhop’ to cruising through Jerry’s without giving anything else much of a thought. School activities were the center of the social life for high school students — This is not true today.” — Betty Dinwiddie, Class of 1963. (Concerning the Cuban Missile Crisis, October, 1962): “Many students sat in their cars with the radio on to catch the latest information as the crisis reached its climax ... HHS students were more “cliquish” in the 1960s. High school students were not politically, socially, or otherwise aware of what was really happening around them.” — Bernard Swanson Class of 1963 “When I was at Huntsville High, it was very difficult for foreigners. (Within the student body) there seemed to be one-third who were hostile, (to foreigners especially Germans), one-third who were comDletelv indifferent, and one-third who were helpful and friendly. 1 remember the teachers as being quite helpful — Mrs. Lawson, an English teacher, stood out as having a positive influence on me.” — Georg von Tiesenhausen, attended 1960-61. I am vci7 glad that I went to high school in the late sixties. With national issues such as the Vietnam War, the peace movement, and the civil rights movement, I was forced to think about my values and the type of contributions I could make to society. For many of us going to school during that period, our future meant what we would do with our lives to help others, not what we would do with our lives to become rich. — Linda Brown, Class of 1969. It’s been a long time since the Beatles, Martin Luther King, Hubert Humphrey, miniskirts and all the other things that made the late sixties a crucial time in our history. When I look around the halls of HHS today and see the young people. I'm more amazed at how much the same so many things have remained rather than how different they may appear. It's still a great place to be. — Jimmy Robinson, Class of 1970 At graduation time most of us were worried about the draft. It was definitely a motivation to go to college ... Probably the biggest difference between seniors then and now is that we were in to causes a lot more. The students arc a lot more materialistic these days. — David Spencer, Class of 1970 “Adventure and miscellaneous fun have filled my high school years including those ever-pleasant lunchroom attendants who are so cheery in their new pinafores! One will always remember the diligent staff at Huntsville High! Evin and I rearranged chaos!” — Michelle Montgomery, Class of 1988 “My experiences at HHS have been great and I’m looking forward to more. I can dedicate most of my memories to Lee and Lynn Upchurch, Vicky Smithson and Sally Downing as seniors on the HHS Volleyball team.” — Tracey Doolittle, Class of 1989 “The bonfire ... A tradition that continues to burn like the flame always in our hearts for HHS.” — Shannon Sanders, Class of 1987 “The spirit this year has been fantastic! During football season we had everyone from local radio stations to McDonald’s behind us. The cheerleaders, band, dance team, flag corps and even the freshmen did a great job of cheering the guys on the team to victory.” — Kristy Lorson, Class of 1988 “One of the things I noticed most at Huntsville High was the way the student body cheered at the ballgames. I believed there were actually two teams — one on the field, the other in the stands.” — Amy Heidish, Class of 1990 “It was a year of progress and regress. Drama classes and the success of “The Good Doctor,” the excellent record of our football team and the beginning of new publications were a move forward for the school. However, the policy of student containment in which a tardy equals an absence, where a student can miss ten seconds of a class and not be able to walk in and learn for the remaining time, was a definite step backward in restricting the freedom of the students.” — Erec Stebbens, Class of 1988 80 And at Huntsville High GR1SS0F The Celebration Continues ... I he tradition of Huntsville High is one that is special for many reasons. Foremost is the fact that Huntsville spirit and in volvement are a result of the heritage and pride that the students at Huntsville High have developed over the years Pierian s fiftieth edition is a tribute to this special characteristic of Huntsville High Over the last fifty years many changes have taken place on national local and most importantly school levels Huntsville as a city has changed from the tradi tional southern farming community to an expanding center of technology Huntsville High has made equal advancements in school spirit, in structure, and in curriculum However Huntsville High has remained the same in some very important ways its emphasis on academics, its focus on student growth and improvement, and its reputation in the state. Reflecting on the past achievements and failures is an important way of learning about the future. Realizing the importance of devoting time to looking back we apply knowledge of the past to a new excitement about the future. This excitement is the new tradition at Huntsville High HHS's enthusiasm is a direct result of a student body that holds an exceptional attitude toward the school and its potential Spirit C aravans football games, fifth quarter parties, all-time high senior magazine sales fabulous publications and an increased interest in school clubs are products of the Huntsville High student body s commitment to school traditions Huntsville High School is a symbol not only of the past but also of the future Most certainly at Huntsville High the C elebiation continues Butler And Averbuch Named Most Outstanding “The amount of involvement Jennifer has had both here at school and in the community is truly remarkable. Whatever project she undertakes she does so with this incredible sense of devotion, with no other intention but success. Certainly Jennifer exemplified this quality in her role as Senior Class president during the magazine drive. Probably her greatest attribute, though, is that, despite all her accomplishments and honors, she has remained the same kind, caring human being. I just think Jennifer Averbuch is one of the best people I know.”-David Butler “David Butler is one of the greatest people you could ever get to know. He is so interested in helping others, as is evident through his vast contributions to Huntsville High. David is unique in that he has such a diversified range of talents. He has organized one sucessful activity after another. He is aware of the needs of the students at Huntsville High. This year, in his role as Student Council President, he truly has proven that he is most outstanding. — Jennifer Averbuch 84 Jennifer Averbuch Other Seniors Honored by Class MOST SCHOOL SPIRIT Laura Welch Doug Campbell BIGGEST FLIRT Kelly Poslajko Max Campbell BEST DRESSED Grant Brunsvold Suzanne Doming Mini BEST LOOKING Don Alan Hankins Becky Lampert 85 Brian McCool FRIENDLIEST Laura Lynch MOST COURTEOUS Stephanie Skinner Walton Vaughan MOST MASCULINE FEMININE Lee Knight Lydia Hopson 86 MOST DEPENDABLE Kim Gillespie Doug Bachuss MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Scott Smith Shilpa Reddy MOST INDIVIDUAL Joe Gehrdes Natalie Reinhold 87 MOST TALENTED Bobby Taylor Ten Gimcncz MOST ATHLETIC Blaine Waits Rachel Limmer MOST INTELLIGENT Lynda Montgomery Mike Miller 88 WITTIEST Jay Littles Amy Griggs BEST PERSONALITY MOST MISCHIEVOUS Mary Shea Buchanan Danny Whitsett Beth Higginbotham David Naumann 89 Juniors Honor Classmates MOST OUTSTANDING Carter Wells Julie Van Valkenburgh Pam Jennings BEST LOOKING Keith Neighbors Frankie Eaton BEST PERSONALITY Allison Berman 90 With Who’s Who Titles FRIENDLIEST Raymond Jones Holly Comer MOST INTELLIGENT John David Blankenship Kim Cartron John Resting WITTIEST Evin Olsen Class of’89 Honors Outstanding Class Members Sara Luther MOST OUTSTANDING Ben Lodmell Debbie Lampcrt FRIENDLIEST Homer McCall Celia Little WITTIEST MOST INTELLIGENT Randy Griggs Daniel Woo Erica Brindley 92 Freshmen Select the Superior Eight MOST OUTSTANDING Sarah Blue Seth Burton FRIENDLIEST Christy Webb Steve Johnson Topher Brown Robb Hereford WITTIEST Laura Griffith MOST INTELLIGENT Laura Daniel Twelve Seniors Elected Brian Tenbrunscl, Becky Newby, Charlie Roach, Lynn Upchurch, Dan Calhoun, Shannon Smith. 94 Favorite Students Selected by Their Classmates JUNIOR FAVORITES Sarah Fox, Amy Griffith, Courtney Warren, Clint Byers. The combined performances of the Huntsville High cross country teams during the 1986 season allow us to claim the BEST cross country program in the state of Alabama. At State we were the only school to win trophies in three divisions as the Varsity girls took second, the Freshman girls won the state championship and the Freshmen boys finished second. These finished, along with the Varsity boys fourth place among 18 teams, were by far the best performance of any single school in the state. In the Varsity girls division at State. Chrissy Jennings won her second straight individual crown and Stephanie Goeddcke and Jennifer Dodd made All-State. But it was a real team effort as each of the other seven girls contributed to the winning of the Runner-Up trophy over top ranked Mountain Brook by finishing ahead of the Spartans fifth runner. Similarly, the freshman girls took their first ever state title with a one point victory over Mountain Brook Junior High with each of the seven runner counting. Julie Steenburn became the first Huntsville girl to win the freshman individual title. Brian Tenbrunsel and Clint Byers led the varsity boys to a fourth place finish and each earned All-State honors. Ley Fletcher, Ken Case, and Ken Pugh rounded out the scoring for the defending State Champions. Finally, the freshman boys won their first trophy ever in state competition, taking second. Steven Hall. Bradley Schroer. John Lewis. Michael Stebbins, and Chris Parker were the scorers for Huntsville.
